Compare/Contrast Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” with Aung San Suu Kyi’s excerpts “From In Quest of Democracy.”
The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. is known in today’s society as peaceful civil rights leader. In 1957, he led a boycott against the city’s bus lines due to the segregation laws. The result of this boycott was the desegregation of the bus line. That boycott was a non-violent protest in which the blacks within that city refused to ride the bus until change was made.
King’s group held seminar’s teaching nonviolence starting out by saying “Are you able to accept blows without retaliating?” “Are you able to endure the ordeals of jail?” (205 RTW) Reverend King was well versed in philosophy and practiced nonviolent civil disobedience, so much so that when a judge ordered an unconstitutional injunction forbidding King and others from protesting, he defied them and was arrested and jailed. While in jail he wrote “Letter from Birmingham City Jail”, he was unable to send it out himself so he had it smuggled out of the jail. His letter was an eloquently written letter using examples from our past to show that it is not nonviolent protests that should be illegal but those actions of the ones in charge of law and order who us abuse their power by beating, spraying hoses, and arresting the peaceful protesters trying to make positive change in our country. His letter explains that as a man of God he doesn’t understand the white clergy of the city not backing him, explaining the four basic steps of nonviolent protests which are collecting the facts, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action. He continues by saying that the need for direct action, boycotting the bus lines for instance, that it is necessary because the city refuses to uphold the law and desegregate, the city refuses to negotiate. I called her Primary care physician and was informed that he didn’t practice that kind of medicine so he wouldn’t be able to help . She needed the specialized help of a gynegologist. Overwhelmingly, I am faced with the inauspicious task of getting the woman who had raised me, my Mommy, seen by the best and brightest doctors in this field. I asked the PCP if he could refer someone, and he said I needed to contact her HMO. Upon contacting her HMO I was given a list of 3-4 doctors to try, all of which turned me down saying that they either no longer accepted her insurance or she was too old and they couldn’t treat her. When I went back to the HMO I got another short list to try and got the same results. For every 1 productive call to the HMO I had 3-4 “run- around” calls which were very non-productive and granted me no assistance. I cried many times, due to the fact that as I received NO help Mommy was getting worse. I finally took matters into my own hands and went online and was able to find a list of specialty doctors for her HMO. It was my goal every day to call at least 10 doctors. After a few days of calling, crying and lots of praying I found a doctor that accepted her insurance and would see her no matter her age. Essay, “How To Decorate Your Room When You’re Broke,” there is in account of various ways on how to decorate a room, for oneself, and for others too, often on a daily basis. Piven organizes his essay by sub-titles, each one concerning a specific way to decorate, and each sub-title is accompanied by directions to serve as an example for that particular decorations. Piven concludes that the three ways you can decorate your room/space is by using objects that you already have. Piven uses directions to lay out how to accomplish some simple decorating tasks. With the milk crate chair he describes in simple instructions that a milk crate needs to be flipped over and placing a single layer of sponges on top of the crate and then placing a mat or sheet on top and securing it down to make a chair to use, but I think the milk crate can be made into a bookcase or anything else that anyone can set their minds to. The t-shirt curtains is a fun and creative idea to turn your old t-shirts into a curtain to cover up a window inside your bedroom or dorm room. The instructions on how to make the curtain is simple, Piven describes these instructions by saying, “take some old t-shirts and cut the design off of the shirts and sow them together and then attach a rod onto the curtain and hang the curtain up” (Piven).
