! “The Most Dangerous Game”: Discovering the Definition of Humanity Society defines a human to be a civilized being: having appropriate clothing, manners, and many other things that the Europeans thought were necessary for a cultivated person. Everybody else that didn’t fit the description was a savage or someone treated as a dog. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell, Rainsford, a well educated and experienced hunter, falls off his yacht and swims to an island where a man hunts people for sport. Through the use of imagery, irony, and suspense, Connell explores the idea that being humane is more than just having civilized behavior. Imagery allows the reader to get a feel what Rainsford went through while on the evil feeling island. At first the general appears to be a very civilized and dignified man with items such as “a gold cigarette case and.... a long black cigarette with a silver tip; it was perfumed and gave off a smell like incense”(Connell 25). Rainsford is tricked by the material items up until the point where Zaroff suggests the hunting of humans as a sport. The General believes that having the the cigarettes and nice house makes it ok to murder other humans. Zaroff also believes the setting he lives in and the items he uses justifies the murder of hundreds of people. His dining room “suggested a baronial hall of feudal times with it oaken panels, its high ceiling, its vast refectory tables where two score men could sit down to eat...the table appointments were of the finest--the linen, the crystal, the silver, and the china”(24). Zaroff feels no guilt, no pain for killing the sailors, because in his head, he believes that having all the enviable, beautiful items will cover his blood stained hands of their crime. ...of Latin. I wanted to take a look at Italy and their language to determine how it changed from Latin and how it spread based on different influences as well. The Italian language happens to be the closet language to Latin now (Latin Language, 2012). The Latin language came from Northern Europe and expanded along side of the growth of the Roman State. Latin was also influenced by other languages that were spoken and continued to develop over time. There were many differences when it came to the use of Latin in writing and how it was used when speaking due to the education or lack of education of individuals. Another influence of the Latin language was religion. The Greek and Latin fathers of the Church had come together to create the definition of the Christian doctrine (Sayre, 2012). The ways of communication through the Western Church were all dependant on the Latin language. The Greek books of the New Testemant and the Hebrew Bible were both translated into Latin which then also became the bible of the Roman Catholic Church. The language spread to others through their religion as they came together to create a language of common understanding. When the Roman Empire gained more control and began to take over, the Latin language began to take more control as well. There are characteristics of a civilization that are more essential than others, some of which may be more important to one group than to another group. For a complex society to exist, it must have means to provide for a growing population. Acquiring resources is vital for a civilization to flourish. ...Humanities and Its Value Many times when a person is asked about humanities he may not know exactly what the teacher is asking. “Humanities?” the student may think without realizing how profound and useful it is within the world. Humanities can include many different studies upon the world, in its most general description it is a complete study of human ideas and expressions with emphasis on both developing techniques and skills for studying art, as well as learning about actual artistic creations. Stanley Fish whom argued that Humanities is merely not a tool but a whole category of its own that is taught is most likely hitting the nail on the head. Intriguingly enough, Humanities is useful in its own way of studies of our interpretations through art, music and other categories of historic pieces. For example, throughout the world people may look at a piece and start interpreting it, while referring to its historic features such as the work of Yun Gee’s painting, the Lone Ranger. The lone Ranger is a painting in which has a historic value which refers to the time period where Chinese were migrating towards the U.S. during the time of the gold rush.
