1. What internal control procedures would you recommend to remedy the control deficiencies related to tuition receipt and refund procedures?

Firstly, I would recommend actions geared towards safeguarding the college’s assets, as well designed internal controls protect assets from accidental loss or loss from fraud (especially as it regards to the acquisition of tuition receipts and the ensuing disbursement of funds). Secondly, the reliability and integrity of financial information garnered by the FSD, and the information held by the different schools of the college must be ensured. Management must have accurate, timely and complete information, including accounting records, in order to plan, monitor and report business operations. Additionally, compliance is a key component to this process. Sanchou College must be in compliance with the many federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the operations of their business actions. Lastly, it is my recommendation that the college seek to promote efficient and effective operations. This will provide an environment in which managers and staff can maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.

2. How does the tone set up by top management influence the effectiveness of internal control?

The tone set by top management- the corporate environment or culture within which financial reporting occurs- is the most important factor contributing to the integrity of the financial reporting process and the subsequent fiscal environment at Sanchou College. Monitored operations, clear set goals and objectives, adhering to proper protocol and the promotion of reliability and integrity all positively influence the effective internal control.

City of Dixon Embezzlement

...Auditing Research Paper City of Dixon Embezzlement 11/6/2012 ACC 235 Growing up in a small town, Rita Crundwell spent most of her life very close to the town of Dixon. She was from a well brought up, hard working family and was one of six children. Her family was very interested in horses and would participate in horse shows while the children were growing up. Rita was an honors student while in high school, landing in the top 20 out of 300 students who were in the National Honors Society (Smith, 2012). Although she graduated high school, Rita did not continue her education. The reason being that while in high school, she landed a part-time job at City Hall. Darlene Herzog, who was Dixon’s comptroller at the time, convinced Rita to stay with City Hall because she caught onto everything so quickly and was a great asset to the team. Through her hard work, Rita was able to advance herself, moving from secretary and then to treasurer. After 12 years of working with City Hall, in 1983, she replaced Darlene Herzog, who had to retire due to health problems. This placed Rita at the top of the financial department of City Hall, being named both the treasurer and the comptroller. It was the start of what would eventually lead her to be taken out of her office in handcuffs almost 30 years later. Dixon is a small town in the northern part of Illinois. It has a population of nearly 16,000 and was never rolling around in the excess money the town owned. In......

...Why college education is important to me Kimberly Morgan April 18, 2013 Ashworth College The value of a college education can be taken in all different kinds of aspects. I can lose all my fame and fortune but if I have a college education, it remains the same. In my prospective, a college education has to be valued. So many ask why education is so important. AdultLearn.com states that "In a technological society where jobs and careers are attached to pieces of paper distributed to deserving people by college administrators, that question seems like a no-brainer.” (AdultLearn.com, 2013) College is a goal of mine that I am going to achieve. When attending college you have to truly be a levelheaded person and stay on track to get good grades. Education is the most important asset that you can have or achieve. Being that college has its many expenses, I look at it as if I am buying a house. You have to be positive when looking at what all you have to put in when attending school. Getting a college degree takes a lot of hard work and many long hours. Going to school is not as easy as it seems. Putting a value on your college education means good study habits. That is only one of the factors of valuing your education. Higher education is essential today and to the future students of all ages. Education is very important in order to help level the playing field so individuals will have more opportunities in life. I believe that education helps to break down barriers......

...and far between, complicating efforts to control both cost (what institutions spend) and price (what colleges charge students). And that makes the initiative launched by Virginia's Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, an oversight agency that evaluates other state agencies and programs, interesting. Over the next two years, the commission, at the request of state lawmakers, plans to analyze in depth how expenses at the state's public universities have changed over the past few decades, an endeavor that could result in new ways to control costs and prices, both in the state and nationwide. And the commission's first report, released this month, hints at one area that will be explored in depth in subsequent reports -- auxiliary services, including housing, dining and intercollegiate athletics. “During the last decade, total spending per student (accounting for inflation) increased about 2 percent at Virginia’s six research institutions, and about 11 percent at Virginia’s other nine institutions,” the report states. “Spending on auxiliary enterprises funded by students was the largest driver of these spending increases. Auxiliary enterprise spending per student, after inflation, increased $821 at Virginia’s six research institutions and $906 at the other nine non-research institutions.” That finding has the potential to play into an oft-repeated narrative about colleges spending their money on nonessential facilities and services -- climbing walls, lazy rivers and......

...Why College: Why college, why go to college? I feel that is one of the most asked question amongst college students, whether it’s talking about, why they choose the college they choose, or why go all together, it’s asked. I for one ask myself that sometimes throughout the school year; it’s almost a reminder of why I am in enrolled in college today. I’m attending St Cloud State University as a freshman to get my masters in Elementary Education to become a first grade teacher. I chose this school because I knew someone who went into the education program and didn’t have a bad thing to say about it. In order for me to achieve the goal of becoming a teacher I have to go to four year college. Without any type of degree the most I could become would be working at daycare/preschool making on average of eight dollars an hour which would have me fall along the lines of US Census Bureau stating that if you have an high school diploma on average you will make $1,936 per month verse if you attend college an receive your bachelor’s degree you can make an average of $3,804 per month. With teaching your overall salary depends on your degree and how many years you have been teaching. If I just get my bachelor’s degree and I’m in the first step I can make on average $47,379 a year and if I get my master I can make on average of $50,076 per year. With that if I continue to get my Ph.D or Ed.D I can receive an extra $2,000 dollars to yearly salary. Along with the salary increasing over the......

...College “college” what easily come up to your mind when we hear this word there are so many neither things nor questions coming up to my mind. Questions that I do want to know the answers. When I reached one of the best things in my life being a teenager, I saw the best things in my life being a teenager, I saw that everything has changed. All are interesting and exciting to explore. There are several stages in tertiary level, first year or what we called freshmen, second year/sophomore third year/junior and the last one, fourth year or being a senior. I experience being a first year student and it was amazing, this time I am out the stage of second year level. I discovered a lot of things handsome boys pretty girls that I want to mingle with, kind of teachers and a wee known school, Lyceum of the Philippines University of Batangas (LPU-B) , but it’s not all I’d discover; the word “college “means a lot to every teenager like me. It’s funny to think that when you’re a teenager life is going on and on with every steps that you take in that journey, You might find yourself having close friend true friends best friends, whatever a person calls it. For an unexpected reason, you develop the strong love and bonding to each other, treating everyone as your one sister or your own brother. Although there are so many laughers to each of you, there might be hidden heart feelings because of some struggled words that you gave to your friends. But now, it’s already done with a smile in......

... The Cost of College In today’s society college education is needed to achieve a successful career. Jobs have become increasingly difficult to get without a college degree. I think that college education is getting costly especially in today’s economy. Although, I believe that people should go to college and comprehend the importance of higher learning, and to have access to higher social and economic class. “Therefore, one issue that most of college students face when getting a college education are tuitions bill and years of debt. As a consequence a higher percentage of dropout students that is increasing date to date.” (Eduardo Porter) After I graduate high school I had struggled for money to pay for college which I think it is very hard once you are used to free education all your life. Thereof, paying so much money for a higher education is bringing the number down of students who are earning a degree, and is declining over the years. I believe that it is much easier for `students who come from an wealthy family that have opportunity to enroll in college right out of high school because they can afford it. However for students in a lower income family like me tuition rates make that near impossible. I believe that if high schools refocus on training students for jobs that lead directly to apprenticeships it could lead the student to a well-paying employment that increase income to be able to afford college cost . I have been......

...A college education opens doors for many opportunities for those who pursue one. Obtaining a college education is not an easy feat, especially if it is postponed until after you have a spouse, children and a full time job. We as parents need to realize the positive influence we can have on our children’s future plans and pursuits. Most parents want the best for their children; they want to see them succeed in life. One way to help ensure their success is by influencing their decision to pursue a college education when there is less distractions in their life, which is right after high school. If our children choose not to attend college after high school, life might become so occupied with other things it may postpone or prevent our children from obtaining a college degree. Speaking as a parent who first entered the work force and started a family, I understand how difficult it is attending college in the midst of raising a family. The stress is real, and the pressure is felt by all, when a working mother or father begins to obtain a college education. Granted, there are benefits to taking a year off after high school in order to regroup and relax, but the risk of not returning is highly possibly. Attending college right out of high school is the preferable option, and we as parents should encourage our children to make this most sensible choice. College conversations with our children should start early. Many parents begin to discuss college with their......

...Why Physical Education Should Not Be Mandatory in College I firmly believe that gym class should not be a mandatory part of a college schedule.   Simply put, I think this in large part due to the fact that other venues and activities exist for the opportunity to get oneself in shape, as well as the point that why should a student be made to take a class when he is paying a lot of money out of his or her own pocket for their tuition?   He or she should be given their own choice when it comes to taking a physical education course of any kind.   While the opportunity to take the class should remain, the choice to make such a class mandatory is imprudent and arbitrary, at best. If someone wishes to get themselves in shape, they can find the time to go to a gym, or find the time to run a track.   As busy as a student’s life is, it is not so busy that some time cannot be put aside for their own health and physical well being.   In fact, this should be one of a student’s most important priorities, and should not be difficult to pencil into a schedule.   There are many ways outside of class that a student can get exercise.   They could walk, run, swim, work out, play any variety of sports; the list can be unending.   In short, activity can be done so it is both healthy and something a student wants to do.   So why implement it as a mandatory activity that some students would not want to participate in?   Some may feel that they already get enough exercise as it is: there would be no...

Staff Auditor Embezzlement at a Small Client

...Maxwell and Company: Staff Auditor Embezzlement at a Small Client 1. Anna Thomas committed a fraudulent act by making personal charges and cash withdrawals on Rusher Automotive’s credit card. The accounting profession believes there are three conditions necessary for fraudulent behavior. (See Statement on Auditing Standards No. 99, Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit. For additional explanation, you may want to review Buckhoff [2001].) a. List the three elements and discuss how each of these elements is present in Anna Thomas’ fraud at Rusher Automotive. The three elements of fraudulent behavior are pressure, opportunity and rationalization, all of which were present in Anna Thomas’ fraud at Rusher Automotive. Pressure stemmed from debt obligations, family responsibilities, and a self-created image responsibility related to being known as a professional accountant. The element of opportunity stemmed from the fact that she was the only staff accountant assigned to Rusher Automotive, performing several accounting functions that were not reviewed by either Allen Rusher or Jerry Maxwell; i.e. no segregation of duties or checks and balances. In regards to rationalization, it would seem that Anna rationalized her behavior in several ways. First, she felt that she “rightfully deserved” respect for being a public accountant, meaning that she potentially believed she was above those in the community and therefore entitled to living a life of luxury. Next,......

Civil and Criminal Penalties for Embezzlement

...Embezzlement is a serious crime that carries penalties in both the civil and criminal court systems. When you embezzle money or property from a company, you should know that you are taking serious risks. Essentially, embezzlement occurs when a person or persons in a company receive money or property because they've been given a certain degree of trust. As you can tell, the law is quite vague on this particular crime. As with many criminal offenses, the civil penalties are just as stiff as the criminal ones, though you cannot be given jail time at the ruling of a civil court judge. In most cases, offenders face criminal charges first, then move on to civil court afterward so that the company can reclaim what it lost. In other words, you'll likely be in jail with no money for the commissary. When you commit the crime of embezzlement, the strongest evidence against you will likely be a paper trail that leads directly from you to the missing money or assets. This often occurs because the person charged is the only individual with access to the funds, and thus becomes the prime suspect by the process of elimination. If no one else could have done it, in other words, you're the guilty party. In the criminal court system, the penalties for embezzlement usually include a jail sentence and a fine, both of which can be substantial. The United States Code, Title 18, deals with all forms of embezzlement, of which there are many. The sentence you receive will depend on the nature......

... This is regarding an embezzlement case that was brought to my attention.   Options for the company: “The investigation of a white-collar crime like embezzlement is difficult due to a lack of physical evidence. Accusations of embezzlement do not take place after a violent act and proof of wrongdoing requires extensive research. You need to take the right approach in order to legally investigate and prove embezzlement.” (eHow Contributor, 2012) There could be a number of options for the company to take for the embezzlement case. I would recommend them to hold back and get as much information as possible before the confront anyone. This way they have a stronger case, if they question anyone right away then the embezzler has a chance to get rid of any kind of any evidence that would destory him at a trial. Paying attention to all the telephone, company emails, and all the internal records will help with determine if he has been embezzling from the company. By looking at the call log can determine who would be helping him. By having someone call the hotline and giving very important information helps stop this kind of crimes. Having the right people working the hotline and asking the right types of questions makes the investigation go smoothly. Steps for the Interview: There are a few steps that need to be done before anyone can start interviewing. You will want to gather as much evidence as possible to have a stronger case. Embezzlement is something that is......

...College is like being in the middle of the jungle with only a basic box of tools and a lower knowledge of the habitat. College is unlike high school in many ways. The new student does not feel confident of what is going to happen next. She or he is limited to a new environment that is displayed before her or he, also the student remains unsure about how to act and react toward these new experiences. The ex high school students are now adults but they feel like they have yet to become one. The only thing they can do is to feel the fear of getting lost among the buildings and classes, the panic of being devoured by a predator that is the teacher. The thought of not being able to survive through the next exam is stressful. The freshmen remember their high school, the past years they have gone in the same place. Students have memorized the entire area and they know how get from one point to another, but in college with the big buildings and with many rooms, it is easy to find themselves lost between one building and another. Some buildings are connected and some are not, but scholars need to find a way to move among classes. The confusing layouts of the classes make getting lost or arriving to the classes late very easy to do. The new students need to use the map for have guide their own, or sometimes they go with the counselor or advisor for have a better idea of how to move between the college. On occasion the student gets so lost that she or he will enter the wrong class.......
