Critical Thinking Worksheet

Choose one of the following scenarios:

• You are a member of a group working on a class project. The group members are enthusiastic about the project and arrange a meeting time to begin planning. You forget to mark your calendar and miss the meeting. The group posts a summary of the meeting with assignments and deadlines for the project. You apologize to the group and agree to complete the topic research for the project. You realize you have a paper due in another course on the same day that your research is due, and you concentrate most of your time on your individual assignment. The paper takes longer than you thought, and you are unable to conduct research for the group project by the deadline. You feel bad about this and do not respond to inquiries from group members. You post a message to the group explaining you are having computer problems. The group expresses their empathy and proceeds without you, completing and submitting the project with your name included.

• A position opens in your department at work. You recommend to a coworker and friend in another department that she should apply. You previously consulted with this person on small projects, and she appears knowledgeable and responsible. In fact, you became friends through these work contacts. Your friend appreciates your recommendation and arranges a meeting to ask you more details about the work done by your department. The meeting is productive, and your friend takes notes to help with the application process. Your friend stops by your desk a few days later to thank you for your help, because the application was long and detailed. She confides that some of the information she included on the application is not entirely accurate. Some of her work experience did not match the job requirements and needed to be reworded for a…...

...you need to ask yourself to help you think through the situation and determine a course of action. 1. If she lied to me about her application, then has she lied to me in the past? 2. Does she have no self-respect for herself, which would make her lie on this application? 3. Does she have no loyalty to the company? 4. What would happen to her if she lost her job? 5. What would happen if they knew she lied on the application, and I knew and summited it anyway? Part B: Questioning yourself, as you did in the exercise above, is a form of critical thinking. This can, in turn, help you understand more about how you work. Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • What were your aptitude results? • Describe your capacity to resolve complex situations and solve problems based on your results. • What are you strengths and weaknesses in the area of reasoning and critical thinking? • How will understanding this help you in both your academic life and workplace?...

I’m using an inverse variation equation and I need to determine the value of the dependent variable when the independent variable is zero. 2. The graph of this direct variation equation has a positive constant of variation and shows one variable increasing as the other variable decreases. 3. When all is said and done, it seems to me that direct variable equations are special kinds of linear equations and inverse variation equations are special kinds of rational equations. 4. Using the language of variation, I can now state the formula for the area of a trapezoid, A = 1/2h(b1 + b2), as, “A trapezoid’s area varies jointly with its height and the sum of its bases.” 5. In a hurricane, the wind pressure varies directly as the square of the wind velocity. If wind pressure is a measure of a hurricane’s destructive capacity, what happens to this destructive power when the wind speed doubles? 6. The heat generated by a stove element varies directly as the square of the voltage and inversely as the resistance. If the voltage remains constant, what needs to be done to triple the amount of heat generated? 7. The Hubble Space Telescope can see stars and galaxies where brightness is......

...University of Phoenix Material Critical Thinking Worksheet In the following exercises, determine whether each statement “makes sense” or “does not make sense” and explain your reasoning in 50 to 100 words for each answer. 1. I’m using an inverse variation equation and I need to determine the value of the dependent variable when the independent variable is zero. The rational expression is undefined at any value that produces a denominator of zero. This does not make sense, because if a variable in a rational expression was replaced by a number that caused the denominator to be 0, then the number should be excluded as a replacement 2. The graph of this direct variation equation has a positive constant of variation and shows one variable increasing as the other variable decreases. This situation makes sense and the reasoning is a positive constant remains the same therefore that number would not change. The continuing variation would be the ratio of corresponding values of the variables, or contents would multiple by which the variable multiplied. The numbers would not go up or down because it is never changing. The one way the numbers could go up or down would be if there was a changeable variable but this is not the case in question 3. When all is said and done, it seems to me that direct variable equations are special kinds of linear equations and inverse variation equations are special kinds of rational equations. This does make sense...
