...CHAPTER 3 CONSOLIDATION SUBSEQUENT TO DATE OF ACQUISITION QUESTION SOLUTIONS 3-1. An 80 percent ownership requires the preparation of consolidated financial statements. Regardless of the method used to account for the investment on the parent’s financial records, the investment income or dividend income is replaced on the consolidated income statement by the subsidiary’s revenue and expense accounts. The equity method is required if the parent prepares separate financial statements. Search term “ownership” reveals 8 hits. The relevant item in this instance is paragraph 17, reproduced below: 17. The Board concludes that the equity method of accounting for an investment in common stock should also be followed by an investor whose investment in voting stock gives it the ability to exercise significant influence over operating and financial policies of an investee even though the investor holds 50% or less of the voting stock. Ability to exercise that influence may be indicated in several ways, such as representation on the board of directors, participation in policy making processes, material intercompany transactions, interchange of managerial personnel, or technological dependency. Another important consideration is the extent of ownership by an investor in relation to the concentration of other shareholdings, but substantial or majority ownership of the voting stock of an investee by another investor does not necessarily preclude the ability to exercise significant......

The Life After Manuel L. Quezon

...I.PERSONAL BACKGROUND Manuel L.Quezón, was born in Baler in the district of El Príncipe. His Spanish parents were Lucio Quezón and María Dolores Molina. His father was a primary grade school teacher from Paco, Manila and a retired Sergeant of the Spanish colonial army, while his mother was a primary grade school teacher in their hometown.Although both his parents must have contributed to his education, he received most of his primary education from the public school established by the Spanish government in his village, as part of the establishment of the free public education system in the Philippines, as he himself testified during his speech delivered in the House of Representatives of the United States during the discussion of Jones Bill, in 1914. ] He later boarded at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran where he completed secondary school. In 1898, his father Lucio and his brother Pedro were ambushed and killed by armed men while on their way home to Baler from Nueva Ecija. Some historians believe they were murdered by bandits who also robbed their money, while others believe the killings could have been related to their loyalty to the Spanish government. In 1899, Quezón cut short his law studies at the University of Santo Tomás in Manila to participate in the struggle for independence against the United States, led by Emilio Aguinaldo. During the Philippine-American War he was an ayuda-de-campo to Emilio Aguinaldo. He rose to the rank of Major and fought in......

...Ted’s Way May Not Be The Right Way Natalie J. Kopp Texas Wesleyan University BUA-3345-01 Professor Randy Lockhart November 1st, 2013 Ted Dorman is a family man with his head and heart in the right place; he is given an opportunity for professional growth as plant manager in a joint venture in Mexico facilitating the opening of SterMexicana. His counterpart, Manuel Angel Menendez Mata, a native Mexican, helps Ted settle in to this new workplace and town. The warm welcome is rather short lived due to social and cultural differences between Ted and Manuel. This case study demonstrates a lack of proper communication, sensitivity, and cultural understanding. Ted is a business-minded individual raised in a no nonsense, get to the point mentality which is prevalent among most Americans. The economic culture Ted has been immersed in is quite different in Mexico and he is oblivious to the need to adapt to his surroundings. While ignorance is not an excuse, it is a flaw that can serve as a learning tool to improve and correct behavior or mentalities that are not suitable in other parts of the world. As a result of these conflicts, a strained relationship develops between the two managers yet impacts more than just these two men. A ripple effect occurs causing stress in business relations with prospective clients, affects daily operations at the plant among workers, and ultimately stretches to affect the lives of wives and families. Countries across the globe accuse......

Manuel Noriega

...Manuel A. Noriega – Friend or Foe? Manuel Antonio Noriega Morena was born on February 11th, 1934 in Panama City, Panama to a poor accountant and his maid. (Tyle) At the age of five, his parents allowed a school teacher to adopt him. As a teen, he attended a well known high school, the National Institute, in preparation of becoming a doctor. During his time here, he participated in various anti-US protests. When high school was over, his family could not afford to send him to medical school so instead, Noriega accepted a scholarship to attend the Chorrios Military Academy in Peru. He graduated in 1962 with a degree in engineering. For the next few years, Noriega trained obstinately at the U.S. Army School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia becoming highly decorated in intelligence, counterintelligence, and jungle operations and then went on to take a course in psychological operations (Psyops) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1967, Noriega returned to Panama and joined the Panama National Guard. One year later, he was promoted to lieutenant. That same year, the leader of Panama, Amulfo Arias was removed from power by the military a short 11 days after winning his second election. Many speculate Noriega played a major part of this military uprising. Control of government power was assumed by Colonel Omar Torrijos. Torrijos already had a great deal of respect for Noriega but one incident sealed the deal. In 1969, Torrijos was out of the country, a group......
