Dr Bill Cosby spoke to an audience at the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Brown vs.Topeka board of Education supreme court decision. Cosby’s purpose was to inform his audience of the shortcomings of the African-American community and persuade them to better themselves. He began his speech by acknowledging the sacrifices that were made for civil rights. He then compared those achievements to the devastating and poor statistics of school dropouts and bastard children found in the African-American community today. Cosby proceeded to attack the lack of parenting that occurs in lower middle class environments that, he says, leads to incarceration. He also addressed a lack of accountability in the community by saying “God is Tired of You”.
Cosby chose to address his audience directly by using words like “you”and “we”. He made jokes throughout his speech to keep his audience engaged and used a level of diction that was accessible to his audience. He employed several calls to action, in which he encourages African-Americans to “Take the neighborhood back”, by dressing more conservatively and speaking proper English. He spoke about the illiteracy that is prominent amongst black athletes and multimillionaires, who found success despite their obstacles.
Throughout his speech Dr. Cosby reinforced the message that the state of the black community is not due to what outsiders have imposed, but what black people have done to themselves. The tone of Cosby’s words was sincere and passionate. His word choice reflected his passion accurately. He infused religion when condemning actions and used more crude terms to describe actions that he felt were most distasteful.
Cosby finished his speech on a strong note. He condemned the African-American community for failing to raise their standards and be appreciative of opportunities that past generations afforded them. He revealed…...

...Journal #1 My speech wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it could have been better if I put more time into getting more information from my partner. The body paragraphs needed to give more information and go into more detail. Although it wasn’t that bad of a speech giving the thought that we met up for about thirty minutes. Back in high school when someone was giving a speech, we, the audience always tried to make them laugh, or simply just didn’t pay attention to the speaker and did something else. Now the audience was paying attention and being respectful which calmed me down when giving my speech. As the speaker I needed to be more enthusiastic while giving my speech, because how is the audience going to be interested if I don’t even seem interested. I noticed very few people glancing at their phones or just with a blank look in their face; this made me relax a little more for some reason. Even though I could have had more information and gone more into detail, my speech did flow from the thesis statement to my conclusion paragraph. I was getting more nervous as the names kept getting closer to mine, once my partner Aldo, brought me up when he gave his speech, which calmed my nervousness down a bit because it wasn’t that bad being in front of the class and having everyone’s eyes looking at you. Once my turn came to speak, I took deep breaths as I made my way to the front of the classroom, and once there I paused, and took one last deep breath, and......

I started to be that change at a very young age, by baking cookies for the elderly to restoring parks for my community. I had the great opportunity to be a part of a life changing experience called HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) which built and shaped me to be the great leader I am today, I don’t think I would be up here giving this speech if I hadn’t gone to HOBY. I have been a part of SGA since 8th grade and fell in love with it ever since. I got an award for doing more than the president that year. Now I would like to share with you why I want to take on the position of CCASC president. I am dedicated, passionate, and persistent to the point where I get things done. I have a strong will, and I always follow through on my promises. I’m a natural leader, and I’m extremely good at fundraising. We have had several fundraising events at Westlake high school that I took part in that were a success. I have many fresh, new ideas that I will bring to CCASC. Cosby Show

...Chapt 1 Assignment “The Cosby Show” Growing up in the 70's and 80's were very challenging. I came from a very traditional family, meaning both parents were in the home as well as all 7 of my siblings. My father worked hard and my mother stayed at home and raised us for a portion of that time. We often watched a lot of family oriented shows, “ Eight is Enough'', which was my mother's favorite.(I wonder why) Little House On The Prairie, The Jeffersons, etc. My personal favorite was the Cosby Show, although Little House on the Prairie was definitely in the running. One of the reasons I favor The Cosby Show is because it gave me hope. Growing up in the projects was not a joyful experience, although my parents did a great job with what they had. The Cosby Show depicted family in a very positive way. It provided an alternative to the stereotypical African American family. Unlike other black sitcoms such as “Good Times”, which always left you depressed after watching the show, “ The Jeffersons'', whose nanny was very loud and opinionated. The Huxtables were upper class people. Cliff Huxtable( Bill Cosby) was a doctor and his wife Claire( Phylicia Rashad) was a successful lawyer. The family structure was that of a nuclear unit or modern family. The gender roles of the parents were that of egalitarian. They were a two parent home with 5 children. They both balanced the responsibilities of supporting their children through work and quality time. The gender of the children were...

...Homework: persuasive Speech Self-Assessment May 3, 2014 The topic nursing was appropriate for my audience. Even though the majority of my audience. My specific purpose in the speech was to persuade my audience about the benefits of nursing and the choices in career path that they can choose. I feel that it was achieved successfully in the amount of time I had. Additionally, my thesis statement was also clearly which I am sure we can all relate to that you will never forget the way someone makes you feel even if you forget their names clearly stated. The speech was well organized from beginning to end. The major functions of the speech introduction were accomplished by initially getting the attention of the audience although The conclusion reinforced the audience’s understanding of the information presented and was tied to the central idea of the benefits of nursing Adequate research was conducted. There were four APA citations. All language presented was pronounced correctly and non-technical terms were used for overall understanding. The presentation of my speech was not rushed. However, somewhere along my notes my cards were mixed up, however I continued and just diverted to the card I should be reading from. It was a bit difficult to maintain my concentration but I kept the flow. This is evident in the review of my speech where I can be seen looking at my notes. Appropriate pauses, pitch, tone and rate were used throughout my speech. This was evident during...

...Erinn Elledge COMS203-1501A-08 Laticia Dezell 01/23/2015 Speech # 1 I Have a Dream August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. The speaker gained the attention of the audience of all the people who joined in the demonstration for freedom for the Negro’s. The topic of his speech is for freedom for the Negro, the Emancipation Proclamation. He is trying to stop discrimination for those of color. The facts and explanations that support his arguments are Constitution and Declaration of Independence are two very important explanations of the freedom all men even black. Civil Rights are a good example of his speech. Martin Luther King Jr. delivery of this speech was very good. He not only emphasized with loudness but you could hear the trembling in his voice when he would say something that was of great importance and he would raise his voice even higher. He was very enthusiastic when speaking of the freedom that the people should get and how some day he hoped the children would be able to walk the streets just as white people were able to. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded people throughout his speech that “I Have a Dream” he wasn’t talking only of himself but for all blacks in our nation. He emphasized what he wanted to see some day. His hopes and dreams for a better country. I believe in this speech he did well throughout, there really isn’t just one section or another that I liked better it was all wonderful....

...Speech 1 “A Time for Choosing” by Ronald Reagan 1. Ronald Reagan gained the audience attention by his opening statement “ I’ve been permitted to choose my own words and ideas” 2. The topic was A Time for Choosing, it was a presidential candidate speech concerning the upcoming election which was going to be held in a few week. It explained his standpoint and views on the hot topics such as the war and the economy 3. Ronald Regan stated that he once was a democrat but felt that the issues facing the nation required him to cross the line. He is quoted as saying” those who have the most have did the least to prevent it from happening”. He stated that freedom is fragile. The government doesn’t control things without controlling people. 4. Ronald Regan was an excellent speaker. His speech flowed well. There were times he used jokes to lighten the mood as well as a way to relate to the listeners. When he was making appoint his voice became more stern and serious. 5. He transitioned into his conclusion by quoting Alexander Hamilton 6. I feel he did well by using stories; for example, the story about the Cuban who said that he had a place to go for freedom, but we as Americans have no place else to go for peace 7. The only improvements I think should have been made would have been not using the names of people for joke examples Speech 2 “Acres of Diamonds” by Russell H Conwell 1. ...The Longest Day, the Shortest Speech http://vsotd.com/featured-speech/longest-day-shortest-speech#sthash.5hXfbsUi.dpuf "The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do." Address by Dwight D. Eisenhower Written in case of failure of D-Day Invasion, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 In my analysis of this speech, I have found that the speech fails to adhere to the guidelines of informative speech. Although it meets a few of the guidelines, the speech overall is unsuccessful in the essence of providing the vital information needed to make it a worthy informative speech. In it’s opening sentence, the speech violates the guideline “Don’t be too technical”. The speaker’s use of words such as “landings” and “foothold” are technical jargons that the ordinary audience would not be able to fully comprehend. His speech is more directed towards the military savvy audience than the common citizen and leaves a lot to be desired. The speaker could have improved his speech by using less specialized words. Although sometimes, it becomes difficult to put military terms in easy to understand language, the speaker could have used words such as “attack” in lieu of “landings” and “control” instead of “foothold”. This would have made it much easier for the audience to understand and relate to the scene. Also, in the opening sentence, the speaker violates another guideline “Don’t overestimate what the audience knows” about the topic. He refers to......

...Introduction: We’ve all heard the phrase, “a man’s best friend’ at least a few thousand times in our life time. When we say that, we are referring to the cutest most loyal animals of them all, the dog. For our group speech we decided that volunteering at a Pitbull shelter was just the right thing to do that fit us all perfectly. Saving Grace Pitbull Rescue has a history of helping dogs, what we did there was very influential and what they do for all those dogs is truly amazing. To start off with the breed “Pitbull” has a very bad reputation anywhere that they go. In the 1980s, the breed began to develop a terrible reputation. It's not clear where the cycle started, but at some point, Pit bulls became the dog breed of choice for the criminal element, or those looking for dogs to threaten, guard, intimidate and generally look scary. This led to many owners abusing their Pit bulls into becoming vicious, mean attack dogs (mom.me, 2014). One thing that I found that was very true was this quote from Cesar Millan, “Aggression is not a breed thing. It's a state of mind, and it comes from how the human is with the dog. There are four levels of energy, regardless of the breed: low, medium, high, very high. The idea is to get a dog in your same level or lower than you (BrainyQuote.com, 2015)”. In the next few moments you will learn the history of saving grace from Jonas, what we did such as the services we provided from Danny, and finally what they do, that being the services that......

Bill Cosby Is a Hypocrite

...The hypocrite that is Bill Cosby. Have you ever looked up to someone and follow in his footsteps to find out that he is not the man he says he is? Bill Cosby is a great example of being someone you look up to finding out the end that he is a fraud. I truly believe that Bill Cosby is a hypocrite, because if he criticizes other people that were just like him, he never stopped being a dirty man after he got married, and he also said that he protects their women. Bill Cosby has made a career of making fun of African Americans that are poor, but he fails to recall that in his young life he was also a black man. Cosby has forgotten were he came from and has made a name for himself for criticizing people that are poor. This is shown when contemporary artist Michael Owens states, “He used his celebrity status to clown poor black people. Cosby used to be a poor black person.” (July 21, 2015). This is saying that Cosby is a hypocrite because he has made fun of poor African Americans and he has also been a poor African American. Cosby should remember his roots before thinking about making fun of someone of a group of people. To add, that Bill Cosby is a hypocrite Cosby has said, “I'm beginning to hate men,’ he quips, ‘because I know men. They're basically filthy and nasty and dirty. I know that. I used to be a man, before I got married.” (as cited in July 9, 2015). This was taken from an article from Stacia L. Brown who is a writer. Cosby is saying that when he got married he......
