Like Campbell’s (1993) hero who faces many obstacles in his path to win the true treasure, Carly persevered to transform HP through the Compaq merger, arguing for synergies in products and services. She even believed a successful meld of the two companies’ very different cultures would occur. Each had elements the other did not, so combined they would create a great new culture.
This view was shared by all board members, save Bill Hewlett’s son, Walter. He opposed the merger believing the end company would make little impact in the PC business and that the cultures could not be integrated. Former HP marketing manager, Theresa Wilcox, supports this, finding that Compaq people were more aggressive and boastful than the humble and honest engineers of HP. Compaq was more autocratic and much less collaborative, with an “us and them” attitude, which would perhaps terminally damage the HP Way.
While Carly had been hired to renew the culture, its risk-aversion and past-orientation resulting from the leadership style of previous CEOs again meant she faced resistance from employees. This supports de Vries’ (1988) argument that leaders can unwittingly disrupt the company for the successor and explains why employees may have idolised Walter, as he represented the past and was perceived as trying to preserve the current culture. In addition, the models in Fig.6 suggest that the level of national collectivism during this time may have seeped into the corporate culture (as employees are also national citizens), perhaps causing them to band together against their “common enemy”, Carly, whose individualist values may have seemed increasingly alien to them.
The air of mistrust intensified during the long public proxy battle which ensued between Walter Hewlett and HP. Carly marketed herself as HP’s cultural hero by saturating the media with images and statements by the founders,…...

...BAB I PENDAHULUAN A.     LATAR BELAKANG Istilah desentralisasi digunakan dalam sejumlah besar literature yang beragam.

...TARCAD: A Template Architecture for Reconfigurable Accelerator Designs Muhammad Shafiq, Miquel Peric` s a Nacho Navarro Eduard Ayguad´ e Computer Sciences Dept. Arquitectura de Computadors Computer Sciences Barcelona Supercomputing Center Universitat Polit` cnica de Catalunya Barcelona Supercomputing Center e Barcelona, Spain Barcelona, Spain Barcelona, Spain {muhammad.shafiq, miquel.pericas}@bsc.es nacho@ac.upc.edu eduard.ayguade@bsc.es Abstract—In the race towards computational efficiency, accelerators are achieving prominence. Among the different types, accelerators built using reconfigurable fabric, such as FPGAs, have a tremendous potential due to the ability to customize the hardware to the application. However, the lack of a standard design methodology hinders the adoption of such devices and makes difficult the portability and reusability across designs. In addition, generation of highly customized circuits does not integrate nicely with high level synthesis tools. In this work, we introduce TARCAD, a template architecture to design reconfigurable accelerators. TARCAD enables high customization in the data management and compute engines while retaining a programming model based on generic programming principles. The template features generality and scalable performance over a range of FPGAs. We describe the template architecture in detail and show how to implement five important scientific kernels: MxM, Acoustic Wave Equation, FFT, SpMV and Smith Waterman. TARCAD is......

Traffic Jam in Bangladesh

...Shafiq, a new graduate student who is supposed to enter the new workforce is stucked in a traffic jam. Tension grew up in his mind because he has to attened an interview. Shafiq is not sure whether he would reach in time. Shafiq incident is not any exception in our country. Traffic jam is a big problem in Bangladesh. Improper road construction, breaking traffic rules are the two causes of traffic jam, which results in various severe problems in our life. The first reason of traffic jam, and in my opinion the most important, is improper road construction. The existing highways, roads and streets are slender and narrow. The roads are not constructed under standard and proper planning. One-way traffic system is not in every places where it is badly needed. In some cases, the roads are so damaged that it can be hardly understood whether it is a road or a pool. Moreover, when the authority repair the damage rods, it also creates a problem to the traffic system. For instance, most of the time the authority chooose the Rainy season for repairing the damaged roads. In Rainy season, traffic jam normally occurs frequently than other times and repairing the roads in this time make the situation worst. For all of these reasons, lack of proper road construction is one of the main reasons behind traffic jam. In addition, breaking the traffic rules is another cause of traffic jam. In big cities, lots of rickshaw-puller pull their rickshaws on the roads and streets. As most of the pullers...

Study Habit

...collectively but all students do not get the same grades. At this stage, we see underachievers and high achievers in educational achievements. Most of the teachers get puzzled on the sight of such situation and then either try to ignore or push too much. The treatment without the investigation into the responsible factors looks to be highly unscientific. There may be a number of reasons like different levels of intelligence, non-availability of sufficient physical facilities etc. But one of the reasons is that the students fail to make good efforts to learn the lesson taught in the class room. The study habits of the students could play pivotal role in learning process reflected in the academic achievements of the students. Rasul (1968) and Shafiq (1978) concluded that the habits have positive relationship with the learning, which result in better achievements. The students may fail to maintain higher level of achievements due to a particular study habit. It is, therefore, desirable that the students should be motivated toward such habits of study by which they may score good grades with better understanding of the subject matter. According to Kundu and Tutoo (1993) it has also been found that recitation method of study is better for immediate retention. Morgan (1956) stated that almost every college student feels at one time or another that he should improve his study habits. So, it is the responsibility of teachers concerned to play their role by inflicting effective......
