Learning Team Deliverable
As future business managers or entrepreneurs, the classification and types of marketstructure, upsurge the team’s interest. Thus, this week’s team deliverable focuses on pure monopoly, monopolistic competitive markets, oligopoly, and pure competition. In economics, market structure refers to the number of firms producing identical products or services.
In a pure monopoly there is only one! The team pinpointed some key terms that helped us differentiate this type of market from the other three structures. A“single seller” monopoly is one where a single firm is the sole producer of a good or service. A “no close substitutes” is a company that sales a product and there is nothing in the market the can be used as a substitute, therefore everyone have only one place to go to buy the produce. The “price maker” is when a firm has control over the quantity supplied; consequently they will have control over the price of the product they are producing. The “blocked entry” limits competitors from entering a market due to certain barriers such as economic or legal, things such as patents or licenses (McConnell, Brue & Flynn, 2009).A monopoly exists when there is only one supplier of a good, with no close substitutes; the smaller the number of firm in this industry, and the larger those firms are, the more power that exists in that industry around control and prices. As a result, the greater the market share the more power the firm will have over the industry.Today, a few examples of monopolies are Microsoft, Wal-Mart, and the United States Postal Service (Simpson,…...

Team Learning Week 3

...During this second week of class, Learning Team B learned about the importance and understanding of work teams. If anyone has worked in corporate America, teams are likely to be incorporated into that organizational culture. For example, Aflac has several teams based on divisions and departments. Most employees within a team report directly to a supervisor, a manager, or a senior manager and those senior managers report to individuals that makeup the executive team. We can easily relate to teams at work and at most schools, like the University of Phoenix, which helps to mold how we interact with others that may have different opinions or views. It is up to us to learn how to function within a team to reach a common goal which could be an important project, presentation or a report. This week’s objectives also discusses the four types of teams which are: problem-solving teams, self-managed work teams, cross-functional teams and virtual teams (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Regardless of which type of team we are working on some common factors are ensuring the team operates effectively, and having a certain level of trust is a good place to start. In regards to developing effective teams, Adam again referenced his military experience. He was put in charge of small groups as early as 19 years old in a combat environment and was expected to bring them together. He drew from the methods of his superiors and built cohesion through tough training and through leading by......

Week 3 Eco 561

...Cynthia-Week three provided us with information on market structure. According to "Businessdictionary"(n.d.), “The interconnected characteristics of a market, such as the number and relative strength of buyers and sellers and degree of collusion among them, level and forms of competition, extent of product differentiation, and ease of entry into and exit from the market”, with the four basic structures being Pure monopoly, perfect competition, oligopoly, and monopolistic competition. The key learning objectives for the week showed us what pricing strategies to meet goals, such as competition strategies or loss leader where the company cuts the price of items to get customers to shop more. It also showed us way companies can create non price barriers based on market structure like loyalty cards and branding of products. Price-quality and features are ways to increase product differentiation based on market structure, and energy cost to vendor ownership are ways to reduce costs for an organization. The most comprehendible concept of the week was the four basic market structures. Monopoly is the easiest of the concepts to comprehend because most companies in the US are a part of the monopolistic competition. Most of the products we consume are produced and sold by a large amount of producers and purchased by a large amount of consumers. Take the chip industry for example; there are variations of cheese nacho chips by a large number of companies. Doritos, Great Value......

...Learning Team Reflection Marlon Bailey, Timothy Granger, Nadia Martinez, and Sherie Ralston MGT 598 August 3, 2015 Dr. James Bottorff Learning Team Reflection During Week, Three Learning Team B will discuss this week’s objectives with our team. This paper will explain the topics we feel comfortable with, any topics the team members struggles with, and how the weekly topics relate to application in each of our fields. Steeple The topic Sherie struggled with was Steeple. “To take a closer look at the business system and ‘bigger picture' factors in which the business operates; it is useful to use a technique like the STEEPLE analysis. STEEPLE, like SWOT, is an acronym. It stands for ‘social (demographic), technological, economic, environmental (natural), political, legal and ethical’ factors” (Wickham & Wickham, 2008, p. 129). Sherie was unaware of how effective these tools are to help organizations monitor changes that take place in the environment of the organization. She learned that these tools played a significant role for any organization regardless of their products, services, and their industry. Balanced Scorecard After reading the paper by Kaplan and Norton, Timothy discovered through other readings that they are somewhat the basis for using the balanced scorecard system. Although at first it seemed a little foreign to him, he discovered that most companies only take the tangible items that are backed with a financial gain to assess the corporation's...

The first topic dealt with fixed and variable costs and how these costs related to supply and demand. Fixed costs are costs that will not vary regardless of the changing outputs and paid out even if the outputs are zero. On the other hand, variable costs are the cost that will vary based on the levels of outputs produced by the business and those costs changes directly with the level of outputs. Items such as raw materials and most labor cost are variable because they can change over time (McConnell, Brue & Flynn, 2009). Understanding both the fixed cost and the variable cost would help business get a better handle on the total cost associated with operating a business. In business economics, cost and knowing the effecting controllers, allows managers to adjust accordingly. Businesses overall, need to know where money is going, when and where they need to cut expenses, and when they need to produce more to offset the cost. As the demand for a product or service increase, the company would need to understand when it should increase its supply for that product or service. It seems simple, but there is much more that goes into......
