Read it Before You Ban it

Parents are always worried about what their children are exposed to whether it’s music videos, movies, or reality shows. Some parents even go as far as to banning books for their controversial content. Books such as The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie has been banned from many high schools. The story is about Arnold Spirit Jr. who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation and endures many challenges while searching for hope. Although The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian remains banned from some high school for its “unsuitable content,” it should actually be added to the curriculum instead.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should not be banned for it’s positive messages. In the chapter “How To Fight Monsters,” Junior stands up to Roger who had been bullying him: “Did you know that Indians are living proof that n****** f*** buffalo?...that was the most racist thing I’d ever heard in my life...So I punched Roger in the face...I felt brave all of a sudden...I was telling the world I was no longer a human target.” (Alexie64-65). Teens should be able to read this book in school because it reveals an inspiring story of how a weak boy with health deficiencies overcomes a larger worldwide problem: Bullying. Maybe violence isn’t always the answer but what is there to make of the situation when another option of salvation isn’t given. Banning this book would deprive young readers from an encouraging and uprising novel.

Many people argue that The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should indeed be banned in high schools for its violent content. For example in the chapter “Because Russian Guys Are Not Always Geniuses,” Junior goes ballistic when he finds out of his sister’s sudden death: “to learn that your sister was TOO FREAKING DRUNK to feel any pain when she…...

Problems Encountered by Part-Time Students there could be many challenges that accompany this. Students, whether part-time or full-time, are affected by the issues they encounter. Some of these challenges can be solved by adopting the following guidelines listed below. One of the major challenges students are faced with, especially part-time students, is financial difficulties. Tuition costs for part-time students are far greater compared to the tuition cost of full-time students. For example, A three-year associate degree for a local student, full-time, costs six hundred and thirty dollars while a three-year associate degree for a local student, part-time, costs five thousand dollars. As a result of these high prices, some students were forced to withdraw from programs. In addition, students have to purchase books and or materials which varies between one to four hundred dollars. Furthermore, students spend an average of forty dollars, or more, a week in bus fare or gas to attend college in order to satisfy an eighty percent class attendance - to qualify to sit final examinations. To resolve this issue, students can get a part-time job and budget his or her money properly. Getting a job will enable students to have money to purchase books, pay tuition and pay bus fare and budgeting will safeguard students against overspending. Another hardship faced by many students is time management. Time management is prioritizing the amount of time spent on specific activities to increase productivity. Majority of the......

Part-Time Employee

...Shift: Sorry, Just Part-Time (Julie Jargon, Brenda Cronin, Sarah E. Needleman, Jul 14,2013) There are more jobs release this year than last year, especially in hospitality industry. Roughly, 50,000 job opportunities offered by restaurants and bars per month since this April, it's two times the rate compares with last year. Nearly 40% of the new employments were provided by the leisure and hospitality industry last month. The reasons behind the high recruiting rate may be new open restaurants, hiring after employee reduction during the recession, and new health-care law. The new health-care law will launched in 2015 and it requires companies to offer affordable insurance to their employees who works 30 hours or more per week, if their full-time equivalent employees is above 50. Therefore, some restaurants reduce start to replace their full-time workers to part-time workers. That's the reason that the need of part-time employees is increasing. When I first read this article, I thought the increasing in job release represent a better economic environment. However, the explanation in this article indicates that there's a possibility that the increase is because job market shift from full-time to part-time. The reason for this shifting is because of the new care law. Medical service in U.S. is very expensive, I think this law might be helpful to part-time workers but impacts some small business. Furthermore, if companies start to replace full-timer with part-timers, it will......

However, the students who have a part-time job have less time to keep interpersonal relationship, stay healthy, and study. To have a good interpersonal relationship in college is very important. Making good use of the time after school to join the associations, going out or discussing lessons with classmates after school all can improve the skills of social interactions. Nevertheless, the part-time job takes the students most of the time after school. So the students who have a part-time job after school might lose the chance to make friends, and build up desirable interpersonal relationships. To keep up the health is important but difficult to the students who have to work after school due to some reasons. First, the students who have to work after school might have to stay up to do their homework or reports; second, they might use their rest time to work; third, their immunity against disease might decrease. Therefore, it could be difficult for them to keep their health. Also they might sleep in classes or miss the classes because of insufficient rest and sleep as the result of long-time working after school. Benefits for Part-Time Workers

...that Alan should consider when determining whether or not to offer benefits to part-time workers? Alan should consider what JSH competitors offer to their part-time workers. As one of the fastest growing CPA firms the company is going to need to continue to employ top talent in their field, but not offering competitive benefits could hinder this. Additionally, he should consider the results of the two compensation survey reports, which showed 95% of CPA firms offer time-off to part-time employees, 75% offered healthcare, and 67% offered retirement benefits to part-time workers. Finally, Alan should consider the cost factor of offering benefits to part-time employees. As stated, healthcare insurance is a fixed cost and could raise total compensation for part-time employees to nearly 50%. 2. Do you think the firm should offer benefits to part-time workers? If yes, should they offer paid time-off, the 401(k) plan and health insurance? Or only one or two of the benefits. Explain your recommendation. I believe the firm should offer benefits to part-time employees, however there are options available when creating a benefit package for these employees. First, paid time-off should be incurred based on the hours worked. Additionally, I would recommend 401(k) contributions start after a certain amount of time on the job. Finally, I would recommend providing a fixed healthcare allowance to part-time employees every month. This would be cost effective for the employer and......

Rights for Part Time Employees

...Rights for Part Time Employees A definition of what is known as a part time employer according to Daniels and Macdonald (2005, pg 92) “someone who works fewer hours than of what a company standard is which full time employers work. Part time workers have the same statutory right of their full time employees.” Growth in part time workers within companies as been evident within the European Union. In Europe part-time workers are significantly increasing according to Brewster and Hegewisch (1994, pg 173). “One in seven people in Europe are working part time and this as enabled employment growth in the last decade” therefore individuals gain benefits as there are more jobs. The reasons why individuals may prefer to work part time then full time may be because they may have other commitments such as balancing their work and home life which is known as work- life balance. Work life balance is where an individual can balance their social life and home life with their work life, all activities can be worked side by side. According to sparrow and cooper (2003) In Beardwell and Clayton (2007) work life balance concerns organisations that enable employees’ autonomy; this suggests that employees can split their work life with their other commitments outside of the workplace. Part time employees cannot be treated less favourably because they work less hours then the company standard even if they are not a part of the company’s day to day duties as long as that employee is......

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

...In the Novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexei, the two characters I choose was Junior and Rowdy. Junior was a poor cartoonist drawer growing up in Spokane Indian reservation. Junior and Rowdy lived in a town name Rez. While, Rowdy was Junior’s strong best friend. Rowdy protected Junior when he got bullied. When Junior transferred to different school in Reardan, Rowdy started hating Junior for that so they became enemies from best friend. I think these two were the funniest guys in the novel because they did some crazy things together. This novel made me feel different emotions such as laugh, worried and sad. The novel made me laugh because Junior was a funny guy. Junior made funny cartoons, and also used funny quotes in the book such as, ‘I was born with water on the brain.” This quote was the first sentence of the novel. The novel also made me worried when Junior went all white people school. He didn’t know anyone there and especially there were no Indians there. I thought he was going to get beat up by white people but I don’t think that happened. I think he punched a white guy on the face. The novel also made me sad because Junior’s grandma, his dad’s best friend and his sister died in terrible accidents. This was the tragic part of the book and especially for Junior. The three events that I think are important to novel are when Junior has a basketball game versus Rowdy and his old school, he got pushed and was taken to the......

...purpose of this study was to examine the work while the impression towards academic achievements. Percentage shows between 55% to 80% of students will work while learning (Miller, 1997; King, 1998). This high percentage is also causing some researchers to believe that the students who will work towards the achievement of academic decline (Steinberg, Dornbusch, & Fegley 1993). At the same time also, there are a discovered that work while learning provides a positive impact if they follow the correct percentage (In & Hoyt, 1981). Inquiry about "impression of working part time on academic Achievement" is mixed. Along these lines, the study will endeavour to give more proof of a much clearer and point by point to comprehend the impression of working low maintenance towards scholastic accomplishments in North Malaysia College understudies particularly. 1.2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid on the Rez

...The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian concerns Arnold Spirit, Jr. He is a stammering hydrocephaloid living on an Eastern Washington Indian reservation where he endures a daily round of abuse and bullying. This abuse changes when he goes to Reardon High, the nearest “white” high school. His sister is agoraphobic, his parents are alcoholic, and his best friend’s father is abusive to Rowdy, born the same day into the same life. Personally I see this book as Diary of a Wimpy Kid on the Rez. The slick marketing and packaging of the book takes the heart out of it for me. I had already begun reading it when I realized that the cartoons and artwork were not Alexie’s; though he claims to be a cartoonist devoted to drawing. In this section, Junior misses Rowdy coming over to eat pumpkin pie, so he draws a picture of the two of them together and delivers it to Rowdy's house. The juxtaposition of an imaginary story with an even more imaginary image breaks the narration for me. The work, as a whole package, is being marketed to the “Young Adult” demographic. After it won a deserving National Book Award the cover, the package, and the hype changed. The 2nd release of the book ran out of copies. It has eclipsed its own status as a book, and become a sacred totem for the publishing industry, following other works that are marketed in the same YA/graphic novel way. Does popularity mean more than literary merit in the way something trends on the Internet? Don’t get...

This helped explain certain phenomenon occurring in the realm of education. Causality tells us what is possible, what can be changed and what is difficult, if not impossible to change (Losh, 2001).
