Creativity, Innovation and Quality
By Dr A. Blanton Godfrey
(Former) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Juran Institute, Inc.

I. THREE LINKED IDEAS: CREATIVITY, INNOVATION AND QUALITY Creativity, innovation and quality - what do these three possibly have in common?

For any business to be successful, we need all three. Creativity drives the generation of ideas, and we need these constantly. We must continually reinvent our businesses. We must unleash the imagination of everyone in our organization. We must create the playfulness and fun to unleash this imagination.

Albert Einstein knew that great thinkers don't have to take themselves too seriously and that: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." -Albert Einstein

Innovation is the necessary step to turn these ideas into useful products and services, something we can provide to our customers, and something we can sell. Quality, the entire set of tools now known as total quality management or TQM, is the way we ensure that we know our customers, their needs and expectations, and how we are going to meet these needs and exceed their expectations. Quality also helps us continuously improve our products and services and to continuously reduce our costs of providing them. In this paper we'll try to pull together these three elements of successful entrepreneurship. All three elements - creativity, innovation and quality - have been studied extensively and independently. There are numerous books (or even libraries) about all three. At the end of the handout, we list some of the ones that we have found most useful. What we hope to do here is give some new insights on the interactions of the three. We wish to provide some new ideas on managing all three together for breakthroughs in organizational performance. Today we are going to focus more on the growth side of quality, not so…...

Personal Ethics

...Donetta Barber GEN/200 Rough Draft October 12, 2012 Personal Responsibility The relationship between personal responsibility and school success is somewhat complex. One reason is to focus on your schoolwork. Second reason is to try and manage your time to get your work done. Finally, don't let your personal life get mixed in with your professional or school life. When someone says focus on your schoolwork. Do they mean for you to slack off and not care? Or should you push yourself and get your work done so you can pass the class? In my opinion, I think you should push forward and get the work done so you really don't have to worry about it anymore. You should always keep a clear head. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do anything. Manage time. How can we manage time if we don't have time to manage? If you put out a calendar and write what you have to do everyday. I'll say you are a good organizer. Most people like that are called "Neat People". If you have a little clutter once in a while it will not hurt you. If you manage a calendar, that's okay too. Just don't manage your whole life around it. Do you know how much fun you are having these days? I guess not after those frat parties and tailgating football games. Don't you have a paper due in less than a hour? How are you going to get it done within an hour? You probably should have gotten started when the teacher gave you the assignment. You need to keep your personal life......

...completing their schoolwork. I am a prime example of this. Before I created any social networking accounts, I had straight A’s and had much more free time than I knew what to do with. Now however, I use social media frequently and it has eaten up my time and concentration. I began to complete my homework at school in the mornings before classes because I concluded that talking to my “friends” and seeing who was posting what was more important than my schoolwork. This behavior began to cause my grades to plummet. Realizing what I was doing to myself, I decided to make a change. I do not check my social networking accounts as much as I used to and my grades reflect it! After long contemplation, I realized that I couldn’t be the only one that had this horrible habit of putting social media before education; someone else absolutely had to do it as well. I had many questions in my head about why such a thing would happen with others. “Do they do it because of boredom? What if they focus more on it because their friends do?” After testing 30 students at Frederick Douglass High School with the amount of time spent on social media as the independent variable and the condition of the grades as a result being the dependent variable, I found my theory to be correct. The more these students used social media, the lower their grades were. They reported that they spent time completing homework at school, spent more time on social media than they did completing schoolwork, and......

...it more difficult to focus and to complete their schoolwork. Children with ADHD tend to get distracted from schoolwork rather easily, and they often behave disruptively Causes: ------------------------------------------------- Genetics The involved genes or chromosomes are not definitively known. Vulnerability to ADHD may be due to many genes of small effect.  ------------------------------------------------- Environment Hypotheses exist that include in utero exposures to toxic substances, food additives or colorings, or allergic causes. However, diet, especially sugar, is not a cause of ADHD. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Personality factors Although there remains much evidence for the genetic etiology of ADHD, one study indicated that the contribution of personality aspects in combination with genetics may be significant. Specifically, the presence of high neuroticism and low conscientiousness in conjunction with genetic vulnerability may constitute a risk factor in the expression of ADH Manifestations of ADHD: * appears to daydream, has trouble maintaining attention (unless the subject is something of interest) * easily distracted (again, unless the subject is something of interest) * difficulty following directions and completing tasks * doesn`t like and avoids tasks requiring sustained mental focus (including schoolwork) * enjoys loud, excessive play * has......

...study include: sitting in an area where I can move in my computer chair, having snacks accessible, and choosing to use power points. These strategies really seem to help me and be beneficial while I perform all of my schoolwork. I find that snacking while I work keeps my hands and mouth busy, which means I am less likely to fidget and get distracted. Rocking in my computer chair also keeps me active enough to where I do not feel the urge to lose focus on my work. I think that working in briefer time frames, highlighting and color-coding, and following along with my finger while reading could all be beneficial to my success as a student. Although it is hard to get a steady schoolwork schedule because of my work hours, working in shorter increments would definitely help and keep me more focused for the briefer time periods. Both highlighting and using my finger to follow along while reading will keep me moving and active, which all help me focus better. I have found that schoolwork can be much easier to do if it is done with an attitude of doing it to please God. Schoolwork, or anything that seems unpleasant to do, can be much more enjoyable if the approach of doing it to honor and please God is applied. I used to be unmotivated to do certain schoolwork assignments, but then I remembered reading Colossians 3:23 and Romans 14:17-18. Colossians says that whatever we do, we need to do it as we are doing it for God, while Romans says anybody who serves Christ with......

Time Management

...actually have in a day. I was the most surprised, however, with how little the planned events differed from the actual events. I very seldom found myself needing to update or create changes in my plan. I did notice that when I sit down to work on schoolwork, I suddenly become the most popular man in the building. Between phone calls, text messages, needy kids and wife questions, I sometimes felt a little pressed for time. I have made an effort to deal with these distractions by letting everybody know how important my study time is to me. Letting the kids know that, like them, daddy now has homework as well. Also setting my cell phone to auto answer calls and to respond to texts with a “ busy doing homework. I’ll get back to you” text should really help. I also plan use headphones when I work to block out unavoidable noise distractions. This should help me feel a little more comfortable with my schoolwork part of the schedule. I think that what this project has shown me the most is that I kind of have a routine that works. My time management skills are a work in progress. For the most part, I feel like the day-to-day activities in my life are very well organized. My biggest struggle was figuring out when I was going to do schoolwork. There never really is a great time for me to sit down for a couple of hours. Once I was able to decide on set times for school, everything else was able to fall into place. I realized that, in an effort to balance my priorities, I......

Time Monitoring Reflection

...time tied together can prevent her from completing her schoolwork early. Also, shifting her Facebook or movies break before bedtime would give her more times during the day to complete other work related tasks. Time wasted tasks Kim spends a large amount of time engaging herself on Facebook, watching movies, and at the gym. Facebook and watching movies would not help her academic growth because it is a social network that causes her to be distracted and lacks attention span. Hence, if she continues to engage herself on Facebook for so long she can reduce her academic writing skills. Similar to watching movies, she does not watch academic developmentally appropriate movies; therefore it does not foster her academic growth. Even in her Head Start job site, the children are only allowed to have a limited amount of time watching videos because their academic performances may be affected. As important, exercising at the gym. Although exercising can really be beneficial for her health she does not have to spend more than an hour exercising. Sometime over working out can cause her body to feel extremely tired. Kim focus too much time trying to lose weight rather than her health specifically. Bad health can lead to poor school performances. Daily Routine Adjustment Some adjustments that can be made are times spent at work and the time spent doing schoolwork. Kim does not have a specific time arranged to do her schoolwork, causing her to fall behind on her assignments. Kim......

Childhood play is a central factor during this phase of development; Erikson says that modern play therapy follows the patter of a naturally self-healing process. Lanie was given an IEP and is given extra help with her schoolwork by the assistant teacher. The school also was willing to help out the family and allow both Lanie and Logan to stay after school at Tiger Town for free, giving Lanie more time to play with kids from school When referring to systems theory, the supra system in this case would be the Medford Public School system as well as the community as a whole. The school is a main contributor in Lanie’s case, because she is unable to reach out to her peers and is incapable of doing her schoolwork to keep up with her classmates. The community in Lanie’s life involves school, neighborhood, peers, and the family’s church. The subsystems within this case are the children Luke, Lindsay, Lanie and Logan, with the focal point being Lanie’s schoolwork and social skills. This is an open case assessment because the Lanie and her parents are working with the social worker in order to help Lanie stay on track within her developmental stage of life. Lanie is able to recognize that she is following behind her class with her schoolwork and is aware that she does not socialize with any of her peers at school. The systems function is to development......

Uh Oh

...“Uh oh,” is the immediate thought that comes to teens’ minds when they see the two pink lines appear on a pregnancy test. Nine months later teens are struggling to maintain their schoolwork along with raising a baby. The solution to this problem in the public school system is providing daycare services for the teen parents. This solution may seem like the perfect way to help teen parents stay in school, but this only leads to more problems. Although school daycare services ensures the safety of children and allows teens to stay in schools, these services inevitably encourages teen pregnancies. According to the CDC, in 2013, 273,105 babies were born to women between the ages of fifteen and nineteen. Most of these pregnancies were unplanned and left adolescents in a difficult situation. The biggest concern for teen parents is whether or not the teen will finish school. Many public school systems have thought of a solution to this problem, daycare service. Schools that have a daycare service allow students to stay in school and not worry about where their child is throughout the day. This will help the student focus on their schoolwork instead of being stressed because they know their child is in a safe place. The thought of walking into a high school and encountering a daycare full of children is insane. Many questions have been thought of when it comes to high school daycare services but the main one is: “Does this encourage teen pregnancies?” To answer this, yes. High......

Computers & Education, 2012, Vol. 59, Issue 2, September 2012, 505-514. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.compedu.2011.12.023. Findings: The researchers examine how the use of Facebook — and engagement in other forms of digital activity — while trying to complete schoolwork was associated with college students’ grade point averages. Students gave the researchers permission to see their grades. The participant group was 64% female, and 88% were of traditional college age, 18 to 22 years old. The study’s findings include: During coursework, “students spent the most time using Facebook, searching for non-school-related information online, and emailing. While doing schoolwork outside of class, students reported spending an average of 60 minutes per day on Facebook, 43 minutes per day searching, and 22 minutes per day on email. Lastly, students reported sending an average of 71 texts per day while doing schoolwork.” The data suggest that “using Facebook and texting while doing schoolwork were negatively predictive of overall GPA.” However, “emailing, talking on the phone, and using IM were not related to overall GPA.” - See more at: http://journalistsresource.org/studies/society/social-media/multitasking-social-media-distraction-what-does-research-say#sthash.ohwPR31t.dpuf...

Television Harmful to Students

...compassion for schoolwork and a habit for excellent work ethics. This is important because, even in today’s society, so many American children watch television habitually in an unhealthy manner and spend an increasing number of hours in stead of more constructive activities. Television is precarious to a students’ potential for education because it consumes precious time that could be spent on schoolwork, encourages inactivity and procrastination and promotes inappropriate themes. As children watch television more and more frequently, they become routinely accustomed to watching specific shows at certain times and for a certain number of hours. Most shows span for thirty minutes and if watched excessively, spending time in front of the television will take a dangerous chunk of the students’ time for homework. Precious time that could be spent on schoolwork, exercise or beneficial recreational activities is limited as students become too attached to an ongoing show they ‘must see.’ Once students lose the time to complete homework and studying, grades will undoubtedly suffer. As grades are put aside and left uncompleted, parents and teachers will realize too late that their children are fixated on watching the TV that results in unimpressive schoolwork. With an apt for the long periods of inactivity that usually results from being slouched on a couch, eyes glued to the screen; students will acquire an ungainly laziness and lose focus. Delaying schoolwork to......

Schoolwork

...  Since I was young until now, I have learned a lot of life’s lessons. And some I go by, and some I use once and then get rid of them. But there are ones that I keep for a short time, and keep for a long time, because you never know when they will come in handy.      The ones that I have still, they are good ones. I keep the good ones, and just forget the bad ones, because why keep lessons that will not help get you some where or get you out of a jam. Having little good life lessons is a lot better than having a lot of great life lessons or a lot of bad life lessons.       There is one main life lesson that I use all the time. And it is, to never be a quitter, because being a quitter is worse than losing. Being a quitter is even worse than being a loser. Cause, who would want to be called a quitter their whole life. I would rather spend extra time trying to get it down and done, then be a quitter. Cause if you quit at one thing, most will quit every time a roadblock is in their way.      Life lessons are good for people. They can help you more than they can hurt you. They really don’t hurt you, because they are like warnings for the bad stuff out in the world today. They are just little helpful hints. They are especially helpful when you are in the time of need. If a life’s lesson hurts you, you are using them in the wrong way.           I think the more life lessons you get and keep is good for your self-character. They show good character about you to other people.......
