Food photography is a still life specialization of commercial photography, aimed at producing attractive photographs of food for use in advertisements, packaging, menus or cookbooks. Professional food photography is a collaborative effort, usually involving an art director, a photographer, a food stylist, a prop stylist and their assistants.

Changing trends
For a long time, food photographs tended to be shot and composed the way people were used to encountering their food: laid out on a table setting and shot from an overhead perspective, i.e., from the point of view of the eater. Stylists accordingly arranged the food to appear good from above, with the items arranged flat on the plate and clearly separated from each other.
Later, romantic lighting, shallower angles and more props came en vogue, with extreme cases leading to the term "food porn". Most recently, the prevailing trend in Western commercial food photography is to present the food as simple, clean and naturally as possible and with little props, often using effects such as selective focus, tilted plates, and extreme close-ups. This complements trends in professional cooking to make the food more visually interesting. For instance, the height of dishes tends to increase and their elements are often layered, which lends itself well to narrow-angled shots.

The role of the food stylist is to make the food look attractive in the finished photograph. The main difference between how a home cook or chef may present food and what a stylist does is the time and effort a stylist takes to carefully and artfully arrange the food. The first thing that may pop into your head when you think food photography is just setting up different foods and just snapping a couple shots and that’s it. Along with capturing that perfect photo from the photographer there is also a food stylist and a prop stylist to help bring out the different characteristics and textures of the food item being photographed. The way food is set out on the plate is just as important as the way it should be photographed. Food doesn’t keep its appetizing looks for long so as a photographer you’ll need to be well prepared and able to shoot quickly after it’s been cooked before it melts, collapses, wilts and/or changes color. When capturing your photographs you should be thinking on how you can not only capture a two dimensional picture but on how your two dimensional picture will capture the eye of whomever may possibly be looking at it. A photo essay, compiled by the English department at the University of Illinois, contains a number of photographs from the Holocaust that demonstrates the atrocities that occurred during this time. These photographs support the argument developed by Susan Sontag that photographers must make the decision between a photograph and a life, and that the viewers of these images also have a responsibility to actions of atrocity and human suffering. In Susan Sontag’s book On Photography, she develops the argument that photography is an act of nonintervention; that the photographer is faced with the choice between capturing a photograph of atrocity and putting an effort to stop the atrocity. Sontag brings up an interesting point that you cannot have it both way, you either capture the photo or intervene whatever atrocity may be beyond the lens of the camera. It is in this sense that photographer is faced with a ethical and moral decision, and it causes us to question the responsibility of those of us who are faced with atrocity or human suffering, whether we be photographers, or not.
