Examination of Clinical Psychology
Clinical psychology is a profession that focuses on helping individuals with various troubles and concerns they experience during their relationships, emotions, and physical selves. One example of what a clinical psychologist can do is to see if a child has a learning disability or an attention problem that might contribute to poor school performance by using intellectual and educational tests (Plante, 2011). In this paper, the history of clinical psychology will be examined as well as its role of research and statistics. In addition, clinical psychology will be furthered examined and how it differs from other mental professions such as social work, psychiatry, and school psychology.
The field of clinical psychology was founded in 1896 by Lightner Witmer (1867–1956) who opened the first psychological clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1888, Witmer completed his undergraduate studies and earned his PhD in psychology at the University of Leipzig (Plante, 2011). Further he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to become director of their psychology laboratory. He applied his principles of human behavior to help a student that was not performing well in school and as a result, found out he had trouble in spelling, reading, and memory, and recommended tutoring, which later proved to be a successful intervention (Plante, 2011). He focused on assisting children with primarily school-related difficulties and challenges.
Today, many of the principles that Witmer developed in his psychological clinic continue to be used such as providing a diagnostic evaluation before offering treatment procedures and services. Later the military helped psychologists look more into clinical psychogoly. The military sought the help of clinical psychologists when soldiers would return with what…...

...Psychological Testing Janice Watson PSY 475 June 19, 2015 Shirley Wilson Psychological Testing Introduction This paper will discuss the major assumptions and fundamental questions of psychological testing. It will define what testing it, describe the major categories of test, their uses and who uses these tests. It will also compare and contrast reliability and validity and how they affect psychological testing. Test There are various ways in which an individual can define test. A test is a system for accomplishing something such as observing behavior and illustrating it with the help of numerical scales or prearranged categories (Hogan, 2007). There are common elements between “tests". They test some procedure or device that bring forth information. The procedure or device gives information about some behavior, and the test are a systematic, standardized procedure (Hogan, 2007). Another definition of psychological testing is that they are a written, verbal, or visual assessment done to determine the cognitive and emotional activity of individuals (Health, 2015). Just because there are many ways to define test does not mean each answer is wrong. It depends on the subject matter at hand and how the individual chooses to define it. Categories of Test There are five major categories of test that include personality, interests and attitudes, achievement test, neuropsychological, and mental ability tests (Hogan, 2007). The personality test includes......

During my first week of this course this was something that became evident. Personality is a science in itself. It is used to measure why people are the way they are. In analyzing my own personality I in turn am beginning to have a better understanding of who I really am. How would you define personality? Personality can be described in many different ways. “According to the definition by Henry Stack Sullivan, an influential 20th century psychologist, personality is the emerging relational patterns between two people” (Mayer & Korogodsky, 2011). I personally would define psychology as a number of specific character traits combined to form a specific way of being and communicating. What are some key personality features that define you? The eight basic aspects of personality are perspective, psychonanalytic, ego, biological, behaviorist, cognitive, trait, humanistic, and interactionist. (Friedman & Schustack, 2011). To fully understand one’s key personality features. In determining my own key personality features these aspects must be considered. I am innately shy, somewhat introverted, and a people-pleaser. I think these three features are key in defining my own personality. What are some key concepts or......
