...Industry Art It was a time of assembly lines and factories, booming population and industrialism, it was the 20th century and it was building speed. As the suburban American family turned the doorknob to their brand new, mass-produced, Levittown house they were clueless to the impact that their Model- T Ford would summon on the new modern art era. Hundreds of artists filled the modern era, but Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol and Banksy were among the few who were influenced by the new industrial world to change the face of art. In 1887, Marcel Duchamp was born to an artistic family in France. At age sixteen, he desired to be a painter (Stafford). Duchamp was introduced to the Dada art movement that sprung up in 1914. Leadership, bourgeois culture and support of war disgusted the Dadaists and they eliminated the act of labeling art (The Art Story Foundation). So Duchamp moved to New York in 1915 to begin production on his new readymade art. He took everyday objects, a bicycle wheel or snow shovel, put it in a gallery and let the consumer deem it art. The most notorious work of Duchamp, and considered the most influential piece of modern art (Higgins), a urinal turned on its back and renamed Fountain shown at an exhibition for the Society of Independent Artists in 1917 (The Art Story Foundation). ...Graffiti can be defined as writings or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed onto a wall or other surface. It commonly appears on the sides of buildings, both public and private. There has always been an ongoing debate about whether graffiti is art or just a form of vandalism. Often it is store owners and the owners of establishments who critiscize this form of expression because it is on their property that graffiti appears. Graffiti is most prominent in urban environments, in cities like New York and Los Angeles. People living in big cities often come into contact with graffiti whether it is on the train or simply walking down the street. Because of this most passer-by have grown used to its presence and barely even notice it. So why is it that some so strongly object against graffiti while otherwise recognize it as a cultural icon? One of the biggest distinctions to be made between art and graffiti is that art is sanctioned by the property owner whilst graffiti is done illegally. That is why two pieces that can be both classified as works of graffiti can illicit entirely different reactions. Within the brain, humans have two lobes, one controlling the left side of the body, the right lobe, which is considered to be the logic side, and one controlling the right side of the body, the left lobe, which is considered to be the creative side. With that being said, everyone has a creative side. Regardless of the ability to express creativity, everyone is influenced by it. It gave me a big shock after watching the video because that man actually sneaked in to the US military airbase and tagged the Air force One aircraft. The event was being broadcast on some major TV channels. Artists have been provoked by worldly experiences during their time thus producing artwork that reflects their personal social and political concerns. Through these artworks they are able to influence their audiences. The ability to revolutionise ideas is the only change in the world that is constant; this is where a true artist takes action. Johann Joseph Eugene Von Guérard (1812-1901) was an Austrian born artist. His father took him to Italy in 1826 after he displayed extraordinary artistic talent, here he was able to pursue art as a lifestyle. Guérard travelled around the world from Dusseldorf to England, from England to Ballarat composing many landscape paintings and pencil sketches. In 1854, Guérard married Louise Arnz of Dusseldorf. For 16 years Eugene travelled throughout Australia and New Zealand before returning to Dusseldorf where Guérard died. When Eugene went to Dusseldorf he studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art one of the leading art schools in Europe. Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, a landscape artist, taught Guérard at the Academy. Schirmer encouraged his student’s to paint directly from nature; this is what sparked many of Eugene’s artworks. The Romantic movement arised during the 19th century, the emotions that overpowered order influences literature and art; including Guérard’s paintings. Many view the action of graffiti to be the work of a criminal while others view it as the work of an artist. Vandalism, the destruction of property, is the category that graffiti falls under in many countries. It is understandable that posting graffiti on a private small business is a criminal act. However, graffiti can and should be viewed as a form of art no matter the location. Many art museums have graffiti style pieces, which further reinforces the argument for graffiti being viewed as a work of an artists rather than a vandal. At the end of the day, graffiti is an antisocial (not accepted as a valid form of social expression) form of art. Modern graffiti originated in the 1960s and was used by teenagers as a form of expression; it eventually metastasized into a majority of urban environments and eventually found its way into art museums internationally (Whitehead, 26). However, as the popularity of graffiti grew, law enforcement began to view it as the work of criminal vandals and legislation was passed in an attempt to halt it.
