Zuni Lucero and Simon Ortiz make compelling points in their papers. They talk about the differences in the two cultures. How they changed schools and saw both sides of their ever changing world at a young age. How being integrated into a white community changed them, and how they felt some what of an outsider going back to their native communities. Threw their writing they can elaborate and share these experiences to those of us who have only one culture to fit into. We all can relate to changing schools or even starting school for the first time. One who has never experienced this can only imagine being of a different culture, speaking a different language, looking differently and being the “new kid.” Lucero best describes this when she states, “Made conscious of the “otherness” of Indians, my world began to divide into a world of Us and Them.” Ortiz tells about her struggle in school to not speak a language he was accustoming to. “Children in school were punished and looked upon with disdain if they did not speak and learn English quickly and smoothly.” (30) He also uses the words “corporal punishment” and “ostracism” to describe the feeling, and possibly real, threats he lived with if he did not abide by the rules being forced on them. (30) This would be more than enough for any one to rebel, but he did not. One thing that stood out in his description of what he was enduring was the love he had for language. He states, “I loved language, the sound, meaning, and magic of language.” (30) Lucero connected with me she was telling about her adventure of seeing snow for the first time, and the different structures of the houses for what she was use to in her community. If one had not seen a paved road in their life, it would be a strange site. (30) The thought of what these people endured should enrage most of us. Think about our children being called…...

The Dean Scream

...The Dean Scream While attending the Alumni Lecture last week was the first that I have heard of both Jeb Bush and Howard Dean. I have been aware of the presidential campaigns in 2004 and many presidential actions taken by former president George W. Bush; but was still unaware of any substantial information from either Governor. After listening to the Alumni Lecture I only gained knowledge of viewpoints from questions that were asked from a small number of Northern Kentucky University students. I asked a classmate about Howard Dean and besides being the former governor of Vermont, what is Howard Dean known for? In response was “the Dean scream.” Howard Dean served as Vermont governor in the years 1991-2003 and then ran for democratic presidential nomination in 2004. Dean is eminent for the enthusiastic yelp or "scream" that he demonstrated at an Iowa speech during his campaign known as the Dean scream. Many believe the negative publicity received after “the Dean scream” that is was the ultimate reason to why Dean’s political campaign had lost, after he failed to win only the support of one state (Vermont) during the primaries (“Howard Dean”). In the beginning Dean was ahead in the polls and a victory look promising. What went wrong? Dean’s presidential campaign soared to exceed fundraising records for a Democratic presidential primary; and his campaign was widely known for its extensive outreached to voters through the internet which was a great key and leading......

Character Analysis of Dean Winchester

...20, 2013 Through the Eyes of Dean Winchester: On the Road and On the Hunt In my favorite TV show, Supernatural, one of the protagonists and my favorite character is Dean Winchester, a certainly very round character. The series begins in Lawrence, Kansas with the demonic death of Dean’s mother Mary. Consequently he, his brother Sam, and his father John are thrust into the world of the supernatural. John becomes obsessed with hunting the evil he encounters and ultimately tracking down the demon that killed Mary. As Dean grows, he learns more and more about hunting, weaponry, and the supernatural creatures that haunt this world. Due to circumstance, he is forced to grow up at an early age as he helps his father and fills the maternal role for Sam. Dean is such a standout and memorable character to me because of his never-failing selflessness, fierce protective nature, and emotionally complex mind. Throughout the show, it is easy to see how selfless Dean is. In his mind, family always comes first no matter the consequences or what may happen to him. Growing up moving from place to place with his hunter father and young brother, Dean learns family is all he has. He and his father had a militaristic relationship in that Dean did whatever he was told and never questioned anything or argued. He put aside any dreams or aspirations he may have had to stick with his dad and help him get revenge while also taking care of young Sam. As Dean and Sam begin to go on......

Jimmy Hoffa Movie

...This seemed to be true for a lot of truck drivers in these times. A job was a job and the workers did not want to risk it and lose everything. Jimmy Hoffa ended up telling people that Ciaro and him spoke in his truck about the Union and ended up resulting in Chiaro getting fired. This was interesting and ironic because unions were trying to be enforced so the workers could be protected but talk of them would result in companies firing pro-union workers. In order to get somewhere people had to risk losing jobs and reputations. Strike, boycotts and riots would eventually leave companies with no choice but to hire union workers. Since he lost his job over the union anyways, Ciaro decided to learn more about Hoffa and what his teamsters were all about. After Hoffa’s right hand man died doing a job for the teamsters, Chiaro took his place. The rest of the movie revolves around these two men trying to make truckers become unionized. They were highly effective. In this time the CIO was created. All of Hoffa’s work eventually led to contracts being formed by organizations for workers. Also in the 1930’s the Teamsters were defined as the most powerful union group in the country. All in all I believe that this was a great movie to portray what life was like for union workers and how, although companies were anti-union, the Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa were able to create a movement in order to get these workers contracts to work under and a better life at work....

Sam and Dean Winchester

...move with his father and older brother Dean learning to hunt supernatural beings. As Sam grew older he realized he no longer wanted to hunt the supernatural, he then moved on to Stanford University in hopes of becoming a lawyer and living a life away from “monsters”. While in Stanford, Sam meets his girlfriend Jessica, whom he had planned to marry. His plans were ruined when the same demon that killed Sam’s mother killed Jessica. Sam devastated, once again teamed up with his brother Dean, to hunt the demon that plagued his life. Dean Winchester Born on January 24, 1979 to Mary and John Winchester. When Dean was four his mother was killed by a demon known as “Yellow Eyes”. After the death of his mother, Dean’s father searched the world, hunting supernatural creatures, in hopes of finding the demon that killed Mary. While John hunted the supernatural, he believed it was safer to leave both Dean and his younger brother Sam in various motels away from the mysterious creatures. Since the brothers were often left unattended, Dean took the responsibility of protecting and caring for Sam. This feeling of the need to protect Sam from anything and everything has never left Dean. As Sam began to show resentment for the ruined unstable childhood his father had given him, Dean had viewed his father differently. Dean looked up to his father and when he was younger referred to John as “the coolest superhero that kills monsters!” Unlike Sam, Dean continued to hunt, and when Sam......

Jimmy Fallon Essay

...Santora 1 ! Stephen Santora Professor Van Aalst English 1A 25 March 2015 Late Night Thoughts Late-night talk shows combine pop culture, politics, and international news and present them in a facetious, lighthearted manner. Some of the subjects addressed are serious and solemn. It would seem impossible to discuss some of this material in a way not to offend or unnerve the audience but hosts such as Jimmy Fallon seem to do so with ease, and a loyal following. As the late-night talk show has changed over time so has the audience, grabbing the attention of viewers young and old alike. The Tonight Show appeals to different groups because of its ability to make light of issues that our culture faces and turns them into something that we can all laugh about together. The late-night talk show has made a name for itself in a sub-genre of its own, setting apart from the usual day time talk show. It is specifically known for its comedy oriented monologues and interviews. Characteristics of these programs include an opening monologue in which the host pokes fun of current events, comedy sketches, celebrity interviews, usually wrapped up by a musical performance by new and current artists. Unlike other interview shows, in late-night talk shows the host always sits behind a desk. This was a tradition started by the pioneers of the genre such as Johnny Carson who spent more than 30 years in his role as the host

Jimmy Carter

...In 1976 the Democratic Party chose Jimmy Carter as its nominee for president, and the American people elected him to that office over the incumbent president, Gerald Ford, bringing to a climax the most meteoric rise in modern U. S. politics. In choosing Jimmy Carter, the voters gained a president about whom they knew little and one who prided himself on being relatively unknown outside his home state of Georgia. He had never been a national candidate and had no significant experience on the national scene or any close ties to Washington. Jimmy Carter decided to run for president after his second term as governor of Georgia. (Goldfield, 2007, p.869) He sensed that the mood of the country was anti-Washington and that people were interested in a candidate who had not been associated with the Watergate scandal or with the Vietnam War. His campaign was built on moderate positions on most major issues, and he set a moral tone for the election by promising never to lie to the American people and to institute a government that was decent, compassionate, and responsible. In foreign affairs, Carter wanted to establish human rights as a tenet of American policy. (Jimmy Carter, n.d., ¶5) His frequent criticism of nations that violated basic human rights and his pleas in behalf of Soviet dissidents angered the Soviet government, which viewed the statements as intervention in its internal affairs. Despite these differences, Carter and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev signed......

Jimmy Carter

...Brooke Redington Dr. Larry Underberg UI 320- 01 5 April 2016 The Era of Bad Judgement America has had forty-four presidents since the creation of office in 1789. Each of the forty-four presidents has left both negative and positive marks on the office. Some presidents, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, are known for their great leadership and wonderful policies. Others, like Richard Nixon, may never recover from their time in the Oval office. Most Americans feel as if the biggest presidential mistakes were made during the time of the Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter administrations. Nixon cheated during his political campaign, Ford only defended Nixon and let the economy drown, and Carter was too much of a nice guy. The twelve year span of these three presidents nearly broke America. However is this completely their fault, or did they each inherit an already broken America? When Richard Nixon took office in 1969, America was in a time of change. The American people started demanding rights such as ending the draft, women’s rights, and African-American rights. Nixon was quick to realize this and honed in on ways to give the people what they wanted. In the year of 1972, Nixon was granted permission to visit the People’s Republic of China, which opened the closed diplomatic relations between the two countries. Also, in the same year Nixon initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. Nixon was not done there, in 1973 he was able...

Jimmy Swaggart

...Jimmy Swaggart: Saint or Sinner? By: Candace Westcott Jimmy Lee Swaggart is a well known television evangelist, he has been working in the ministry since the 1950's. He is a man who brought himself from the depths of poverty and established a ministry worth millions of dollars. If this was all one knew about the man it would seem as though he was most definitely a saint, but there is more! Swaggart's ministry was rocked by not one but two sex scandals. But before we get to this saints transformation to sinner, let us first example his life leading up to this scandal. Jimmy Lee Swaggart was born in Louisiana on March 15th, 1935 to parents Minnie and Willie. Jimmy was not born into wealth although he ended up having two very famous cousins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. Jimmy was inspired to preach the gospel from a very young age, he attended church all of his childhood along with his parents. He felt compelled to begin to preaching at the early age of 9. Jimmy was married by the time he was only 18 years old and had his first child shortly after that time. This was not uncommon back in the 1950's, getting married and having children at a young age was what everyone did. Swaggart struggled to support his family while working many odd jobs on the side of his preaching. He preached in several different areas of his home state, Louisiana. Although his family was struggling financially Swaggart believed he was living up to his calling and preaching the word of......
