...The case finds HTC at an important junction in its growth within the mobile device industry. HTC is plagued with several challenges and faced with crucial decisions that could make or break the company’s future. Performance In the years leading up to the launch of its own brand, HTC developed strong relationships with mobile phone brands and network providers around the world. These relationships became the foundation of its success during the first few years of the smartphone era as it dominated the market under the leadership of HT Cho and Cher Wang. Right from the time the company entered the notebook computer industry, the leadership always demonstrated a great amount of adaptability and foresight – which, ironically, is what led the company to completely abandon the manufacturing of notebook computers. Upon realizing that the developments that were taking place at Microsoft aligned perfectly with its own vision of mobile computing, HTC leapt at the opportunity to become pioneers in this space. By using its first-mover advantage into the PDA space (and by extension the smartphone space), many branded handset companies and network providers went on to hire HTC to manufacture its devices. Lauded for its ability to customize products, the contract manufacturing business allowed HTC to establish itself as a leader in the eyes of handset companies and network providers. However, a key trade-off in this strategy was the lack of visibility the company was receiving in the......

SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT Matrix) is a structured planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.[1][2] The degree to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit. This would allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization. * Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others * Weaknesses: are characteristics that place the team at a disadvantage relative to others * Opportunities: elements that the project could exploit to its advantage * Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project Identification of SWOTs is important because they can inform later steps......

...SWOT Analysis Toni Dominguez BUS/210 August 10, 2014 Melanie Wright SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis is used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a business. Hill  (n.d.) " SWOT analysis is a process where the management team identifies the internal and external factors that will affect the company’s future performance" (para. 1). A SWOT analysis is typically used at the beginning stages of the business, after a business plan has been completed, to determine any potential risks or assets. However, an analysis can be completed anytime a change is made internally or externally that can impact the business and is recommended for review of your business every 6 months (Shouldis, 2012).. The Java Culture coffee has completed their business plan for a new coffee shop in a prime location near University of Oregon. They are looking to provide a comfortable and relaxing shop for customers to enjoy coffee with friends while providing excellent customer service. The owners have secured their financing, determined their budget for employees and the day to day needs of the business, lease, and forecasted sales based off the market for the first year. Now the owners will need to complete a SWOT analysis to determine any unseen risks or assets to their business that might be impacting to their success. ...Strength: 1. Customization: HTC has a long experience with the network suppliers. It did a good job to customize their mobile phones according to the requirement and needs of the network suppliers. ( put it in other way, they have no choice. Customization is the only way to win the sale from the network supplier.) 2. Touch Technology: HTC produced the first Touch Technology in the world, even more earlier than the Iphone. So they hold the core technology of Touch Technology, which is now the mainstream technology in the smartphone market. even Apply is a bit jealous and try to restrain this little brother, through the lawsuit. ( for reference, please look at the article: Apple lawsuit wrecks Taiwan group's quiet life http://www.ftchinese.com/story/001031576/en ) 3. Innovation: HTC is renowned for innovation. The current CEO is famous for engineering and innovation. ( the HTC R&D/Sales rate In 2009 is 6%, compared to 3.4% of Apple, 3.2% of Samsung, 11.7% of Nokia.) Weakness: 1. Brand: it is the HTC fatal flaw. HTC is really new brand, with which is not familiar by the customers, resulting from the long history of ODM and customization. 2. High cost: The manufacture cost of HTC is relatively higher, compared to its competitors. This weakness led HTC to the slim margin, which can make domino effects on the further development of HTC, such as less research cost, more rely on the subsidy of network suppliers, ) The cost of customization, lack of patent, lack of the......

...It's the reality of the smartphone business and a key dilemma for a company like HTC, which lacks the marketing firepower that larger rivals Apple and Samsung enjoy. This year will be a critical one for HTC, which needs to prove that it can still compete in the increasingly duopolistic market. History has already shown that a sexy, new product just enough anymore. "HTC is going up against two of the biggest spenders in the world with intensely loyal followings," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. So HTC needs to do a few things it hasn't been comfortable doing in the past. For one, it'll need to get more proactive with its own marketing. It's something the company has always half-heartedly done in the past, but it will need to work harder to develop both the One brand and the HTC name. Apple and Samsung are household names, and while HTC was seemingly on its way to becoming one just a few years ago, it lost its way. "I think they need to invest a tremendous amount in marketing," Greengart said. The company will also need to break from its traditional reliance on the carriers for support, and stop kowtowing to all of their needs. That's a particularly difficult one because that had been HTC's tentpole strategy for so long. But as Apple and Samsung have moved beyond carrier exclusives and customizing phones, HTC must do the same. HTC appears to be on the right track. The company plans to roughly double its global marketing budget from a year ago, as it......

...Advantages and disadvantages of using SWOT analysis to develop corporate strategy. Discuss using examples related to at least two companies. Introduction SWOT analysis SWOT analysis can also be called as SLOT analysis which is a strategic planning or direction for making decision based on available resources to determine valuate the Strength, Weaknesses/limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a small business (business venture). It mentions the objective of business or a collaborative  enterprise project and recognizes the internal, external factors which come in the achieving of objective. This method of analysis is prepared by an American businessman and a management consultant named Albert S Humphrey (Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s). An objective of a project or a business venture should be only started after the SWOT analysis has been carried out. It would be easy for the organization to achieve its targets/objective. With the help of SWOT analysis decision makers are able to ascertain after a calculation that whether the objective they are planning is capable of been done or not. If not they must choose the distinct objective and the process is done over again.
