Twitter

...Twitter is fast becoming one of the internet’s most frequented websites and a highly used social networking medium. Users can, in 140 characters or less, share with followers precisely what is happening in their lives. With this advanced technology, twitter users can now break news world-wide, and literally have the world at their fingertips. Graduate journalist Emily Portelli, in her opinion piece, conducts a balanced discussion on the integrity and reliability of twitter as a news source. Her piece titles “Yes, you can break news even if you whisper tweet nothings” appears in the Herald Sun (8 Nov). Portelli cleverly recognizes, divides and then re-unites her audience on the controversial issue of the public breaking news and the actual validity of this information. Portelli cleverly engages the reader’s attention with her humorous title including the pun, “whisper tweet nothings”. This subtle but creative play on words captures the attention of the audience whilst also providing information as to what her piece is about; “Yes, you can break news…” Portelli further engages with her audience by using juxtaposition. By employing language such as “Technophobe baby boomers” and “technology embracing Gen Y”, Portelli targets every reader and challenges them to accept the “irrefutable truth” about twitter. By engaging the reader’s attention through her catchy headline and targeting each reader, Portelli challenges them to accept her point of view. Portelli positions the reader......

Twitter in Business

...Definition: “Twitter is utilized by 61% of Fortune 500 companies and is currently considered the number on social marketing platform.” Summary: In the article by Amardeep Virk, titled “Twitter: The Strength of Weak Ties,” the author give details on Twitter and it’s potential affect in business. Twitter is a form of social media that allows the user to post 140 character messages. Virk details the three ways Twitter differs from it’s competition in social media. First, users on Twitter have ‘followers’ not ‘friends.’ Secondly, he notes that on Twitter people follow other users on the basis of what they tweet and not based on knowing the individual. The last major difference noted is that users can retweet other’s tweets, similar to forwarding email. The author goes on to explain the effects of Twitter on marketing and finance. Whether in a style of ‘location-based marketing’ or ‘guerrilla marketing,’ Twitter has the potential to turn the marketing world upside down. Similarly, Twitter’s effect on finance has a big future ahead of it. Uses for Twitter, in the finance field, range from ‘micro payments’ to ‘high-frequency trading.’ Virk ends the fact based discussion simply mentioning that businesses and organizations need to understand Twitter and develop ways to implement it into their current strategies. By doing so, they will be able to grow their business in ways never once thought of. Discussion: You can ask anyone about social media and their opinions on such...

Twitter Case

...Summary: The fundamental problem that Twitter is currently facing is whether the current projection of future revenues and profits justify the current stock market valuation. The following analysis takes into consideration underlying factors in Twitter’s environment and provides recommendations for marketing-based solution. Company: Founded by Evan Williams in early 2006, Twitter was initially started as a status update project for Odeo Inc. Podcasting. Odeo was a podcasting form which aimed to successfully create a system that would make it possible to produce podcasts with as little as a mobile phone. However, as major competitors with bigger budgets, such as Apple Inc., entered the market, the board of directors for Odeo asked the company to strategize their business in a new light. The result was an internal project, Twttr Beta, which allowed staff to update each other through the service. In October 2006, newly re-named “Twitter” was acquired by Obvious Corp., a company set up by Williams, Jack Dorsey and Christopher Stone to allow the group to focus on the project. Today, with 140 characters or less, subscribers of Twitter can update their followers with a “tweet” in real time. Twitter, a micro blogging service, is built on open service and allows its’ over 200 million active users to broadcast over 500 million tweets per day. ...Twitter Twitter is becoming a huge source of online communication towards specific target audiences, which is making a lasting impact. In our readings they discussed how nonprofit and community health organization is using twitter as a health communication tool. With twitter rapidly growing using it as a communication tool is becoming very effective and inexpensive to spread the word quicker to large audiences. Nonprofit organizations make health literacy easier to understand for tweeters, and easy to communicate back. Nonprofit organizations are utilizing twitter because they need extra support to promote their organizations. Not like business organizations that already have the money and stuff to support their organization. One twitter account I choose to look into was Susan G. Komen for the cure (@SusanGKomen). The twitter account helped inform, educate, and aware a lot of people about breast cancer. The account did this by having a Q&A day on twitter where people would tweet their questions and the account would tweet back an answer. Another aspect I noticed about the account was that they used it to provide support to individuals who had breast cancer or a family member that is suffering with cancer. I think this is a wonderful tool because a lot of the time people don’t have enough support and have a difficult time finding other support groups. The twitter account gained a lot of people to advocate for the cause. The page also had a live twitter chat to build......
