My Personal Story

I think that I would be a good candidate for getting this scholarship. My name is Erika Higgins and I am a single mother of four. I have a set of twins that are seventeen years old, a girl and a boy. And also I have a five year old daughter and a two year old son. My seventeen year old son is severely disabled. He was born with hydropheleus and cerebral palsy. He cannot talk or walk he is confined to wheelchair. I had them when I was twenty-one. I had a lot to learn on how to take care of him. I learned how to change his feeding tube. I learned a lot from taking care of him. That is why I want to become a nurse. I love helping and taking care of people, who cannot take care of themselves. I was doing fine taking care of him and his twin, until I started getting social security for him and working as a medical assistant making money. I also was helping my family out.

Until I put my foot down and told them no and it went downhill from there. If my mom asks me for money I said no she called department of children and family services on me so many times that I gave up guardianship of him to her but it still did not stop. She was getting his checks but he was living with me. So after a while I decided to move in with her so I can save up and buy me a house. I do not know why I did that because it really turned out worst. In 2005 I was living there and she tried to ask me for money and she called me every foul name in the book. Her and my daughter left to go out and I was left alone with my son. I was crying horribly so I said that I cannot take it anymore. I went into the bathroom and took a handful of pills. I tried to commit suicide, when I came out I looked over at my son and he start smiling at me. I said to myself, what I was doing this stupid thing for so I ran into the bathroom and vomit up the pills. I cannot do that…...

My Story

...things that define me are my adoption, heritage, and passion for the game of softball. It is not just one aspect that defines me. It is through my past experiences, and future ones that shape who I am as an individual person. My adoption would have to be what defines me the most because being adopted shows a person that they can’t take their family for granted. Building and keeping the strong relationship with my family is very important to me. These relationships continue to grow every day. Without my family I don’t know where I would be right now. The basically saved my life and that’s what family is for. Another thing that adoption has taught me about is inclusion. My family took me in when I needed it the most and they didn’t treat me like I was an outsider even though they didn’t know anything about me or where I came from. Including someone is something me and my friends are doing could change someone’s life for the better. I was taught that I shouldn’t exclude anyone and if they are shy go over to them and ask if they want to join. Continuing with the family idea and the adoption, my heritage is also another thing that defines me. With being adopted I was only introduced to my adopted family’s heritage which is Irish, German, and Scottish. However, this summer I decided to ask my mom what my true heritage was and she told me that I was Greek. By me being Greek it explains a lot about my appearances. A couple of my appearances really clarify my Greek background.......

Story About My Literacy

...I was sitting in my room behind my computer and was looking and the blank screen on my laptop and was thinking to myself what story I should tell about my literacy? I’m not really sure if I can come up with anything! But then I start to think about the time when I was just a little kid, and I couldn’t read or write. I was very interested in reading since I was a child growing up in Iran. I remember that I was grabbing my mom or my dad magazine’s and look through all the pictures and wondering what is it saying? Then I would go to my dad and asking him to tell me what all these word surrounding these pictures means? So my dad was putting his glasses on while he was smiling at me and looked at the page that I was pointing at, then he start to read it to me loud and clear; at that point I was very jealous of my dad, that how can he read so well and I couldn’t ? and he would tell me that:”Don’t worry once you go to school they will teach you and you can read anything you want as good as me or even better”. My father explained to me that he felt books were very important and that I had been exposed to books from the beginning. I was read to by many family members such as aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. He also stressed that I was a very verbal child at a young age and had been around mostly adults for the first few years. My vocabulary started at about five months and by two years had clear structured sentences. As I was learning how to speak, I was also introduced to...

My Response to the Story of an Hour

...My Response to the “Story of an Hour” The story of an Hour is a story written by a female writer, Kate Chopin. It describes the emotion changes of a woman Mrs. Mallard, who was afflicted with a heart trouble. The clue that “Mr. Mallard was dead” driving the development of the plot. The story begins with the bad news of Mr. Mallard’s death. People around Mrs. Mallard told her the news in great gingerliness in order not to deepen her heart trouble. After hearing that, Mrs. Mallard had an internal struggles for quite a while and finally accepted the fact that her husband was dead. However, when she saw her husband back, her heart disease relapsed because of joy. After reading the story, I found Mrs. Mallard a contemporary woman. The reason why I said this is through the way she react towards the bad news of her husband’s death. As a woman, she is sorrow when she heard about the bad news. She recalled the happy times with her husband and wept. However, she did not plunge herself into sadness for a long period like many women in the past. Instead, she start to plan the life without her husband. That’s why I regarded Mrs. Mallard a contemporary woman. As a heroine and the leading actor of the story, Mrs. Mallard, or Louise, show readers an image of woman who dare to pursue a new life. Literature written by female writers can always arise my sympathy. Woman becomes the leading actor of the story and the plot is centered on the daily life of general woman. No political events,......

But my son nothing about your dying makes any sense to me. You were 29 years old. You were brilliant, you were such a kind, generous soul, you were beautiful and you were loved so much by so many. Life went downhill from that moment in time, first I had to break this to your dad. You well know we are the kind of couple that reacts to any given situation with more hostility then love. ...possible to combine my farming life with a Penn foster online degree. In a way, I guess I never had the faith in myself to accomplish a degree and do well at it. Upon starting my online associate degree in paralegal studies, I have come to learn things I never believed I could do. One has to take it upon them self to believe, want and achieve, I feel I am accomplishing this as I write. My life is a little easier than others as I do not have children, and I work and live on the same property, which makes travel time nil. Farming life can be hard work at times and much harder during harvest. Learning from Penn foster has taught me to be organized, positive, and determined to finish my studies and be successful in balancing life with study. It can be very hard and stressing sometimes trying to juggle 11 animals, an Apple and Cherry orchard, my home life as well as study. I believe that I must manage my time evenly with home, work and study. Studying online is great simply because I can study in my own home at my own pace. Living in the country can be quiet hard sometimes when it comes to driving and getting places, most places are more than 60 miles away. I find it easier to study at my own pace and in my own home. I am finding and learning many ways to manage my time and converse online. The Penn foster library is a great way to get resources and literature that is useful for my degree;......

My Story

...1983 and have been raised by two great parents who have served in the church pastorate for thirty years now. I have one brother, about seven years older than I am. When I was still a baby, we moved to Hawaii where my Dad served as pastor for just under two years. I remember very little of my toddler years, and barely remember the next place we moved to, which was Grove, Oklahoma. I can tell you that we went from sunshine and beautiful weather to dodging tornadoes; one in particular literally jumped over the church we had taken shelter in when I was about three. Our family moved back to Tennessee to pastor where we lived in several different places. By the time I was eleven, we had just moved to Anchorage, Alaska where my father served as a pastor and as the state youth director. We lived there for four and a half years and to this day, it was one of my absolute favorite places to live. As a pastor's kid, I became the quintessential church brat. I lived, ate, breathed, and slept in the church. And just so you know, this was a literal situation; we actually lived in an apartment that was built into the back of the church. It was in Alaska that I first decided to follow Christ, encountered the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and where God confirmed the call of ministry on my life. The first sermon I ever preached was in Kotzebue, Alaska. I preached on Revelation where God is speaking to the church of Laodicea and urging them to be hot or cold. I remember it vividly because I used......

My Transformation Story

...Nigeria, learning the values of hard work, contentment, focus and integrity from my mum, who singlehandedly raised I and my two sisters, having lost our dad when she was just twenty eight and just as I neared my third birthday. However, as I grew up, it was discovered that I was a very absentminded and forgetful kid, who secretly hated schooling, but was very vocal, inquisitive, loved to read autobiographies write articles and debate with classmates and teachers and quite surprisingly, I did quite well in elementary School and even was best student in the entrance examination into secondary school. I learnt from childhood that to succeed in life I should study hard, graduate, get a good job and work at it till retirement and it became my ambition to get a good job after graduation and climb the pinnacle of success from there. However, that mindset had since changed. At the boarding house in secondary school, I became laissez-faire about schooling and was always in trouble with seniors and even the school principal and got suspended a few times. My mum withdrew me from the school in my penultimate year to a school nearer home for close monitoring. A close friend of the family decided to mentor me and amazingly, I became more studious and serious minded and studied hard for my final exams. However, I did not make the matriculation grade to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos. My mentor therefore chaperoned me into studying Estate Management at Yaba......

...Paglas, Maguindanao Investing in trust and confidence building with local partners and the local community is an imperative that cannot be short-circuited or rushed. Background Unifrutti Philippines Inc. (UPI) is one of the country’s biggest banana exporters, shipping an estimated 44 million boxes of bananas a year to Japan, Korea, China, Iran and other countries in the Middle East. In 1997, it made the bold decision to invest in a banana plantation and packing house in the municipality of Datu Paglas, province of Maguindanao. At the time, the town was considered a hot spot for kidnappings, ambushes, and other forms of violence associated with the political conflict between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the government. The story of how John Perrine (Chief Executive of UPI) and Senen Bacani (head of Ultrex Management and Investments Corp.) formed a partnership with Datu Ibrahim “Toto” Paglas, to start what Perrine describes as Unifrutti’s most successful investment in Mindanao, is well documented and widely told, even appearing in Wall Street Journal. The investment came out of a partnership among the Saudi trading company Abdullah Abbar & Ahmed Zainy Co., Israeli farming experts, the Italian De Nadai Family, and Chiquita Brands International through Unifrutti Philippines (the Oribanex Group), together with • This case study is based on interviews with John Perrine, Edgar Bullecer and Senen Bacani, apart from various write-ups and case studies previously......

...because I just don’t have the time, and when I do I feel so tired and exhausted cos I’ve been working crazy shifts every night and I worry that soon enough I’ll lose confidence and give up completely settle for something average and become the person I never wanted to be Even as I’m saying this all I keep thinking is god I sound so depressing and soon enough people will get bored and eventually you’ll leave and so I have to force every bit of my energy in to be super enthusiastic and happy when that is so far from the reality  The other night I came home from work and I just completely broke down - Just crying by myself alone in my room at 6am but I woke up the next day and carried on living life as if everything was fine in the denial that if I keep repressing these thoughts, somehow it’ll get easier in time It won’t. It’s sad cos all people see is what I show them on the outside, they have no idea about all the hurt and pain I hide how I cried myself to sleep last night or the fact that I’ve been avoiding skyping my best friend, cos I don’t want to show her this side the side where I just can’t keep it together and the most fucked up part is that I have no idea why? I feel both overwhelmed and empty all at the same time See where I live people don’t go on to do great things, they stay in the same place they grew up and have kids, and then they grow up and do the same exact thing, it’s just an endless cycle and before you know it you’re tied......

My Army Story

...My Army Story I was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. At a young age I moved to a small town in North Carolina called Grantham. Virtually my entire extended family lived on the exact same road. I graduated High School in 2004 and following High School I continued working at Burger King for $5.65 an hour and trying to go to college. I eventually delved into heating and air conditioning, as well as construction framing houses. There was nothing for me there anymore. My career was nonexistent and I absolutely had to get out of my house and town. I enlisted into on January 10th 2006. I didn’t have a clue that the Army would put me on a path that would give me everything that I hold dear in this world. I attended Basic Training and AIT at FT. Benning, GA in order to become an 11B Infantryman. I chose to be in the Infantry because it didn’t seem right to be in the military and not be directly in the fight. I arrived at my first Duty Station in Ft. Lewis WA with orders to report to the Xth Battalion Xth Infantry Regiment. I found out later that X-X IN is one of the most decorated Battalions in the army, so I was happy to be a part of that. In June of 2006 I met my best friend. He’s my brother in arms as cliché as that sounds and forever will be. I met my wife on September 16 2006 and I haven’t been able to look away since. If I had never joined the Army I wouldn’t have my Wife or my Best Friend. In April 2007, after copious amounts of training and......

...My Life When I Met Danny This is how my story goes. I was talking to a friend of mine and she had basically knew how much heart ache by all the guys who I have been dumped by or have been cheated on with or even who I was stupid enough to have sex with and they dumped me after. Well she had given me this guy’s number and told me to give him a call. Well I figured what could it hurt to give him a call. Well he and I talked for three hours trying to get to know each other and we figured that we should meet. Well we were going to meet up on his day off but I couldn’t wait to see him and meet him so I asked my friend to take me to his work when he was working cause I was so excited to meet him. So she and I went there and I was asking her which guy he was. She pointed at him and said this is the guy. He didn’t know that I was the woman he talked to on the phone. So I saw him and instantly I knew he was the one for me. I honestly told my friend that I would never find another one for me. So when I walked up to him it seemed like his eyes lit up and he was so excited that I was the one he met. Well I knew that I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life or so I thought. Well we started dating and to be honest he and I had sex on our first date and it was amazing. I love him and knew that he was the one once we had a little more time to meet and hang out face to face to get to know each other better. I knew that he wasn’t going to hurt me. Well I was told that he was only......
