Virtual teams are not likely to be just a passing fad. As technology improves and evolves, it is important for companies to be aware of this and allow such teams to form should it be appropriate for certain projects. If companies do not allow for flexibility in terms of how a project is completed, the end product may not be as effective as one that would include top performers that work from home, across the country, etc. Companies may also lose talent or not attract top talent should they not support some aspect(s) of virtual teams. As more companies expand nationally and globally due to cost savings for labor, locations, supplies, etc. virtual teams will become a necessity to keep the company moving forward. Collaborations across states and countries will necessitate virtual teams assisted by great leaders and software which can support these types of companies to help them complete their jobs, tasks, and projects in the most efficient ways possible.
A concern for companies and managers to be aware of is the lack of face-to-face interaction and in person relationship building within a team. If possible, there should be a balance between virtual and face to face meetings. They say that Millennials and Gen Z are forgetting or already have forgotten how to even hold a conversation let alone build a relationship with someone and how to find a connection with others due to the contact via technology only. It is and will be critical for managers to facilitate and focus on the trust, communication, and accountability within virtual teams which can come more naturally in in-person groups and teams. Managers and leaders of virtual groups must also have the ability to lead the group to be as productive and efficient as possible and as much as an in person team can be. Virtual teams represent one such organizational form, one that could revolutionize the workplace and provide organizations with unprecedented levels of flexibility and responsiveness. As the technological infrastructure necessary to support virtual teams is now readily available, further research on the range of issues surrounding virtual teams is required if we are to learn how to manage them effectively. While the findings of team research in the traditional environment may provide useful pointers, the idiosyncratic structural and contextual issues surrounding virtual teams call for specific research attention. This article provides a review of previously published work and reports on the findings from early virtual team research in an effort to take stock of the current state of the art. I have not had the opportunity to be on a virtual team while employed, however I have participated on various virtual teams while in undergraduate and graduate school in both group projects and online classes. The advantages and disadvantages for academic and workforce virtual teams are fairly similar; as the advantages of virtual teams include autonomy and independence, self-reliance, and increased productivity and the disadvantages of virtual teams include poor communication between group members and management/professors, poor leadership and management. Unfortunately, in academia virtual teams as well as workforce virtual teams occasionally are filled with incompetent team members who do not possess these personality traits.
