I Shall Paint My Nails Red is a short 10 lined prose piece written by Carole Satyamurti. I liked this poem because it is simplistic but can easily be analyzed with a deeper message. I noticed that a few of the line draw attention to a women’s normal role in society and the household. Because a bit of color is a public service
Because my lover will be surprised Initially I was not sure if the author wrote this as a way to almost empower women or to simply say that they can wear whatever eccentric bright colors they want. Individuals, in society, are easily bounded by gender roles and expectation including suggested attire and overall appearance. So maybe, this red nail polish is symbolic for a rebellious act against the expectation for women during this author’s time period. Then I asked why the author choose red instead of bright blue, purple, or even black. But the color red may be associated with any type of stimulation, excitement, energy, beauty, lust, and many more. With the latter knowledge I support the claim that red is used as an act against the women’s role in different domains of life. In the last line the author writes “Because it is reversible.” I thought it was strategic to put this line at the end because it was short but this line concludes the the poem and sends a separate message on its own. Individual, women or men, are frequently judged my actions or impulsive behaviors that are temporary. This made me think of my parents response when I got my nosed pierced. Yes, I understand its a big deal to some. “Yvette why are you adding these piercing to your face .. it will leave a scar.” But, my continuous response was that this is a temporary piercing and will be gone in a few years. They finally got used to it Similar to the character in this poem, I was acing out by doing something that is temporary but, possibly, out of the…...

...Understanding Red Cross’ Past, World Efforts, and Relief Programs in Southeast Asia Our world is in continual turmoil, wars, border disputes, genocides, natural disasters and many more scar the globe annually. One can barely fathom all the problems that our world faces; we cannot prevent everything that can happen. However, there are many men and women through out the world that risk their lives daily in order to help those that cannot help themselves. These are the men and women of the Red Cross and Red Crescent society, who devote their time, sources, and at times their whole lives to help others. Red Cross has been around for many decades and has provided relief for many situations throughout the world; the most profound being for natural and man-made disasters through out the world. The Red Cross was created in 1863 by Henry Dunant who had watched a bloody battle ensue between armies of imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance in Solferino, Italy. As over 4000 men lay dead, wounded or dying lacking much needed medical assistance, Dunant organized local people to bind the soldiers' wounds and to feed and comfort them. He called for the creation of neutral relief societies that would tend the soldiers and the people affected by wars paving the way for the future Geneva Convention. Thus in 1863 the idea was finalized and following year, 12 governments adopted the first Geneva Convention; a milestone in the history of humanity, offering care for the wounded,......

Shades of Red

...The Shades of Red By Angela Yohey We were children pushed together by marriage. We became sisters by choice much later in life as adults. Colleen Michelle was born August 28, 1971 in the Bloomsburg hospital just nine months after me to a woman not yet my mother. Her birth was just like her, in a hurry to start living life. She decided to leap into the world a whole 19 days early; no one, not even a doctor was going to tell her she needed to wait one more second to do what she was ready to do. She has continued to live her life with enthusiasm and energy. She was raised as an only child in a family that now has three daughters. I was raised with my biological sister Stephanie by our mother in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Our parents divorced when I was five and Stef was eight. Colleen was four when her parents divorced. Her mother and my father married, and soon after they moved to Pittsburgh where Colleen would be raised. I always thought she had the best of him, and for that I was envious. I did not know their relationship had struggles from so far away. It would take years before a child would become a daughter and a stranger would become a father. Her very nature is flamboyant, as are the many shades of red in her personality. When she enters a room, the door flings open with a flurry of activity and chatter. It is straight to kisses and hugs that are not your average embrace. She takes you into the fullness of......

Red Blood Cells

...Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. When there is a lack of healthy red blood cells it causes a condition called iron deficiency anemia. This is a common type of anemia for someone to have. Iron deficiency anemia can leave a person very tired and short of breath. This type of anemia can be corrected by taking iron supplements but sometimes additional treatments may be needed especially if there is internal bleeding (Mayo Clinic, 2012). Plasma, red blood cells, and platelets are an important part of body fluid. Blood has a lot of different functions like transporting oxygen and nutrients to lungs and tissues, forming clots to prevent excess blood loss, carrying cells and antibodies to fight infection, regulating body temperature, and bringing waste products to the kidney and liver, which filter and clean the blood (Human Diseases, 2010). Plasma is the liquid component of blood and is a mixture of water, sugar, fat, protein and salts. The plasmas job is to transport blood cells through the body along with the nutrients, waste, antibodies, clotting proteins, and chemical messengers that help maintain the body’s fluid balance. Red blood cells are the most abundant cell in the blood, accounting for about 45 percent of its volume. Red blood cells look like a donut or lack of a better term. These cells start in the bone marrow and mature for about 7 days then are released into the blood stream. These cells are important to the system because they carry a special...

Paint My Nails

...really stood out to me in the poem, I Shall Paint My Nails Red, was the acts of a woman talking about feminine things that woman like to do to change up their appearance. After thoroughly analyzing this poem I came to the realization that it was much deeper than that. Every line of this poem is a distinct statement filled with self-expression and confidence. I Shall Paint My Nails Red by Carole Satyamurti, takes the simple act of painting your nails and shows the meaning behind it. This poem hits home to me because painting my nails is something I enjoy doing with my grandmother. My grandmother has never gone a day without having her nails painted, and after reading this poem I understand why. To me, womanism is the main theme that Satyamurti is trying to portray in this poem and it is being shown through beauty, strength, and passion. Beauty can represent a numerous amount of things, and in this poem Satyamurti does a remarkable job at capturing the true meaning of beauty. “Because I am proud of my hands” (Satyamurti 2), after I broke this poem down piece by piece, the imagery in this line caught my eye. I relate the pride she takes in her hands after painting them to my grandmother and how I never see her go a day without having her nails painted. Although painting your nails is a simple thing, it makes you feel good about yourself. My grandmother walks with confidence every day and though it may not be just because of her nails, I am certain that it does play some sort......

Nine Inch Nails Compare and Contrast Paper

...Critical Thinking Worksheet Teresa Horton Com / 170 April 8, 2012 Dr. Laura Wilson Which Version Of “Hurt” Would You Prefer? Nine Inch Nails versus Johnny Cash The song “Hurt” written by Trent Reznor and originally performed by his band Nine Inch Nails is a melancholy, haunting song. Nine Inch Nails’ version was recorded in 1994 and rerecorded and released by Johnny Cash in 2002. Each of the performers has a style, which some people would argue is at opposite ends of the spectrum of popular music; one is what is referred to as “Industrial Rock”, the other is country. Indeed, the musical genres are diverse; however, the song “Hurt” transcends the boundaries between old and new, hard and soft, and especially the differences and similarities between these men. Nine Inch Nails is known for their industrial rock sound which combines synthesizers and percussion to produce sounds that remind you of a steel yard in Pennsylvania. This is probably a testament to the fact that the bands’ lead singer, Trent Reznor was born and raised near those steel yards (“The Nine Inch Nails Wiki,” 2012). Johnny Cash’s version speaks to those familiar with growing up during a rough time or not having much; people considered the down-trodden. Growing up in a religious family in Arkansas seems ingrained in the way Cash performs the song. Johnny lived a hard life on a cotton farm (“Johnny Cash,” 2012). Reznor and Cash both graduated from high......

What Makes the Red Man, Red?

...Americans and the whites see the others as savages. The video portrays the Native Americans as savages, kidnapping a white man for no obvious reason. The white men are seen as savages in the eyes of the Native Americans because they have come to take their land (Dawson). Pocahontas “…represents the positive stereotype who respects the earth and communicates with trees and animals. Although Pocahontas is portrayed in this more positive role, it still typifies a stereotype” (Brunette). In the Disney movie, Peter Pan, the scene in which the song “What Makes the Red Man, Red?” is sung, gives the viewer a very stereotyped interpretation of Native Americans. The ‘red man’ is wearing buckskin, headdresses, moccasins, beaded jewelry, etc. whereas the white children in the scene are wearing ‘normal’ clothes, dresses, shoes, glasses, top hat, etc. (“Disney’s Peter”). Three questions are asked of the white man, 1) what makes the red man red? 2) when did he first say ‘ugh’? and 3) why does he ask you how? These three questions get answered, though in a very inaccurate and stereotypical way. In this movie, “Princess Tiger Lily’s father represents the negative stereotype of being uncivilized and savage as he holds Wendy’s brothers hostage” (Brunette). Children’s books are just as guilty of misrepresenting Native Americans and showing stereotypes. In Virginia Grossman’s Ten Little Rabbits, the reader is able to learn counting with rabbits. Though, the rabbits are dressed as Native......

Nail Tech

...Since I was in about the seventh grade, I have always loved getting my nails done. I loved watching all the steps; measuring the acrylic nail to the natural nail, the scrub that quickly softens your feet and how perfect and effortlessly the nail polish was applie I mostly loved watching how the people who did them made the process seam so effortless. That’s what I want. I want someone to write about me and ask me how I became so good at what I do. The smile I get when I walk in and the even bigger smile I walk out with is amazing and I want to be the reason behind someone’s wide smile and healthy, pretty nails. Unfortunately, I have little to no experience with Nail Technology, but I am always eager to learn. If my first choice of being a teacher doesn’t fully work as I plan it to, I will always have an additional place, although, I don’t see it as backup. I believe learning the ins and outs of Nail Tech, will not only help me, fully understand what’s happening to me at the salon and appreciate it more but begin to look into jobs in the field and eventually my own shop. For my near college future I would like to attend Montgomery Community College for my first two years and then transfer to a university in the south, where I’m originally from, and also where I would love to live and have an infinitely growing career. This course puts me at a little advantage because it gives me a little background knowledge and experience before taking it in college, hopefully pushing to......

Nail Science for Nail Services

...Nail Disease 1 - Paronychia Paronychia is a bacterial infection that occurs around the nails. The area around the nail fold can be inflamed, red and swollen and resulting in pustule cuticles. The main symptom is a painful, red, swollen area around the nail, often at the cuticle. There may be pus-filled blisters especially with a bacterial infection. It can be caused by injury to the area eg biting off or picking a hangnail or from trimming or pushing back the cuticle. It is also common among persons with diabetes and those who have their hands in water for long periods of time. Bacteria cause the condition to occur suddenly. Nail changes may occur. For example, the nail may look detached, abnormally shaped, or have an unusual colour. A medical practitioner can usually diagnose this condition by simply looking at the sore skin. Soaking the nail in hot water two to three times a day helps reduce swelling and pain. Antibiotics can be prescribed. In severe cases a medical practitioner may cut and drain the sore with a sharp instrument. Part of the nail may need to be removed. If it is fungal paronychia, antifungal medicine maybe prescribed. To prevent paronychia: ✓ Care for the nails and the skin around the nails properly. ✓ Avoid damaging the nails or fingertips. Because the nails grow slowly, an injury can last for months. ✓ Do not bite or pick the nails. ✓ Protect the nails from exposure to detergents and chemicals by using protective......

The Calvary Nails of Rock Bottom

...Roberts, Joe ITDS 1145 – American Jesus Summer 2012 The Calvary Nails of Rock Bottom In many Alcoholics Anonymous meetings the term “rock bottom” is used as often as the word recovery. In the painting “Calvary,” the artists presents to the audience two characters in a small room with objects of sinful desires. What is striking however, is the two very different men portrayed. A tattooed, pierced, and rough looking man is administering drugs intravenously into his arm. Or is it his arm? Behind this character, worthy of an intervention I might add, stands a bearded man dressed in white who is looking up at the ceiling with agony on his face. It is unclear whether or not it is this man’s arm, or the man in the chair. It is important to note that both arms have tattoos. While this could be argued as both men’s arm, let’s zero in on another detail that strikes at the heart of the audience – the face of the man dressed in white. First of all, who is this man? I asked my daughter, who is only 6 years old, to identify the man in white. Her immediate response was “Jesus.” How is it that we have been groomed to establish a connection with these images of visual piety? Is it because I take my daughter to church twice a week and have other images of this man Jesus in my home? Surely, this is not the case. So let’s assume that because this man is dressed in white, resembling pure and innocent, and he resembles many other forms of art depicting Jesus, that this man is indeed Jesus. ...
