Assignment 2.1 Jennifer Laird Paul Hackman English 115 February 15, 2015

My director has asked me to write you this letter on behalf of our organization Free Women. Our organization is dedicated to helping the women and their families who have been victims of domestic violence. We set out to provide a safe and warm place to not only come and lay your head but have a shoulder to cry on or a friend to listen to. First before I get into telling all the information on this wonderful organization and why I have decided to sit on the board of such organization I’m going to give you a quick definition on abuse. Abuse- treat a person with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly. You do not have to be hit to be abused you can be mentally abused to. Being told over and over again that your not good enough, your fat, your lazy is all considered abuse and you need to get far away from that abuse to. Just because you cant see the marks or scars don’t mean they are not there. Think about it are you being physically or mentally abused is so we are here. Being a victim of domestic violence myself I know how hard it is to let someone help you or for that matter even admit you need help. Trust me I know. I fully believed for almost two years that my ex loved me and we could get passed him hitting me all the time. I can remember the day that he put my head through the wall all over two dollars. He knocked me out. that’s the last thing I remember before waking up in the hospital. Can you imagine not knowing when, what or how you got somewhere? Did I let it stop know NO I told everyone that I fell and even after my family try talking to me and getting me to tell the truth…...

...The Public Needs to Know William J. Pruitte ENG 115 Professor Laura Weber 5/17/2013 Introduction The Public Needs to Know Life is the possible price a cancer patient may pay while a new cancer drugs are being produced. Why do cancer drugs cost so much for the patients that need the drug to cure or prolong their life? We have all this technology, but why does all the Corporations that handle the product have to put a high price on what saves a life? Who has the last word on if the drug meets the standard to cure the cancer and why does it take so long to find out if it works or not? “A number of innovative cancer treatments have recently entered clinical practice. Some treatments cost as much as $100,000 per year but it has become apparent that many of these expensive new drugs offer uncertain benefits. Some drugs add only a few weeks of survival at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars. If the cost of cancer care continues to rise, the oncologists are likely to be pressured by payers to consider the economic factor. The high impact of cancer care continues to rise and so does the price tag on many of the agents that have become available during the past few years. Because of the tremendous difference in treatment cost, it is crucial to consider the actual benefits associated with treatments that are more expensive.” (Nelson, 2008) Developing new drugs for treating cancer is a...

...The Public Needs to Know –Revised Monkhuu Rose English Composition 115 Professor, Dr, Atia Yasmeen Feb.10.2013 I have chosen my research topic that is about the business of developing new drugs for liver cancer patients. Because liver cancer is the third most common cancer in the world, and the majority of patients with liver cancer will die within one year as a result of the cancer. Furthermore, every year there were about 564,000 new cases of liver cancer worldwide, and a similar number of patients died as result of this disease and about 75% of the liver cancer are found in Southeast Asia. Liver cancer is also very common in Mozambique and South Africa (Melissa Conrad Stoppler,2011). But in North America and Western Europe is much lower, less than five per 100,000 population. In USA, there were about 21,600-30,600 new cases liver cancer of 315,6 million people (Melissa Conrad Stoppler,2011), in Mongolia, 1,600 new cases of liver cancer of 3.1 million people that is percent of per the population is more than USA. ...The Public Needs to Know Personalized medicine uses molecular analysis to obtain maximum medical benefits in the treatment and management of patient’s known diseases. It can also be used to predict the predisposition for inherited deceases such as cancer. Personalized medicine’s goal is to begin a whole new level and standard for healthcare. Personalized medicine is a rapidly growing field within the healthcare industry., and environmental disposition and or variables. Due to the fact that specifics are sometimes different from person to person, the type of the diseases, to include the start, the duration, and how the decease may respond to the forms of treatment available or other clinical solutions is totally individual to the person who has the disease. One key tenant of the Human Genome Project was stated as; to learn the sequences of the 3 billion units of DNA that makes up a human genome, the genes in the DNA including the individual elements that control the genes are currently being studied, identified and cataloged. The information obtained thus far has suggested that the human genome may contain in excess of 22,000 genes and may even possibly eclipse 23,000 genes. This information is crucial to how modern genetic technology could lead to personalized medicine. Be sure to include the citation as well. ...The Public Needs to Know By: Drea Johnson ENG115 February 24, 2013 The homeless population in America, as well as the metro Atlanta region is not what it used to be 20 years ago. The Giving to Live organization is working hard and often to see that the rate continues to decrease as well as offer up as much help as they can to take care of those who are still in need. The Giving to Live organization feeds about 50,000 homeless people per year. 40%-60% of those homeless people are employed but cannot afford meals. This organization not only provides food assistance to the homeless but also to others with varying circumstances on a daily basis. This is not an easy task. Several steps and precautions go into making sure this happens. Sometimes, circumstances that are beyond man's control causes changes to take place without notice and some may suffer still. But Giving to Live works diligently with many community workers and volunteers to see that meals are prepared and food is available for homeless families/children, low-income families with children, the elderly, transitional facilities, and orphanages. The number one benefit of Giving to Live is to decrease the number of hungry people in city of Atlanta and in the southern region of America. This factor, though not the only one, is what keeps our director, Ms. Miriam Wilson and her team working around the clock to take care of so many. As a member of this organization, I have been doing some research on......

...The Public Needs to Know The Public Needs to Know With obesity and type 2 diabetes being on the rise in school age children, it is time to change the eating habits of today’s children. This change starts in schools by offering healthier breakfast and lunch choices. With the help of school officials, nutrition experts, and parents/guardians, our children can start to have their nutritional needs met beginning each day at their school. Healthier eating habits are becoming more important as the economy falters, health crises arise, and school performance levels fall. We are making those changes today with changes to the breakfast and lunch programs offered in today’s schools. In a report written by the School Nutrition Association (SNA) it states that “according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the United States economy had been in a recession since December 2007” (SNA, 2008). With fewer jobs available and unemployment on the rise, more families are taking advantage of the nutrition programs offered by schools. With more children being approved for the free or reduced meal plans offered at schools, children get most of their daily meals at their school (SNA, 2008). We hear on the news all the time about children going hungry, families having difficult times making enough money for food and bills. It seems like it is cheaper today to eat fast food than a healthy meal at home. The costs of food in grocery stores are slowly rising while people are still trying......

...The Public Needs to Know – Draft Version Harikrishna osuru Strayer university Prof. Dennis Millan English 115 08-04-2014 In many states, the nutrition of our children has come under review. Our children are getting fatter, and the school lunches have become less healthy. Something needs to be done to correct this tragedy. Due to the heightening number of obese children, the school board has decided to change the breakfast and lunch menus to include healthier choices and exclude the options very high in sugar and fat. The main economic issue is that the high sugar and high fat items in the grocery store are being marketed toward children. Candy often has very colorful packages and pictures of popular cartoon characters to catch the attention of the children that see it. A contributing main issue is the fact that the parents either do not have time or just do not want to cook for their family. The result of this is a family that will always dine out and spend money eating unhealthy food. Fig.1 The cost of healthy meals will be more expensive than the normal meals would be. The school and the parents would have to meet in the middle with the cost. The cost would be split in the middle with the parents paying half the extra cost and the school paying the other half. When the children aren’t eating unhealthily, they are not exercising. Video games and television have replaced outdoor activities that require running and sweating. Water had been...

...The Public needs to Know - Draft Version Tonya Addison Dr. Ryan ENG115 11/02/2014 Opening a free clinic can be a very good way to give back to the community, but is also a challenging thing to do. There are many legal, supply, volunteer recruitment, fund-raising and management issues to be considered. First step would be to recruit a team consisting of doctors, office help, an accountant and legal attorney. Keep in mind your legal help should be familiar with medical laws and setting up nonprofit businesses. Be sure to get someone with plenty of experience in knowledge of how to fund programs, like Medicare or other local, state and federal programs. You should advertise in the newspaper, with local businesses and at local hospitals to bring volunteers. It would be good to hold meetings to discuss your future clinic needs and requirements of the staff. It would also be a great idea to consider recruiting volunteers for cleaning, reception and office work from local high schools or universities. Second decide on the main services that your clinic will offer which should be based on your local demographic. You can get information about the main needs of the local uninsured from the health department. For example, you can determine that there may be a large number of uninsured adults and children in your community or a large migrant population. In that case, you would want a bilingual staff or at least a people who can communicate with clients and patients that speak...

...The Public Needs To Know Christina D. Cromwell Professor Wayne Marshall English 115-English Composition January 31, 2015 People in the community, without typical means, should have a place to go for medical treatment just like everyone else. Unemployment and no insurance should not be what keeps people from getting the proper medical treatment. The new free clinic opening in our community will be available for adults and children who do not have traditional means of obtaining medical treatment. There will be several doctors on site with a wide range of specialties. Many have practices focusing on certain types of medical problems and some who can assist with any general issues. In some cases, patients may have to visit doctors off site. Because we are aware that some patients may not have the means to get to other areas, we will provide a shuttle service on preassigned days for this very reason. Doctors are volunteering their knowledge as well as their time to raise awareness and help those in the community in which some of them grew up in. We are aware that examination and knowledge is but a portion of what is needed. For this reason, we have partnered with some local pharmacies who will provide medication at a substantial discount and even free of charge in some cases. Patients will be informed of everything every step of the way and be given the same assistance as if they were paying customers. Each new patient will complete a short questionnaire......

...Throughout this paper, my intent is to describe to you in detail the benefits of these programs and the process that is involved in implementing them within the school district, as well as to talk about some of the challenges that may be faced with the adoption of such a program. The Process and Benefits The USDA describes the national breakfast and lunch programs as federally assisted meal programs which seek to provide low-cost or free lunches to public school children across the country every single day. For taking part in these programs, our school district would receive subsidies and also food provided to us for every meal by the US Department of Agriculture. These meals would need to meet certain health standards that are determined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which currently seeks to increase the intake of items such as fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains within these school meals. Along with the inclusion of more healthy ingredients, there are also specific caloric and sodium intake standards that we would need to adhere to as well. These limits are determined by the age of the children who are being served and would be different for each age group. Although this may seem to limit the freedom that we have within the district to choose what items we serve during meals, it does quite the opposite. Although Federal standards must be met, the school itself does indeed have the ability to choose what specific foods are chosen and how they are......

...The Public Needs to Know – Revised Version Holly A. Easton Strayer University, Florence Campus August 16, 2012 It is common knowledge that the recent economic downturn and high unemployment levels have put serious pressure on the ability of many families to provide adequate nutrition for themselves. There has been a definite uptick in the dependence on Food stamps and other government resources to help make ends meet. Unfortunately, that is not always enough. The fight against hunger is not just about being hungry. Lack of proper nutrition is a hindrance to our children. Our children growing up hungry can potentially affect their overall health, education, and adult economic stability. The direct economic impact of hunger and food insecurity in America resulted in Federal expenditures for food assistance programs totaling approximately $103.3 billion in fiscal year 2011. This was an 8 percent increase from the year before. This was also the eleventh consecutive year that food assistance expenses increased and the fifth where they exceeded previous historical record. (Oliveira, 2012) The following graph shows the drastic monetary increase in billions for the SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from 1970 to 2011. The indirect economic impact of hunger and food insecurity in America is shown in many different ways. One very important example is the rising costs of special education. Food insecurity has been shown to have a direct impact on a......
