Slave history in the United States goes back to 1619 when a Dutch trading ship brought twenty Africans, Virginia. Many more ships with Africans laborers followed. Being of African descents on these shores soon became virtually synonymous with being a slave. In 1661, Virginia enacted the first law in the new colonies recognizing slavery (Sowell, 1981). Slavery was the foundation of the southern colonies’ plantation system. White people ran plantations using slave labor, and until 1808, some were also slave traders. Traders –Europeans, Africans, and north Americans-forcibly transported some 10 million Africans to various countries in the Americas, including 400,000 to the United States. On small sailing ship, hundreds of slaves were chained together for the several weeks it took to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Filth and disease killed many and drove others to suicide. Overall, perhaps half died en route. In sum, for nearly 400 years, people of African ancestry in the United States have struggled for social equality. As a nation, we have come far in this pursuit. Overt discrimination is now illegal, and research documents a long term decline in prejudice against African American (Firebaugh & Davis, 1988; J.Q. Wilson, 1992; NORC, 2007).

Depending on how the term is defined, as many as 230 million people around the globe are virtual slaves. The US state department, for instance, defines modern slavery to include forms of forced labor, involuntary domestic servitude, sex trafficking and child soldiers. American sociologist Kevin bales is probably the world’s foremost expert on slavery. He puts the number of enslaved people at 247 million – and that’s using a…...

Are Guns a Good Thing or Bad Thing?

...Are Guns a Good Thing or a Bad Thing Melissa Cushman Vincennes University Jasper Campus English 102 Professor Mayfield 15 April 2013 Are Guns a Good Thing or Bad Thing? Have you ever wondered why the media never shows anything positive that happens due to guns? Guns have never gone off by themselves on purpose. There is always a living person pulling that trigger. The government keeps trying to take away our guns when the President himself has armed security guards for him and his family. People need to take a stand for what they believe in and fight for their rights! The government should perform more extensive background checks instead of just taking the guns away. Guns should not be outlawed because “guns do not kill people; people kill people”. There has been much debate in our country about gun control and whether or not it is necessary. The event that brought all of the debates to the surface was the Sandy Hook shooting that happened on December 14, 2012. Following this tragic event, the country gave political figures and the President of the United States a reason to push for more control on this issue. Some of the biggest problems facing the American people are confiscation, stricter laws, and 2nd Amendment rights (Madison, 2013). When rumors came out that the government wanted to confiscate all of the guns in the country people became outraged. The ones that do not own guns to begin with of course supported this rumor which ended up becoming...

...the universe has a purpose (telos) just like a watch has a purpose (to tell time). For example, the purpose of a human heart is to pump blood. [3] The Argument from Design Premise 1.If an object has a design then it must have a designer. (A watch, for example, could not have come into existence without a designer.) Premise 2. Nature has a design. (For example, the human heart has a specific design and function.) Conclusion 1.Therefore nature has a designer. Conclusion 2.The designer of nature is God. We can walk through these premises. Premise One is the major premise of the argument. It instructs us to look at something that is unknown to us and determine if there is any kind of “design” in that thing. Paley’s main example is a watch. We all recognize that the gears of a watch are designed to turn hands in order that we know what time it is. But the premise asserts something very strong at this point: It says that any object that has design must have a designer. Premise Two of the argument claims that nature has a design. One supporting example would be the organs of the human body. The human eye has a clear purpose: to allow the body to see. For all (or nearly all) of the organs of the human body we can give a similar explanation. The second premise also asserts that nature as a whole has a design. This is a bit harder to prove than each organ having a function. But think of the oxygenation cycle. Plants breathe in......

...Each event in my life has shaped me to be who I am now I suppose! Of all things, my first event, being born probably shaped me the most, literally! In reality though, being born in 1996 means I am the youngest of my family of eight people. I definitely have earned my sociological youngest child traits by growing up with everyone, and my only child traits of being the only child living in my house for the past three years. These were pretty much ascribed status and event of my life. Starting kindergarten is the next event on my timeline. I put kindergarten on here because it was a whole new atmosphere for me. I was mostly only used to being around people older than me. I never attended much daycare, maybe once or twice a week. I never went to preschool, and I only knew a few kids there. I remember being excited and nervous. I was pretty shy the first few hours! I met my best friend on that first day of school, although I didn’t know it until a few days later that we would be best friends! At first I hated her because I thought she was stealing my best friend neighbor, Emma Eubanks. It turned out great though because we were absolutely inseperatable for many, many years. In second grade I had to take speech classes for a little while because I had a lisp. It was so embarrassing to leave class for that! It made me feel stupid because I was normally one that always excelled in class. In the 3th grade I began challenge/TAG programs. That made me feel pretty......

The Order of Things

...Essay about ’The Order of Things’ Love can hit you like a tornado. Both create an aftermath in which you can often find yourself totally reset, with new ground rules to play by. The short story ‘The Order of Things´, written by Judy Troy investigates themes such as the resetting of a mindset, the value of our short lives, but most of all: love. This essay seeks to focus on the setting, the two main characters, their relationship and symbols to underline certain points of the text. The setting in this short story takes us to the small town Worland, which is located in the state of Wyoming, USA. As with most small towns in the United States, we get the feeling that it is a town where people have close relations with one another. For instance, the first line of the story mentions “…the first inning of the Worland Lutheran softball game…” as the place where our characters Lucy and Carl meet. The fact that it is a Lutheran softball game points towards Worland being a religious town as well. The story takes place over about half a year, from August to around February. This makes for some interesting use of the weather, which is used to underline certain points and moods: “Then in bed, with the sound of rain on the thin roof, they talked about their marriages.” (p. 8 l. 60) Everyone knows the sound of rain dazzling on a thin roof. It screams intimacy. Intimacy is something Carl has never really been used to dealing with. He is the result of a rushed marriage without intimacy:......

...Fear August 2, 2015 at 1:01 AM It’s been awhile since we did a book club post, huh? I had originally intended to post this in July instead of the Discussion Post; however, so much crap was happening on the back-end side of the site (multiple DDoS attacks, the submission form turning evil after the last plugin update and causing the server to overload itself, etc) as well as various offline issues that I ended up just having to shelve this post until things were a bit calmer. So if you were wondering why there was no Discussion Post last month, that’s why. I had originally intended to have submissions re-opened (check the sidebar Submission Status for the latest update on this; please don’t derail this post with questions that are already answered there – when submissions re-open, it will be a separate post) all the way back in the beginning of July; so I had felt that having that announcement + Discussion + Book Club would have left the front page looking a tad too bloated. But it seems the site had other ideas about how things should play out, so here we are. Better late than never, right? SO. The book that we’re going to talk about this month is very well-known; given that it’s almost twenty years old and spent a lot of time on the Best Seller list, many of you have probably heard of it already. However, it’s striking how well it’s held up and how relevant it remains – many of the scenarios the author details are still happening every single day. The Gift of......

The Things They

...Mark Koon Professor Paquette English 102 / F / 8:00 AM Friday, October 15, 2015 The Things They Carried In the short story, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien a Lieutenant by the name of Jimmy Cross and his squad carry a list of many things, some of these things heavy physical loads and some heavy emotional loads composed of grief, terror, love, and guilt. The things each soldier carries depends on the soldier himself including his priorities and his constitutions and also his rank or his specialty for example Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carries maps, compasses, and the heavy burden of the responsibility of his men’s lives. A nervous soldier named Ted Lavender carries marijuana and tranquilizers to calm himself down and the religious soldier Kiowa carries an illustrated New Testament and every single one of these men carry the figurative weight of memory, fear, and hope and the literal weight of one another. In this short story the author uses the title symbolically for both the seen and unseen things that men at war carry and to represent the traumas and hardships they have suffered that they will carry for the rest of their lives. These soldiers know they can die at any moment and so when the inevitable happens and a soldier is actually killed in action extra tension stems from the fact that Lt. Cross knows he is responsible. When Ted Lavender is killed in action one of the soldier’s, Kiowa, cannot stop marveling at how fast and hard Lavender hit the ground.......

...confederacy. These laws basically made it ok for everyone who was white to segregate themselves and other races into separate schools, doctors, hospitals, jobs, even blood. Making life and getting access to basic rights much harder. These laws gave loop holes for lynching and murdering. We do not know to this day how many African American lives were taken from lynching and other forms of murder. The black man took all the blame from the white man and there was little to nothing they could do to stop it. It was an accepted way of life for them. These laws were still in place, especially in the south until 1965. Henrietta was a victim to this racism as well as the men from the Tuskegee experiments and Emit Till and countless others. The thing is though, back then they didn’t think there was anything abnormal about racism. Management Reset

...Management Reset A Personal Summary and Thoughts The basic premise of Management Reset, as stated in the introduction, is “not about convincing you that organizations need to be sustainably effective; it is a book about how organizations can be sustainably effective.” The book opens with a brief management history that imparts the business, social, and economical backgrounds and well as a basic vocabulary and explanation list used in the rest of the book. We are introduced to Command and Control Organizations (CCOs), High Involvement Organizations (HIOs), and the approach that the book will focus on Sustainable Management Organizations (SMOs). We are given a general summary of the shortcomings of the former two systems or management, as well as a summary of why the reset is needed and the major components required to sustain the change. The new SMO approach employs the concepts that; They do not fear change, they embrace it, they value people, both employed and served, they actively support social well being, they consider the communities in which they operate equal to the profits and bottom lines they seek to achieve. The SMO concepts of “Organizational effectiveness” and the four core issues to “The Way Organizations Are Managed” are introduced in this section, and are the key concepts discussed throughout the rest of the book. Organizational effectiveness states sustainable effectiveness should be achieved in three areas: people, planet, and profit, also known as the...
