Do you believe in Universal Healthcare?
COMM 215
Carolina Gasca

Universal Healthcare? Healthcare Reform? The United States is considered by most to be the greatest country to ever grace the face of the planet. It has the largest military, the largest economy, freedom of speech and religion, and one of the first “successful” democracies and of course, the American dream. Yet, what is the one thing that most people seem to forget? That the United States of America, the most dominant force in the world, is also the only westernized industrial nation without a Universal Healthcare system. At an astonishing $2.6 billion spent on health care in 2010, or 18% of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product, the United States also spends more than any other country in the world on a failing health care system, only half of which actually goes towards hospital visits and physician care. Clearly, something has to be done, especially as 48.6 million Americans remain uninsured. The question then begs, what can be done to solve the financial woes of America as well as to ensure that no American has to worry about a lack of medical insurance? The most obvious, and actually in many ways simplest, solution is to develop a universal, comprehensive, organized and public healthcare system that covers all Americans for medical necessities, including doctor, hospital, long-term, dental, drug and preventive care costs. As soon as the term “Universal healthcare” is brought to light, the far right often slams the proposal, labeling it as a socialist ideal that cannot and should not be achieved. Even if those politicians and individuals do not believe that it is practical, even though it is, it is still far and away the right thing to do. As I previously detailed, almost 50 million Americans, or one sixth of the population, is currently uninsured, with many millions more facing the…...

...Persuasive Essay Many people considering obtaining degree want to know if a formal education pays off in the years to come. Most people say yes. Presently, nearly 90 percent of young adults graduate from high school, and approximately 60 percent of high school graduates start college the following year. Students choose to attend college for many different reasons. One biggest reason for college attendance is an expectation of future financial success as a result of earning a higher education degree or diploma. To work as an entry level position without a college degree could be difficult to climb up the corporate ladder in reality. Although you’re earning now and be laughing at your friends without a dime because they’re still in school, but actually you’ll likely be earning pretty much the same in five years time. You could earn on average up to half as much again as high school graduates if you decide to study an associate degree. If you decide to go for bachelor degree level, you could be earning on average two and half times more. Much of the educational increase seen in today’s world is due to a more educated younger population taking the place of an older, less educated population. As this trend continues, and more and more individuals seek to pursue higher education, and advancing highly educated population will arise, taking advantage of higher paying jobs and career opportunities. About career stability, you may have an offer of a job you can...

...Persuasive Essay Name University of Phoenix Essentials of College Writing COMM/215 Michael Turner June 05, 2012 Persuasive Essay I can't believe that the government spends so much money on projects and overspend on something as simple as a desk. The Federal Government, for the last two years has not had a pay raise. The government has frozen all pay raises at the 2010 pay scale. This is a bunch of crap. We have people out there busting their ass everyday for what? I understand that the economy is down right now but the government is not going anywhere. This freeze has hit me in a bad way. It's like no matter if I work hard or don't work at all, I'm still going to getting the same pay. There is no incentive for me to go out and try to get better at what I do. But I'm not like that because I have pride in what I do. It's just knowing that my pay is going to be the same until the freeze is lifted. The House Appropriations Committee last week approved the bill, which was silent on whether to allocate funds for a federal civilian pay boost. President Obama recommended a 0.5 percent pay boost for federal workers in his fiscal 2013 budget request. The civilian pay raise provision is frequently included in the financial services appropriations bill, which requisitions funds for several federal agencies. (Palleschi, P. (2012). Really what is a .5% pay raise going to do? That won't even pay the taxes on the money I make extra. I just don't believe what...

...Hannah Farelli Block 4 Mr. Zigerelli Grammar/Composition 6 March 2014 Persuasive Essay Does coffee help improve one’s performance in school or at the workplace? According to several sources, such as the makers of the infamous Livestrong brand and researchers at Mayo Clinic, it does. Caffeine not only aids in motivating one to wake up faster but also spurs cognitive performance, improve memory, and concentration. Combatting fatigue from rising early in the morning, coffee also helps improve alertness as well. The caffeine in coffee has proven successful at improving both selective and sustained attention. A study done by the ISIC gathered two test groups. One group was habitual coffee drinkers; those who consume coffee on a regular basis as a part of their daily diet. The latter group, the non-coffee drinkers, was those who do not utilize coffee in a consistent diet. In those who habitually consumed coffee, the dosage of caffeine needed to increase performance levels was 400mg. In the non-habitual consumers, the dose was 200mg. These test subjects proved that caffeine consumption helped deter sleep inertia, therefore decreasing the amount of mistakes or accidents in the workplace. Sleep inertia is characterized by grogginess and lack of motor dexterity and is the usual cause of one desiring to return to sleep upon awakening (ISIC, 2004). Furthermore, the positive effects of caffeine can be found in attentive performance. ESFA, a selective group of scientists,......

...Benefits of the Affordable Care Act Benefits of the Affordable Care Act In this essay I will be discussing the benefits of the new affordable care act and how it has impacted as well as my local community. Firstly, the affordable care act allows people who did not have access to insurance or be able to afford the insurance through their employer to get insurance coverage at a reasonable cost. Second, the affordable care act does not allow for insurance companies to not pay a claim based on it being a pre-existing condition which was the case prior to the affordable care act being passed. Also the affordable care act gives access to women for preventative health services which is important to me, my wife and my two daughters. In the following paragraphs I will explain the reasons why I support the affordable care act and reasons that everyone should support the new health care law. One of the reasons why I support the affordable care act is that if you would lose your coverage through your employer and need to continue health coverage the cost of the affordable care act insurance is much more reasonable then having to purchase the cobra insurance, which many of the times is about four times as expensive as your insurance through your employer. The affordable card act has directly impacted a state that I used to live in which was Kentucky. It has been reported that nearly four hundred and fifty thousand people now have health insurance in Kentucky that previously...

...Shirley Jackson ENGL 101-B21 LUO Prof. Kevin Hart August 21, 2014 Persuasive Essay – APA Americans have rights under the Constitution of the United States which include but are not limited to freedom of speech, religion, choice, and to express their own opinions. Individuals are free to choose how they live and what type of vehicle they choose to drive; however, with those individual choices come individual responsibilities. Although one person’s opinion or choices may not be agreeable with the choice or opinion of another, it does not mean that those choices or opinions are atrocious. Hochswender’s essay is persuasive in that it alludes to these facts. As consumers there are many items we buy that are manufactured in other countries, however, that does not mean that there is support for their political issues from the American consumer. A mother of six drives an SUV, not because of gas mileage, or it makes her feel powerful, but because it is practical and logical for her situation, as opposed to fitting a family of eight into a Volkswagen. Hochswender referenced the location in which he lives, “100 miles north of New York City,” (as quoted in Muller & Weiner, 2009, p154) where the weather makes driving an SUV a practical choice for him. Safety of our children is often the case of parents that make purchases that will involve their children, especially cars, Hochswender states he would rather he and his daughter be in a SUV than a Corolla when faced with......

...Persuasive Essay Olga Acosta COMM/215 Sept. 10, 2014 Craig Westman Persuasive Essay Obama care is the unofficial name of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act That was approved as a law in March 23, 2010. The objective of Obama care is to give access to all American to quality medical insurance according to their economic possibilities and reduce health care spending in the United States. The new health care law is not perfect, but it offers more than what we have now and what we had before. I live in an apartment and it’s located on the second floor; one day I was bringing the garbage and boxes out because we had just recently moved to those apartments and quickly went down the stairs and thinking that it was the last step; I slipped and fell to the ground. I got up quickly but when I started to walk, I felt a great pain in my knee. No one was around and the first thing I did was to ask for help. Luckily my son heard my screams and I could be able to walk home. Sitting on the couch in my house I realized that I had very swollen knee but it would be impossible to drive my car to the hospital so a neighbor took me to the emergency room. We arrived at the hospital and they took a few x-rays and found out that I have a fracture in my knee and needed immediate attention. We live in a border with Mexico and for me it was very easy to cross the bridge and be treated in Mexico because it is much cheaper the consultations and medicines. This time it was......

...PERSUASIVE ESSAY DANA SCOTT COMM/215 November 10, 2014 MARY THOMAS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT PROCRASTINATE There are many ways to avoid success in life and the number one cause is procrastination. Procrastinators sabotage themselves. They put obstacles in their own path. They actually choose paths that hurt their performance. First, we must ask what exactly procrastination is. According to dictionary.com, procrastination, pronounced proh-kras-tuh-ney-shuhn, is the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. If you still do not understand, I will put it in a sentence for you. “He was smart, but his constant procrastination led him to be late with almost every assignment.” According to Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, twenty percent of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. For them procrastination is a lifestyle. It cuts across every aspect of their life. They do not pay bills on time. They miss birthday parties and other important activities. They get bad grades in class. They file income tax returns late. They leave their Thanksgiving dinner shopping until the night before thanksgiving. They are always a day late and a dollar short. Theres more than one flavor of procrastination. People procrastinate for different reasons. According to Timothy Pychyl, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa......

...Persuasive Essay I can’t wait until you turn 21 and then you can buy us alcohol!” something I’m sure many of you have said to an older friend or sibling. Well, many of you may not know this but I was surprised when I learned that the law in IL only states that the possession and purchase of alcohol for those who are underage is illegal. ProCons.org informs us that exceptions do exist on a state-by-state basis for consumption at home, under adult supervision, for medical necessity, and other reasons. So this brings about a very controversial question that I have. Why can’t we lower the drinking age? Yes, there are risks, but there are also many facts that bring the pros of this recreation to light. (First, let me say, that I am definitely not delusional in saying this would be a perfect plan, but even though there are risks they do not outweigh the good) Before we go into the pros and cons of this situation I think you should all know the reason as to why the drinking age is 21 anyway. Well, according to a blog from a reputable source called the mental floss, we ended up with a national minimum age of 21 because of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. This law doesn't prohibit drinking per se; it merely requires states to outlaw purchase and public possession by people under 21. So, that being said, the first risk everyone seems to touch upon is that drinking under the age of 21 can interfere with brain development. I have learned from previous classes......

...December 8, 2014 Persuasive Essay Downsizing Force I joined the United States Army June of 2013. From even before I joined the US military it began downsizing its strength. This will significantly reduce effectiveness of the US Army on a large scale. The downsizing is a direct result of the US military budget reduction. I’m strongly opposed to the downsizing of the US Army because in order to maintain the defense of the United States of America we need a large strong force to repel our enemies. Also it takes away our ability to ensure the basic human rights that every person has the right to enjoy. The drawdown of the Army will shrink it to its smallest size since before World War II. With the budget for fiscal year 2015 the downsizing is designed to leave the military capable of fulfilling US defense strategy and defending the homeland against strategic threats. Deeper cuts will be made in fiscal year 2016 if the sequestration returns. Chuck Hagel, the Secretary of Defense, and other military officials have commented that some of the budget choices will create additional threats in certain areas. The Army alone will shrink from 520,000 active duty soldiers to 440,000 soldiers. If the budget cuts will create additional threats in certain areas why would the President and our senior military leaders allow it? It’s endangering the lives of the American civilians. Any risk is too big of a risk. The cuts assume that the US will not be involved in any large prolonged......

...Persuasive Essay Robyn Ralston COMM/215 January 26th, 2015 Paul Korzeniowski Persuasive Essay Even though adding a Turf Field would cause higher taxes, adding a turf field to a school al-lows all area schools in the district to have a field to play on and other clubs can play weekend sports on the field which will generate more crowds. Many school districts have annual votes to have many items voted on to have added to their school district. Greece Central in Rochester, NY has always played around with the thought of adding a turf field to one of the area’s high schools. With four Middle/High Schools, the ques-tion becomes where do we add it? On January 13th, Greece’s school board meeting was held, and the board approved on going forward with a vote on the stadium. The district decided they will have a vote on March 24th, 2015 to have a turf field added to local high school Greece Ar-cadia (McDermott, 2015). Adding the turf field to Greece Central would allow for all the high school teams to have a place to play a home game at night. At this current time, the only time any of the high schools in Greece plays the night game is at another district where they already have a tuft field under the lights. Adding this new stadium with the lights will be able to host these games. Many parents have stated having a Friday night game under the lights would make it so they would be able to attend more games. According to "13 Wham" (2015), ““It's a culture I think......

...Sushmita Das December 11, 2015 Period: 6 AP English 3 Persuasive Essay #10 College is that step into adulthood. You live on your own, make decisions by yourself, and etc. Many college students have the burden of student loans. On top of that they want to work hard for good grades. Making one mistake in college can honestly affect you for the rest of your life. Classes and teachers are way tougher than they are in high school. So do you think it is really necessary to have them do extra community service? College students should not be required to do community service. First, college students shouldn’t be allowed to do community service because of keeping up with a good academic record. Grades are an important factor in college. You honestly can’t afford to slack off. Statistics states,” 75% of college students suffer from major anxiety”. Focusing is a major priority for all your classes if you want to strive for good grades. You need to work consistently on reports or essays and study so that the material is a known thing to you. As a matter of fact, college students shouldn't be allowed to do community service because of limit of time with students who do sports. Most people don’t go to college just for education but to pursuit of a sport with a scholarship. A NYU student stated, “I have a scholarship for crew and practices are at least 5 hours, I have barely have no time for school work let alone do anything else”. “I also have to......

...Persuasive Essay Draft Matthew Callender G124/ENC1101 Section 13 English Composition - 2015 Spring Quarter Physician assisted suicide/euthanasia should be legal. When you hear the word suicide, most people associate it to the mentally ill, depressed or otherwise disturbed but there is a growing segment of people across the globe, who wants to die due to a wide range of disorders making life unbearable. Many argue that forcing a person to live with an incurable and painful disorder is like condemning them to a life of torture. Physician assisted suicide should be a decision a patient can make as long as they meet certain criteria and submit to mandated screening. A sane and sober person should have the right to choose. We allow people to treat themselves with snake bites, drinking horse urine and a wide range of absurd treatments. Why can’t we choose to treat a terminal disease with death? It’s perfectly legal for an 18yr old to smoke cigarettes knowing it exponentially increases their chances of severe illness and death. The restriction of choice infringes on basic human rights to live free of oppression and pain. If a person chooses suicide to alleviate suffering what right do we have to stop them? Restricting assisted suicide is not only condemning the patient to a life of pain and suffering but often the family of the patient with crippling debt and emotional stress. Imagine watching someone you loved suffer through excruciating pain day in and day out...
