Topic Proposal: Creativity Limitations in the Public School System Is the public school system limiting the creativity of the students that are enrolled? Creativity in the public school system is a controversial topic that has sparked the attention of many. We live in a society that enforces strict dress code policies in public schools. We live in a society that that has strict mandated curricula that must be followed, and we live in a society where art departments are being cut from schools. This topic requires immediate attention today because the public school system is negatively impacting the creativity of the enrolled students by not allowing students to freely explore their selves and areas of interest. By conducting research that deals with how the public school system is impacting the students’ creativity from both viewpoints, I will attempt to show the multitude of arising problems with the public school system, and ultimately support my own opinion about the topic. I will also explain why immediate action is necessary and steps to take in order to begin reversing the issue I feel as if the public school system is limiting the creativity of students in many ways. Some ways include, but are not limited to, the enforcement of dress code policies, the mandated curricula that teachers must follow, and the budget cuts that are taking art departments out of public school. However, there are many other opposing viewpoints to my claim. Tim Bradley, a writer for the Huffington Post, is an opponents to my claim, and he suggest that the dress codes enforced are to maintain equality in the schools. Bradley also feel that a strict mandated curricula must be in place to keep teachers relevant and to give everyone the same education. That is not the case for all children, because all parents can afford to send their kids to other creative schools. Student´s role has been relatively passive. This approach does not leave much room for creative or critical thinking and does not allow learners to take full responsibility for their learning. With the paradigm shift in education, creativity has become more valued. The modern world is changing quickly and a person who can think creatively and find innovative solutions for everyday problems can adjust more easily. This essay describes very broadly only a few of the factors that influence student creativity in schools. There is no standard definition of creativity. However, the main two criteria are the singularity and usefulness of the creative activity’s result. Creativity has been grouped into two main categories: Big-C Creativity and little-c creativity. Big-C encompasses mostly people with very unique talents and/ or skills (Mozart, etc) and scientific discoveries, paradigm shifts, etc. Little-c is a term for a much more widespread kind of everyday creativity. ...this Creativity course, I have learned a lot about my level of creativity and how to improve my creativity skills. The books that we read, the videos that we watched, and the assignments we did were a great exercise to practice my creativity. I know that I am a lot more experienced and feel more advanced in my creativity than before I took this class. I am more confortable about expressing my creativity side that I did not know that I had. One of the tools that helped me the most was the reading. I have learned a lot from the book The Giant Hairball. I never thought that I would have learned what I did from the book. I definitely judged a book by its cover and was completely surprised. What I learned most in this book was about creativity in the workplace and the ability to make anything an adventure inside or outside of work. I would look up to any manager who managed like MacKenzie. He was really good at encouraging other people and inspiring others to bring out their creative side. He inspired me to be supportive and encouraging to others that I work with. Eventually when I have a management position where I manage others, I want to be looked up to the way that I would look up to MacKenzie. ...EXPERIMENT 3 CREATIVITY Abstract This experiment studies about creativity using anagrams. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. If someone has ideas, but don’t act on them, that person is imaginative but not creative. Even those of us not in explicitly creative fields must come up with new ideas and insights in order to move ahead. Solving anagrams has been conceptualized as a two-stage process, involving letter rearrangement and then the matching of the rearrangement with a word accessed from memory. The objective of this experiment is to measure flexibility, novelty, and originality thru response production of a series of letters. The subjects were given series of letters called anagrams, and they were instructed to create new words derived from those original letters. The new word can be composed of at least two letters, even the word is nonsense and cannot be located on the dictionary, subjects must write down their responses. The test requires subjects to list nonobvious uses for a common object. In our studies, participants were given three minutes to take this test using a paper clip as the object. Result shows that out of the anagrams that is given in the part I of the experiment it has the many numbers of words that is been created by the subjects with a total of 158 words while in the part II the total responses is 124 .The difference between the Part I and part II is the subjects created more words than the Part II. And also out of the anagrams that is given the procedure in the part I is more likely the easier unlike the Part II.
