Stereotypes are defined as characteristics that are associated to members of a specific social group or category, usually based on people assuming they have similarities because of their membership. The stereotype mostly envelops around typical social groups or individuals. Moreover, the stereotype is less of the objective perception and more of the subjective assumption without proof. On the other hand, prejudice is more commonly known as a negative attitude towards people who belong to different social groups. It is usually a biased, and unfair judgment. Prejudice exaggerates the ideas of the social group segregation, and how people from different social groups behave differently. Discrimination is known as a behavior that is a prejudice based on the person’s membership in society. The word discrimination is often associated with the idea of derogatory prejudice, especially when it comes to class and race. The difference there is between stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination is that stereotyping can both be negative or positive, while prejudice and discrimination are usually assumed to be truly negative point of views. The idea of stereotyping is the belief to categorize people, prejudice is the negative views, while discrimination is the prejudice with both mental and emotional judgment served negatively. Take the example of job interviews. Anybody can apply for jobs interviews. The person may be of normal weight and of overweight, though there never was a written rule regarding normal weight people being more preferred, recruiters tend to be more biased to the normal weight people, especially when their job is to interact with customers. They want someone who looks “nice”, needless of their efficiency while doing their job, especially if the job requires a lot of dealing with people. Muslims are a people embracing the religion, Islam, which means Muslims are part of a religious sector. Arabs are people who dwell or own the Arabian or Arab regions. This makes Arabs a nationality, where they speak Arabic and is free to choose whatever faith or religion they plan to follow. Muslims can have a native tongue or speak any language in the world; who knew these two groups were this different. After the terrorist’s attacks of 9/11, the United States placed policies that have targeted Arabs and Muslims. One new policy that was put in place was by the Department of State. The policy mandated that at 20-day hold be placed on all non-immigrant visa applications by men between the ages of 18-45 from 26 countries. All such applicants were subject to special security clearances. Another policy that was put in place was the changes in issuance of visitor’s visas. The policy awarded persons from special registration such as Iran, Iraq, Algeria, etc., visitor’s visas. The date indicates a 39% percent drop for these countries in 2002, and significant decreases for all special registration countries except Eritrea. ...Prejudice is a difficult subject to adequately cover because its definition is far more complicated than we might assume. Preconceived negative judgment is at the basis of how we act, feel, behave and how we view each other’s beliefs. Some attitudes can be automatic, conscious, intentional or even unintentional, depending on the situation. I interviewed a few of my friends, asking them if they were prejudice. Their first reactions were quick and shallow. “No, I love black people,” or my favorite, “I’m not prejudice, I have a colored TV.” To define the question better, I explained the different aspects and concepts of prejudice such as sexism, stereotyping, generalization, discrimination and racism. I asked them if they have ever involved a negative evaluation of someone or some group. The answer was an uncomfortable yes. Now, being made aware that they have prejudice roots and tendencies, I asked them the same initial question once again. They all still claimed that they weren’t prejudice and even tried to justify their answer. They weren’t going to wear that label. Everyone stereotypes. Although I am a blended individual, composed of various races and ethnicities, I primarily identify myself as being a black woman. I have encountered various forms of prejudices since I was a little girl. Just recently for example, I was told at work that I had pretty hair for a black girl, and that most black girls like myself did not have the type of hair that I had. The woman then asked me if I put water on my hair would it curl up like one of my other co-workers hair who was obviously bi-racial.
