Assignment 1.1 Communication Process Model

Who was the sender? Myself
Who was the receiver? Co-worker
What was the message? That a certain job was accomplished when in fact it wasn’t.
What channel was used to send the message? Voice and hand signals
What was the misunderstanding that occurred?
A co-worker and I were moving and dispatching a lot of priority mail using forklifts. As soon as we were finished in that area we were supposed to move to another area to help move some mail. We were in a rush and it’s usually fairly loud in the building so we use hand signals a lot so we don’t have to scream at each other. As we were trying to finish I gave him a thumbs up and asked “are we done” and he replied with a thumbs up saying “yes”. About an hour later our supervisor called us to the priority area and showed us that we had left a container of priority mail and it didn’t get dispatched on time. Later on I asked my co-worker why he said we were done and replied “I thought you said you going to get the last one”. It was a simple miscommunication, but it was definitely avoidable. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? We should have been face to face instead of trying to yell across the building. 1. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity?
Solid communication is a necessity in the workplace. Without it, things can go wrong very fast. 2. What seemed to be the main causes of the misunderstanding?
External noise and the fact that we were both in a rush to get the job done.

Its most commonly defined as the process of sending and receiving messages (Cheesbro, O’Connor, and Rios, 2010). This includes all give-and-take of information, thoughts, and messages. Communication is proficient orally or non-orally.
