ETH501: Business Ethics
Dr. Bonnie Adams
January 23, 2015

Deontological Ethics is defined as a person must act a certain way for no other reason than because it is the right way to act. In which a way, that a person should act a certain way because it is my duty to do so. Acting on morals, they are either right or wrong on principal and we have a duty to do well no matter the circumstance.
The philosopher Immanuel Kant laid the ground rules as to how a person should act called Categorical Imperative. Categorical Imperative is defined as acting only on that maxim through which you can at the same time, that it should become a universal law (Pecorino, P.A., 2000). What Kant is saying is that everybody should act the same way because it is the duty to do so. It should fit the criterial with the rest of the duties of that law.
In this paper I will discuss a business ethics problem in which I have had personal experience with and analyze it using deontological ethics. Secondly, I will describe the deontological implications of the ethical problem. Lastly, I will describe how Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative applies to the business ethical problem I have experienced. After working 14 out my 30 years of life, I have experienced more than a handful of unethical problems in the workforce. One that stands out to me the most is stealing from the workplace. Although I have not personally experience this, I have caught the act of stealing first hand. Working in electronics retail, stealing happens a lot and it does carry punishment forced by the company and the law. The person that stole from the company knew that they could get caught but decided to continue. I tried to talk my coworker out of it but instead he insisted that it was the right thing to do because the stock of electronics was endless…...

...Res500 Module 1 Case Research Methods for the Health Sciences – Module 1: Case The Research Question, Literature Review, and Research In any research plan devising the research question is a critical step in the research process. It helps in determining what, where, when and how data will be collected. A properly developed question can help focus ideas and ensure the collection of appropriate data. In this case study I will discuss how descriptive research questions differ from questions of relationship and questions of comparison. Then I will discuss how a researcher should determine if prior research exists on the intended topic. I will also discuss what factors should be used to gauge the quality of previous research as well as the importance of the assessment. Finally I will discuss if the formulation of a research question should precede or follow consultation with scholarly literature Descriptive, Relationship, and Comparison Research Questions. There is a distinct difference between descriptive and relationship research questions. According to Newton, Bower, and William (2004), the descriptive research describes data and characteristics of information being studied by answering question of who, what, when, where, and why. It contains factual information but does not determine the cause or create a relationship between the information. In contrast the relationship question uses the information or data given and describes how one set of information may......

Rains Trident University International Professor: Sara GarskiMGT 499 Module 1 SLP 2 The organization I chose to cover for my Session Long Project will be a small business I once owned. A few years back, my father and I chose to enter into (purchase a piece of) a franchise company “Pittsburgh Paints”; a part of a larger organization, PPG Industries: “Bringing innovation to the surface”. PPG has several different business opportunities, including: paints and coating, optical, speciality materials, chemicals, and glass and fiberglass. My father, being a contractor/builder, in our small town, leased a store front for his previous construction company. In lieu of utilizing this space for his business, we decided to open a House Paint and Deck Stain store. The town my father lives in is small, therefore, everyone living and working in the county must “work together” in order for all to provide for their individual families. With that being said, there was already a house paint store in place, just located on the opposite side of town. To not impose, we chose a company more geared towards “subcontractors” vice the “homeowner” (though we still provided a homeowner line of product for those coming into our store “off the streets”. Our store, selling PPG’s Pittsburgh Paints, was called “ProFormance Paints”. PPG Industries' vision is to continue to be the world’s leading......

...Trident University International Willie Bates Module 2 SLP ITM524: Foundations of Information Technology Management Dr. Mina Richards Introduction One of the most significant paradigm shifts of modern business management is that individual businesses no longer compete as solely autonomous entities, but rather as supply chains (Drucker, 1998). Business management has entered the era of competition. Instead of brand versus brand or store versus store, it is now suppliers—brand—store versus suppliers—brand—store, or supply chain versus supply chain (Bowersox, 1997). Besides responding to the needs of customers, organizations must decide how to manage relationships with supplies and distributors to obtain access to the resources they provide (Gattorna, 1998). Supply Chain management is the integration of key business process from end user to original supplier that provides product services and information that is priceless for customers and for every stakeholder. Supply chain management is not just acquisition and logistical support. Supply chain management encompasses the eight functions of business management. This paper will demonstrate how communication, inventory accuracy, and cloud networking are needed to sustain supply chain management in the future. Case Background 1. What did you do in the simulation? 2. What activities did you engage in? 3. What did you learn about what's going......

...Module 1: Strategic Review - SLP MBA Integrative Project BUS599 April 16, 2014 I am excited to be chosen the VP of marketing at Clipboard Tablet Co. We sell 3 different types of handheld tablets. The X5 tablet is targeted at the price conscious market whereas X6 is targeted at the performance oriented market. X7 is the newest product with focus on consumers that value both price and performance. Let us review the performance of each product category along with my proposed strategy and recommendations for the forthcoming years. Let me Start with X5: Indeed, X5 is aimed at price conscious consumers. The company has historically done quite well with this product in the last 5 years in terms of performance against the competition. The sales for this product peaked in 2013. However, the sales started declining after 2013 in the last couple of years due to saturation of the market. Joe kept the pricing of this product same throughout this period which turned out to be negative for the company as the organization needed a price cut in order to attract customers from other competing products. Since the product was competitive in terms of performance, Joe should have declined R&D investment on this product as consumers were more price conscious than performance conscious for this product. ("forio.com," 2015) Since this product competes in a highly saturated price conscious segment, my recommendation will be to reduce investment in R&D on this product as performance is not......

...ETH301 Module 2 – SLP Introduction For centuries there has been a restriction on the roles of women in the U.S. military. Although there has been an increase of opportunities for women to serve in combat roles, they are still discriminated against in every branch of the military. However, in the last few years with ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the success women have been having in combat, policies are being debated. Utilitarian The U.S. military insists that women not participate in combat roles for a number of reasons. The most common reasons brought up are reasons that affect the majority of soldiers, which happen to be men. However, all of these reasons have been proven to be inaccurate or just plain not true. In light of these findings it remains that women are restricted from certain combat duties. One of the more common reasons stated is that women are not strong enough to participate in battle and that they would hinder overall operations due to their physical weakness. However, it has been proven that with proper training, women can become just as strong as men their same size. (USARIEM) Another reason commonly brought up is that women can’t handle the stress of battle and that they have too much mental anguish. Col. Carl Castro, director of Military Operational Research Program at the Dept. of Defense, has proved this incorrect. He states, ‘‘when I look at the data, I see nothing to counter that point.'' ...The Source of the NFL LOCKOUT Colin Quinn NCM 501 SLP 2 Trident University BACKGROUND AND SETTINGS The National Football League (NFL) experienced its first work stoppage since 1987 when the owners locked out the players that make up the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) on March 12, 2011 (Judge, 2011.) The lockout was set in motion when the owners exercised there option to opt out of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on May 20, 2008 causing the CBA to expire on March 3, 2011 (NFL, 2008.) The Intra-organizational conflict the owners had was the revenue sharing of $9.3 billion the league generated annually. The owners claimed that because of inflation and the increased costs of utilities that the $1 billion credit off the top of the revenue was just not enough to sustain revenue growth and wanted the credit to be increased to $2.4 billion. This meant that the players needed to take an 18% cut of the revenue share to give the owners what they want. In addition the owners wanted to increase the regular season by two games by decreasing the preseason from four games to two games, which the players clearly did not want. Finally, both sides wanted to implement a rookie wage scale but disagreed on how to redistribute the money saved on rookie wages (Oestmann, 2011.) These conflicts in negotiations, along with the owners and NFLPA’s inability to come to a new agreement before the expiration of the CBA forced the owners to lockout their players from......

However, one police department decided not to higher those who scored too high on a cognitive skills exam on the grounds that people who are too intelligent will not be satisfied with their job as a police officer and will end up quitting (Naish, 2013). This of course is a controversial policy that resulted in at least one lawsuit. For this assignment we will be looking at individual characteristics that may predict job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance for police officers. Being a police officer is a demanding job that required strong physical capacity, sharp mental capacity to deal with difficult and life threatening situations, and strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively work with the communities they protect and serve. The issue of what traits to look for in police officer recruiting is a controversial one. Review the background materials on individual traits, personality, and attitudes such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Then read these articles on law enforcement recruitment with the issues in the background materials in mind: Naish, R. (April, 2013). Too clever by half. E.Learning Age, 8.......

A firm can often create a brand name which gives them market power. Market power is defined as the ability to raise prices without losing all demand. Since you are analyzing franchise firms, we can conclude that the brand name is somewhat established. Write a 2- to 3-page paper about the following issues: 1.What type of market do you think your franchise operates? What type of competition does your firm face? Who are some competitors? (Even if you said your firm is a monopoly, think of some subsitutes.) 2.How do you think your firm can increase its market power? The government often has two conflicting roles. It protects consumers by keeping prices fair and promotes a free market (entry of firms). Suppose your firm has a special patent. Do you think patent licenses should expire? Be sure to support your argument with references. SLP Assignment Expectations Use concepts from the modular background readings as well as any good-quality resources you can find. Be sure to cite all sources within the text and provide a reference list at the end of the paper. Length: 2–3 pages double-spaced and typed. The following items will be assessed in particular: •Your ability to understand an application of imperfect competition. •Some in-text references......

As a lobbyist it is not your job to be concerned with the deficit, or the environment, or the general health of the financial system (unless, of course, you are lobbying for an environmental, financial, or deficit reduction group). ...Introduction In today’s society, devices such as the iPad, iPhone, and iPod have become standard household gadgets, and the company behind these products, Apple Incorporated (Inc.) has lead the way in computer innovation. Since Apple released its initial public offering (IPO) in 1980, the company has thrived in all aspects of its business and breaking records on the stock market. This paper will discuss Apple’s company background, analyze the implementation and evaluation of its IPO, and conclude with the reason behind Apple was chosen. Company Background Before becoming the largest technological company in the world, Apple Inc.’s humble beginning started in April 1976 as a small private computer company owned by three men, Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne, and Steve Wozinak. The company originally focused on creating personal computers for the first 25 years of its existence until 2001 when Apple Inc. introduced the iMac followed by the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Over the last decade, Apple started purchasing various software corporations, such as the music company Lala, the personal assistant Siri, and most recently, Anobit Technologies, to integrate their products into Apple’s new computer innovations. Today, Apple Inc.’s main business and operational activities continue to focus on producing and marketing computer electronics, computer software, and personal computers through 357 retail stores in ten countries and its online store (Anonymous, n.d.).
