My subordinates would describe me as a leader that can motivate and support the team. I do motivate and encourage my team to balance their lifestyle and advancement both professionally and personally. I support my team by mentoring them of changes within the Air Force, core values, and responsibilities in the unit and the Air Force. My supervisor would describe my followership skills as very committed and competent, and have no issues with integrity check and taking initiative. I give feedback and advice to my supervisor.
I use the Team Leader style in my work center. I find it very effective because my team shares the same values and work ethics as I do. I lead by positive examples, and encourage my team members to perform and reach at their highest potential. As a NCO, I would describe myself as a thinker, and an influencer. My work center knows that I am always open to try new ideas, and hear different perspective. I strive to display my high moral behavior, strong work ethics, and strengths and weaknesses. On the other hand, my supervisor would describe me as a NCO that cares too much because I take time to understand and promote my subordinate’s abilities, needs, and goals. I would say my strengths are leading by example, and having no fear to admit my mistakes or weaknesses. My essence or what makes me who I am is my goofy approach. However, my work center knows when to take me…...

...Reflective Thinking Essay Number 1 Abraham Lincoln the sixteenth President of the United States once said "It often requires more courage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong." This quote often inspires me to try and do what is right. And as a leader doing what’s right is one my top priorities. I believe this all stems from the way I was raised. My mother and father have both been contributor to who I am. They brought me up to be respectful of other, to look a situations from another point of view and no matter how far you fall you can always overcome the odds by not giving up. When I think of a leader my last Commander comes to mind. When a situation happened he would give a back brief on the events that had taken place. Then, if we had made a mistake it was identified so we could correct it the next time with a statement like “This is what we did wrong”, but he would always end on a positive note like “Now this is what we did right”. My leadership style is similar. I have had supervisors that were present just for the pay check and then those that would encouraged and inspire me. A few of my Airman have told me directly that I am the best supervisor that they have had. One of my Staff Sergeant had said “You’re the first supervisor in my eleven years to give me a real feedback, treat me like a person and not just a number, listen to me, ask what I think and encourage me to do my best.” His wife is in my squadron also and has often told me that she is......

Reflective Thinking in Education

... Reflective thinking, in distinction from other operations to which we apply the name of thought, involves (1) a state of doubt, hesitation, perplexity, mental difficulty, in which thinking originates, and (2) an act of searching, hunting, inquiring to find material that will resolve the doubt, settle and dispose of the perplexity’. (Dewey, 1933 p.12) Part 1: With this in mind, consider critically and analytically the purpose and value of reflection and reflective practice, supporting your discussion with relevant reading. Dewey (1916) defines education as ‘It is that reconstruction or reorganization of experience which adds to the meaning of experience, and which increases ability to direct the course of subsequent experience.’ The pertinent word to note in this quote is ‘experience’. Since Dewey highlighted the importance of reflective practice in the early part of the 20th Century, many other academics and practitioners have explored and written about it. Many different reflective models have been......

...POLS 432 Dr. Robert Wood Xu Zhao 0886325 Reflective Essay During 16 weeks, I had a lot of fun in this POLS 432 class. I chose this course because it was major required. As an international student, I felt a little scared at the beginning of the semester since I know nothing about the American policy and I don’t have any friends in this class. It took me a while to adapt into this class style. First, we started from Shambaugh/Weinstein book, and the West Wing episodes. Shambaugh/Weinstein book is about introduction of the Art of policymaking process. From the web book description, it says Author Paul J. Weinstein Jr., who was Chief of Staff of the White House Domestic Policy Council during Clinton's administration; he brought a unique and valuable insider's view to the book. This book also provides some real life examples that helped me a lot in reading some of the concepts. For example, I had no idea of how to write a memo when Dr. Robert Wood introduced us different types of memos. After class, I went back home and read the format of a memo and examples related to that memo, I got the idea about what is a memo look like and how to write it. Indeed, I think the time I get to know about what was going on and what this course is about is right before spring break. Dr. Robert Wood was very thankful. The midterm study guide he provided for us helped me a lot about knowing the course materials, especially the White House staff members. I have learned a lot while I......

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY FOR MARKETING, INNOVATION AND DESIGN Reflective writing is an intricate process of inscription, what one learned from a particular area and how it would be useful in the future. In my reflection I would construct an assertive image of what exactly happened during the marketing module. Looking at the outcome of my reasons to pursue my MBA, my strengths, and the areas I want to improve on. The marketing, development and Innovations module has the learning and developing goals for me as I see a clear need to reintegrate into the learning environment, since I do not have a first degree, I was exempted because of my eight years of management experience. Being part of a working world and doing a MBA means that I would be faced with many challenges, personally, professionally and educationally. However, I embraced the challenge even at times it was difficult to juggle my commitments. Initially my thoughts were that marketing module was simply about sales, however, it was mainly about Innovation and design. From the first lecture, the main thing that attracted me towards marketing was the efficient teaching style of the Lecturer, practically the way of explanation, teaching methods and the learning tools that the lecturer used which were mainly power point slides, which was then emailed to the class. The Lecturer motivated and encouraged me, this factor has positively contributed to the amount of interest I formed towards the subject. The marketing module......

Reflective Thinking

...Reflective Thinking Essay I’m the type of leader that leads by example. I would not expect my subordinates to do something that I would not or have not done myself. I would expect my airmen to try to follow in my footsteps, those are my standards. If they go above and beyond that, my job will be easy. The leadership style I use is Management by Exception-Passive. However, I wouldn’t say I would wait for something to go wrong before taking action. You have to see the signs that something might go wrong and fix it right there before they get in trouble. I believe that the more communication you have with your subordinates, the less likely they are to stray away. I’m the type of NCO that will take a back seat sometimes and just observe. As I said before, I’m the type of person that leads by example. I will not bark out orders and delegate everything. Instead I will work with you to get the job done. I like to see people take initiative. I shouldn’t have to tell someone to take out the trash if the trash bin is over flown, for example. My strengths are my work ethic, maturity level and my ability to solve problems. I’m the type of person that doesn’t mind staying after work hours to finish a job. I’ve always been mature for my age, now I have the age to go along with it. It’s just my demeanor, I don’t play around. Finding solutions to problems is one of my stronger points. It’s something that I enjoy and it’s a good tool to have. My essence is not an open...

...REFLECTIVE THINKING ESSAY TWO This week I am going to focus on two things, the first being the most significant thing I learned last week. I learned last week that the leadership style that I seem to fall into is the Management by Exception style. The reason I use this style is due to the nature of the activity of my shop which tends to be idle until we get jobs specific to Aero Repair. I tend to stay in the MBE-Passive style while the shop is idle and move into the MBE-Active as the work arises. I discovered that as the shop is idle it is easy to fall into this style of MBE-Passive and kind of take a back seat and deal with things as they come up. When the shop gets work it tends to be time sensitive and require strong leadership, this is when I tend to adopt the MBE-Active style. The second thing I would like to cover this week is, if I could change one thing about my leadership, it would be to try and develop myself more into a Transformational leader. I feel that by developing myself more in this leadership style, it would have a direct impact on my personal development as a supervisor, and have a positive impact on my subordinates. By capitalizing on the idle time my shop has between major jobs, I could work on developing the four I’s within this leadership style. The key to this development would be to take a more active role in developing my subordinates as leaders, conducting training sessions, and working on my own personal technical growth. By being proactive......

Reflective Thinking

...Reflective Thinking Essay #1 It is hard to say exactly what kind I leader I am. I have not been one for very long, but I would like to think that I will be an effective leader. I am able to put aside my own beliefs and views in order to get the job completed effectively and on time. I understand that by working with people underneath you that not everyone responds to situations and personalities the same. That is why we did the four square assignment so early on in the class, so that we could identify our own personality traits as well as those around us and how to better adjust ourselves to work with opposing personality types. Having never been a noncommissioned officer before it is hard to say what type I will be. I think that I will be fair but just, as long as my subordinates do as they should and follow the rules and regulations that they were taught from the beginning of their careers I do not see any issues. I may not be the most liked person around but leadership is not a personality contest. It is about getting the job done promptly and. effectively I use a variety of various leadership styles. If you use one style of leadership then you are not an effective leader. You need to be able to flow from one style to the next in order to be effective. If I had to state a style that I am most comfortable with thin I would say that my major style would be management by exception active. I believe that the rules are in place for a reason and that you must comply with......

...Marcellus Bowie English 102 Reflective Essay Reflection English 102 has brought a really great point to me in life that no matter what class you are in you have to think creative. In the entire course there was nothing but writing. I can honestly say English 102 has taught me to be a better researcher and a better writer. The writing for me was super hard in the beginning of the course. I have never seen myself as a writer I suffer from an extreme case of writer’s block which causes me to give up without giving a shot at the work. The extra help has made me feel as writing will never shy away from you in life so just write. The annotated references played a big role throughout the course this semester. The role annotated references had been the whole outline of this course without the annotated I had nothing to write about. First I struggled with the concept of the references I realized that there wasn’t a research paper without the references. The references were one of the most time consuming aspect of the paper. The research question had to have a connection towards the refernces The difficulty I encountered in English 102 came about from the grasping of the material, the details in the rubric, and the guide lines. The biggest thing I had a problem with was staying on topic, and giving too much of my personal opinion in my writing. The structure of the class is made to stay on top of your independence of the reading and writing. During the course of the class......

...Reflective Essay on Managing Compex Situations Name Course Details Professor’s Name University Affiliation City and State Date Reflective essay on Managing Complex Situations Introduction As a health care assistant working with the district of nurses, I have gone through some of the most complex situations that often leave me with complex decisions. Ideally, some of these situations have greatly impacted on my understanding of various patients who I handle on my day-to-day activities in the health care sector. While working with District Nurses who are involved with visiting patients in various homes in the community, I encountered patients with various psychological and physiological disorders. Prudently, it is worthwhile to note that the patients who we visited had various health problems that ranged from individuals who were housebound and could not travel to seek medical attention. Besides, some of the patients had nursing needs such as leg ulcer dressing, wound dressing, pressure ulcer dressings, and catheter insertion as well as its removal. Description One of the most complex situations that I experienced was trying to take blood from an elderly patient with dementia. Since the patient was at her residential home and had never seen me before, she was not aware of my main purpose for visiting. Moreover, I had no prior knowledge of her state with dementia. At the time of my arrival, the patient was comfortably sitting in her chair while cradling her...

Reflective Essay

...Reflective Essay I actually remember doing something similar to this my junior year in high school, the assignment was entitled “Me as a Writer.” How far have I truly come as a writer since then? Focusing on what this class has taught me, I can already say without any doubt that my writing has improved compared to what it was my first day of college. There were so many aspects of this class that positively influenced me as a writer. To name just a few: the discussion board, the assigned readings, and you as the instructor. The discussion board made me more open to criticism, it taught me that in order to become a good writer you must first learn to be a good communicator. You have to be able to communicate your ideas with others and listen to the ideas of others. It’s a sort of give and take process. Before, I was more closed minded on other people’s input on my work, I thought I could do just fine by myself for the most part. Now, I’m willing to listen to criticism and I understand how to use that criticism in order to better my writings. The readings were also super beneficial to my development as a writer. I learned so much about how to be an effective writer. I learned how to use certain techniques to improve the quality of my work. The readings allowed me to take a step back and see the art of writing as a whole, and then allowed me to focus in on specific characteristics of writing. For example, Kleine’s article taught me that I needed to become a more balanced......

Reflective Thinking Essay #1

...Reflective Essay One While I don’t often inquire about their feedback, I believe that my subordinates would view me as someone who is easily approachable and willing to offer time to listen to any issues or concerns they may have, and be capable to help them arrive at solutions. They would see me as that supervisor who would never ask them to take on any task that I wasn’t willing to do myself, and in turn, I would hope to earn their respect, trust and motivation to get the job done. My goal is for my subordinates to view me as that NCO that treats them like people, rather than talk to them in that condescending way that most of us remember coming up through the ranks. Finally, they would view me as the NCO that rarely fails to recognize their achievements and successes. My supervisor’s opinion of my followership would vary. While I have the enthusiasm, ability and commitment to learn from those above me, I don’t always display the confidence and self-reliance necessary in making critical decisions. I’m often asked by my supervisor, “How would you handle this if I weren’t here?” or “What would you do if you were running this shop?” My supervisor would tell me I need to step up, make important decisions to include unpopular ones, then be ready to accept the responsibility for any blow-back as a result. I don’t think I’m able to put my finger on any one specific type of leadership style that I employ. I think that different circumstances call for different......

...RFLECTIVE THINKING ESSAY #3 Before coming to NCOA I felt that I was a good NCO and an awesome leader, but after last week’s interpersonal section, I found out that I have a few areas to improve upon. My first issue is that I have always saw the art of counseling to be a form of punishment or even sometimes a tool to strike fear in my subordinates. Oh but was I wrong. I have learned that counseling is not just for reprimanding, but it is a tool used to empower the airman and NCO’s that work for me in order to develop their abilities to achieve individual and unit goals. I have also learned that there are two different types of counseling, personal situation counseling and performance/professional counseling. I see now that I do conduct mostly personal situation counseling because my counseling session are usually in reaction to a situation that has occurred. This is definitely a behavior that I plan on changing when I get back to my home station. I truly feel that due to my caring and friendly attitude towards my subordinates, I have opened the eyes of some of the sterner and straight to the point NCO’s in this course have a new outlook on dealing with their own subordinates. Some of the NCO’s do not feel that they could “hang out” with their subordinates off duty while maintaining the professionalism need to complete the mission on duty. Since I view my airmen and NCO’s as family with a hierarchy, I don’t have any issues with having them over my house. I also......

...Module 6 Reflective Essay Prior into taking this course, I always been confused growing up in what’s the difference between psychology and sociology. Without a doubt, this class has put a spin on what’s the difference. I knew a lot about the social world we lived in and how it affected our daily lives but never thought that there was so many ways it has done so. As I look at our daily living and the difference terms that is associated to sociology I have learn in this short period that the social side is a big circle that interacts with each other. But how do we learn to live in it and survive in it. If we are educating ourselves on the structure of our its affecting us daily, maybe our world won’t be so bad. As I mentioned in the tread, I think what caught my attention and put everything in a perspective was the primary and secondary groups. When you ask us to list what we belong too and how it affects our daily lives. That assignment allowed me to see what part I actually play in the social side of society and obvious it’s a pretty important side, whether I’m helping society or the one that can be causing the problems. I learned the importance of the two groups and how it affects me and the ones around me, the involvement in the community, the involvement among my appears. My insight and what and who I belong affects someone and or something everyday. How we look at it, is what’s important. But we as a society are not educated on our problems and issues and......

...Reflective Essay Two I have learned a lot from being at NCOA from the past week. II am going to take this vast knowledge back to my work center and hopefully I will be able to improve the work environment there. We covered a lot I am going to discuss my “aha” moment, what I have learned from individual projects, and what I could change about my leadership. My “aha” moment was when we covered the four lenses. Especially when we learned what the four colors mean. I realized that by me being and orange I am very outgoing but I am also a gold and green. The orange and the gold are opposites and the green I tend to ask a lot of questions and panic over small things. Based on this lesson I realize why me and my supervisor tend to not get along its cause he is a blue and I am an orange. He is a true blue too he wears his emotions on his shirt sleeve. He is also very much into family. What I have learned from individual projects are that I can apply the lessons learned here to the reflective essay from last week and what kind of leader I perceive myself to be. While writing that essay was hard for me cause it is really hard to judge yourself. Plus then you have to perceive how your subordinates perceive you. I tried to be biased in that and it worked out I found that I am not much different than the other NCO’s in my. What I could change about my leadership is how I approach diversity. I have to take in to account the temperament of people, I have been bad about......
