9.1. Judging from the seismogram in Figure 9.4 of the lab book, which wave appears to be the most damaging? The surface wave looks like it could be the most damaging.

9.3. Determine the distance to an earthquake at a station that receives P and S waves 5.0 minutes apart. Refer to the Figures 9.4 and 9.5, reproduced below. Hint: (a) Place tick marks on a scrap of paper equal to 5.0 on the minutes axis. (b) Fit that to the horizontal separation between P and S curves. (c) Read distance directly across on the distance axis. The distance at 5,800 of an earthquake with a station receives the P and S waves 5.0 minutes apart.

...When I initially decided to take this geology course it was just to take a science class online that fit with my work schedule Now that I’m about to complete the semester I am ready to show just how much I learned. Sedimentary landforms are created by tiny particles of earth. These particles can be anything from stone to glass or tile. These particles are caused by weathering which is described as any natural force that breaks rocks into smaller pieces. The particles get washed away by rain, wind and water and eventually are deposited at the basin of rivers, lakes and oceans. When one layer solidifies another begins. This is known as deposition, one key factor is that these particles begin to settle so that the heavier pieces settle first and they settle deep. The smaller particles then build on top of them. After all of the deposition is done erosion takes place. During this process the rocks are weathered again. Then these particles undergo the lithification process by changing into rocks by compaction and cementation. The mineralogy of sedimentary rocks is made up of grains and cement. The clastic rocks were physically transported by wind, water, glaciers or gravity. When these rocks can no longer be moved they are deposited in either a high energy environment or a low energy environment. High energy environments include; storm dominated beaches, landslides and places were tsunamis occur. Low energy environments include lagoons, deep oceans, and deep lakes. Textures......

...Physical Geology: Term Paper The break that now separates the Ouachita Mountains from the Appalachians, a feature known as the Mississippi Embayment, constitutes one of the largest and least understood landforms of the central U.S. In the article, “The Mississippi’s Curious Origins” the authors, Roy B. Van Arsdale and Randel T. Cox shed light on the mysterious Mississippi Embayment. They begin by explaining the origins of the horseshoe-shaped lowland that is underlain by massive quantities of sand, silt and mud deposits. They begin at what geologist call Pangea, which is when North America, South America, Africa and Eurasia came together to form one supercontinent. This collision raised several mountain ranges, including the Ouachita-Appalachian. Pangea is said to be ripped apart where it had previously been sutured together: just outside the arc of the Ouachita-Appalachian Mountains. This opening formed both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This article then states that for a long period of time the Gulf Coast remained geologically stable, with no continents plowing into it or rifting away. The northern coast of the Gulf Coast began to warp upward over a large area; this is the footprint of what is now the Mississippi Embayment. Diamonds are classified as minerals. They contain a crystalline structure and are a solid. Wood is not a mineral due to chemical composition and organic materials. The JOIDES Resolution (Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling) is a scientific drilling ship. The JOIDES Resolution was the successor of Glomar Challenger. Both vessels would drill and take core samples at specific locations. A central component of those simple concepts is known as the Wilson Cycle. The Wilson Cycle has a massive impact on not only the two sites that we visited, but literally everywhere around the world.
