Recognition Essay As highlighted in the book “Making Their Day! Employee Recognition That Works,” employee recognition is an often mismanaged part of many managers to employee relationships. As a manager for over ten years, I have had the privilege of being on both ends of the recognition exchange. As an employee, I have the great opportunity to be awarded numerous promotions and bonuses because of my performance, but these acts of recognition by my employers felt more process driven or driven by business needs. Although these promotions and bonuses were greatly appreciated, they left much to be desired in recognizing the value of my contribution to the organization, this level of appreciation was found in more simple acts of recognition, ones which were more personal and intentional.

One specific example of this type of recognition actually came during a time in our company that was uncertain and unsettling. During this time, my employer was concerned about losing top and critical talent. As part of the efforts to retain this talent, the company offered a substantial monetary bonus to certain employees to remain with the company during this time of uncertainty. As a leader of a critical department, I was selected as person to receive this bonus. However, the bonus itself was not the recognition that left an impression with me; the real recognition was in the method of which I was informed of my selection to receive the bonus. Prior to receiving the standard form letter notifying me of my incentive structure, I received a personal phone call from the CEO, during which he clearly stated how valued my team and my contribution were to the company, and that I had personally helped shaped the company into a successful organization over the past few years. Companies put time and money into training a person and most are more than willing to give them a fair chance to improve their work quality. But there are situations when an employee refuses to or is unable to comply and termination must take place. In my experience I have found that certain steps need to be taken to properly and legally terminate. 1. Retrain Take the time to retrain an employee. Some people are quicker at learning and others not. Retraining will often solve the problem. 2. Consult Consulting with the employee is important communication; find out where he or she needs help with to improve. 3. Verbal warning Employee has been retrained and consulted but still doesn’t comply, a verbal warning must now take place and be correctly documented. 4. First written warning Repetitive noncompliance has profound impacts on a work environment, for other staff members as well the production of the business. The employee is now on probation. He or she has one more chance to correct the problem with guidance from superiors. 5. Second written warning This is the last warning before termination takes place. They are considered separate from salary but may be monetary in nature or otherwise have a cost to the company. A reward system consists of financial rewards (fixed and variable pay) and employee benefits, which together comprise total remuneration. The system also incorporates non financial rewards (recognition, praise, achievement, responsibility and personal growth) and, in many cases, performance management processes. Employee satisfaction is of utmost importance for the chamber and the membership, because it is the foundation of success. The benefit of having a melting pot of new and prior employees is that it allows the chamber to focus on building the team. With change comes resistance this resistance is reason for improvement.
