What are conspiracy theories?

- Explanations – power relations
A conspiracy theory is an explanatory proposition that accuses two or more persons, a group, or an organization of having caused through secret planning and deliberate action, an illegal event or situation.
People formulate conspiracy theories to explain, for example, power relations in social groups and the perceived existence of evil forces.

- Oxford English Dictionary: The American Historical Review - 1909
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first use of the phrase "conspiracy theory" occurred in a 1909 article in The American Historical Review

Why do people believe in conspiracy theories?
- A sense of control
There are number of factors, but probably one of the most important ones in this instance is that, paradoxically, it gives people a sense of control. People hate randomness, they dread the sort of random occurrences that can destroy their lives, so as a mechanism against that dread, it turns out that it’s much easier to believe in a conspiracy. Then you have someone to blame, it’s not just randomness.
- Psychological forces (VS evidence-based thinking)
Psychological forces like motivated reasoning have long been associated with conspiracy thinking, but scientists are learning more every year. On the other side there is the evidence-based thinking which most of the people who do not believe in these theories have. o Motivated reasoning Motivated reasoning is an emotion-biased decision-making phenomenon

- Expand the conspiracy
Another common trait is the need to constantly expand the conspiracy as new evidence comes to light. An example of this is the climate change conspiracy theory which states that the climate changes are not true and are made up. This is, as we all know, a topic that has been researched a lot, but the conspiracy theorists means the…...

Conspiracy Theories

...The basis of conspiracy theories shows trends of repetition throughout history that implement fear into everyday life. True or untrue, conspiracies are still followed, almost religiously, by many people. Theories that are wrong are still being pursued by people, and the choices they make based on those theories influence how they live their life. Conspiracies start from a source that is displeased by a particular group or activity. The source of the conspiracies usually makes them to slander the group that they are displeased with. The global catastrophe, which was known as the end of the world, compelled fear into the minds of people everywhere. For decades, 2012 was prophesized as being the end. The Mayans had carved a calendar that mysteriously stopped on December 21, 2012. Because the Mayans were such a highly respected and omniscient civilization, people instantly believed that the world would end based on their predictions from thousands of years ago. “The Maya invented an accurate calendar almost 2,000 years ago which measured time in 394-year periods known as baktuns and some anthropologists believe the 13th baktun ends on December 21. While some experts say the calendar never actually predicted an apocalypse, it has been interpreted that way by doom mongers all over the world.”(“End” N.A.). Others believed that a massive planet, four times the size of Jupiter, called Nibiru would collide with the earth or come close enough to shift the world’s polar axis and cause......

New World Order: Not Built in a Day

...The New World Order: Not Built in a Day Luke Nosko 2011-04-02 David Tabachnick Word Count: 3028 The end of the Cold War, marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union, was the beginning of an unprecedented geopolitical scenario in modern times, namely the existence of a lone superpower nation which easily dominated the other countries of the world in terms of military strength and international economic and political influence. With this never-before-seen position of power in the modern, globalized world came the heightened importance of American foreign policy decisions, and the world waited to see how the US would react to being thrust abruptly into this role of the unipole of world power. The first test of US foreign policy as the sole superpower would actually come before the official dissolution of the USSR (though it had been in steep economic decline for some time), when Saddam Hussein lead the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. US President George H. W. Bush would place this conflict into perspective for the countries now looking to the US for leadership in his address to a joint session of Congress and the nation on September 11, 1990, and it was then that he most famously claimed that the US would strive to establish and protect the concept of a New World Order (NWO): “We stand today at a unique and extraordinary moment. The crisis in the Persian Gulf, as grave as it is, also offers a rare opportunity to move toward an historic period of cooperation. Out of these...

9/11 Conspiracy Theories

...9/11 Conspiracy Theories Hannah N. Powell Floyd Central High School 9/11 Conspiracy Theories On the morning of September 11, 2001, the terrorist attack in New York caused a shock to a vast majority of the United States. We have all seen the terrible footage of the twin towers collapsing and the crash of the plane at the Pentagon and in the field in Pennsylvania. It seems almost unthinkable for our own government to potentially control the awful events of 9/11. Around 8:00 am on September 11, 2001, Flight 175 from United Airlines departed Boston carrying two pilots, seven flight attendants, and eighty-one passengers. Within five minutes, the plane’s identification transponder was shut off; it was hijacked and turned for New York (McConnachie, p.396). Also, at around 8:00am, American Airlines Flight 11 left for Los Angeles. A few minutes after the plane departed, it was hijacked and directed towards New York. Around 8:05 am, Flights 93 and 77 from American Airlines changed its course and headed toward New York. At 8:46am Flight 11 slams into the North Tower at the World Trade Center striking the north side, only fourteen stories from the top. 9:03am South Tower at the World Trade Center was plunged by Flight 175. 9:45am Flight 77 collides into the Pentagon. Flight 93 crashed in a field after passengers rush the hijackers. Around 10:10am the Pentagon, the North, and South towers collapsed (McConnachie, p.396). Evacuations had already begun in the South Tower when the...

New World Order

...A New World Order By: Karen Tumulty & Mark Thompson TIME Obama picked his national-security team and it is made up of members who tend to disagree on major policy issues. Each one of them is a powerful figure in the political world except for the national security adviser James Jones. Jones is former four star marine general he worked for John McCain but claims no party and doesn’t take any political side. He feels that the political parities and viewpoints shouldn’t interfere with national security. Robert Gates a familiar face will be returning again this year, Obama is the eighth president he has served under. Hillary Clinton was nominated by Obama to be secretary of state, she was a fierce opponent against Obama during the primaries but he knows her foreign policy skills are a huge talent of hers. The national-security team is only a nomination position and it is up to congress to decide if they like the presidents pick if they do the president gets to keep his pick and they will become part of the team. If not he will have to choose another person and put his pick to congress for approval. This is one of congresses checks against the executive office and it is there for congress to make sure the right person gets the job and tries to keep the president from choosing one of his homies or a member of the fringe elements of society. Obama still has to keep these opposing opinions in check or it will turn out like President Bushes national-security team......

China and New World Order

...China and New World Order Based on what you have learnt in this course, what kind of world order do you think we have now and to what extent a new world order is shaped by the rise of China? In what aspects is the rising China changing the existing world order? World order has a variety of definitions. In general, it refers the pattern of relations between states, behaved according to a set of institutional rules and principles. It changes over time when great powers rise and fall. Suggested by George Modelski, the Long Cycle Theory believes a war will emerge after the rising power threatens the original hegemony and might replace the existing world order. The challenge posed by the rise of China to the western dominance is felt worldwide as her second largest economic status. A question has been asked by an American scholar John Ikenberry – “Will China overthrow the existing order or become part of it?” This essay aims at introducing the current world order and investigating how it has been changed with the inclusion of China. One of the two major types of world order is the Westphalia order which is based on the modern state system. It is the concept of authority on the territory that the sovereignty of states and the fundamental right of politics is self-determined without any intervention from other states in internal affairs. This system highly respects the territorial integrity of states and the legal equality between states that is no matter the size of a......

With the exception of a few ‘rogue’ states, most have realized its best to ‘play’ the game and embraced market values. * Led to: * 1. The ‘Retreat of the State’ argument * 2. Jfk Conspiracy Theory

...creation of many conspiracy theories regarding the death of president JFK. The conspiracy theory regarding president JFK’s assassination is widely believed due to the propagation by mass media. Conspiracy theories have been propagated all around the world through the use of many different means. Nowadays, people spread large amounts of information, facts and rumors using social media. Social media makes it extremely easy for people to be aware of the many things occurring all over the world. Yet, there were also many other important mediums that were used to propagate the conspiracy theories about Kennedy’s assassination. Just like the conspiracy theories regarding the murder of Princess Diana, the death of JFK was largely spread by mass media with the use of television, radio, speeches and books, as well as many other methods of communication. Mass media continuously focuses on rumors for these are more interesting to people than the real facts. Furthermore, mass media turns several rumors into facts when propagating a conspiracy theory with the use of repetition. When people start hearing the same thing over and over again, some start believing that what is being told is true. These new facts then reveal new conclusions about the conspiracy theory, putting the last conclusion into doubt. This creates a vicious circle where it becomes extremely difficult to know what actually happened. For example, take the “magic bullet” from the conspiracy theory concerning......

Kurt Cobain Conspiracy Theories

...Love would receive an abundance of fame and wealth from a suicide, not a divorce: she would inherit and manage all of Nirvana’s revenue, record sales would heavily increase because of the sudden death (which means more income), and the publicity would benefit Love to launch her own musical career. It was not long until numerous conspiracy theories began to circle around about Cobain’s departure. There have been various books, articles, and even films published containing personal opinions and insight on the conspiracies. One piece of information, however, has caused a great deal of controversy amongst fans – El Duce, a Los Angeles based musician featured in Nick Broomfield's documentary, Kurt & Courtney, claimed that he was offered $50,000 by Love to assassinate Cobain. As outrageous as it sounds, the musician passed two lie detector tests by the world's top polygraph experts; just a week after he was interviewed by Broomfield, he was hit by a train and announced dead on sight. The police stated that his death was an accident, but thousands believe Love had something to do with the awful tragedy. The way Cobain abandoned his fans left the world paralyzed and medical examiners baffled. Evidently, he locked himself inside the greenhouse, injected 1.52 mgs per liter of heroin, and pulled the trigger of his 20-gauge shotgun. The police work for this case was clumsy and careless, especially when it came down to detecting Cobain’s fingerprints on the shotgun – absolutely no......

Book Review "World Order"

...Henry Kissinger’s World Order asks, if today’s leaders can rise above their own definition of world “order”, to achieve peace and global stability. Especially when the “balance of power” is constantly threatened by anarchy and chaos. The reason Kissinger, makes this his core enquiry, is because it addresses a challenge that the human race faces today, one that it might fear the most- a total global chaos. Kissinger uses conflict between different nations as the premise to his argument. He does so by looking at the historical experience of different civilizations, even going back to the Dark Ages, as suggested by the subheading of the book. The author begins by defining World Order as “an inexorably expanding cooperative order of states observing common rules and norms, embracing liberal economic systems, forswearing territorial conquest, respecting national sovereignty and adopting participatory and democratic systems of governance”. But in the introduction, the author also lets us know that “No truly global 'world power' has ever existed”. And what is considered to be the 21st century world order, is just a treaty which was devised in western Europe, without taking into consideration, the other countries and civilisations. Towards the end, Kissinger remarks that the leitmotif of our age is science and technology. With countries making huge advances in technology, they consider the security dilemma, before looking at the zero (sum) game analysis. Technology could thus......

September 11th Conspiracy Theories

...SEPTEMBER 11TH CONSPIRACY THEORIES On September 11th, 2001, four American Airlines flights were hijacked. All of the planes were full of passengers. One aircraft crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, one hit the Pentagon, and the other two hit the World Trade Center in New York City. Most Americans remember where they were when they this malicious series of events happened, and the shocking feeling they had when they heard the news. When this first happened most people were scared for their lives and the lives of their loved ones. It was not until later that people started to ask questions about who was behind these events. Allegedly, a number of terrorists affiliated with the group Al-Qaeda were responsible. A few months after the attacks of 9/11 a group of skeptics formed something called “The 9/11 Truth Movement”. This group found a number of occurrences and facts that make some of the attacks and other happenings of 9/11, not likely, possibly set up, and in some cases nearly impossible. One of the groups most popular claims was that the World Trade Center falling was a controlled demolition. After demolition experts reviewed the videos of the World Trade Center falling, they agreed with the skeptics of the 9/11 Truth Movement. According to experts the building falls as if many small explosives were planted on all sides and it exploded in a very specific order, just like in a controlled demolition. When videos of the World Trade Center falling are compared with a building...

Brics Build a New World Order

...Something stupendous happened in the middle of a recession last year. At a time when vast swathes of Europe were being laid waste by an economic tsunami, world trade grew fastest in the last 50 years. It is not hard to figure where this growth was taking place – not in Europe or the United States. The long anticipated South-South show is now a reality. Trade data show a paradigm shift from the advanced nations, which will show an import growth of 0.9-1 percent, while the emerging economies will exhibit import growth of 4.5-5 percent this year. What this means is that the emerging nations are trading more among themselves while the West is being edged out of the fastest growing markets. But behind these statistics hides another story – the United States, the flagship of the Anglo-American empire, is listing. And from its shadow is emerging a new world order being drafted by the BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and the latest member, South Africa. Since the G-7 has turned into a gabfest, the BRICS will increasingly set the global economic agenda. This is not a replay of the Great Game – geopolitical manoeuvres aimed at top dog status – though you can never discount that possibility entirely. The BRICS have no empire ambitions, and in fact are a diverse group of multi-ethnic nations with very little in common. Russia and South Africa are literally and racially poles apart, and India and China are on opposite ends of the freedom index. This rainbow......

Conspiracy Theory

...Conspiracy theory Protective sense of human-beings naturally help observe others’ action whether it is hostile or not. A person, who is suspicious of persecutory actions from others around him for some or no reason due to excessive protective sense, is said to be jealous. When this sense goes even further, it becomes a disease. In medicine, it’s called paranoia. This is one type of schizophrenia. Paranoia leads one to reach quick conclusion about why a bad thing has happened to him, accuse the suspect easily and overlook one’s easy conclusion. This disease is common in any society. Personal analysis is much better and healthier and therefore less prone to this disease while paranoia at the level of society is more common as it is more prone. Psychologists say that this has to do with the fact that individuals are directly responsible for consequences of his action while no one is held responsible for actions of society as a whole. Society is much more susceptible to paranoia and is easy to escalate it once infected. In other words, society holds much stronger conviction in order to find the person guilty of causing bad things got them. It’s very common for social paranoia to be directed towards people with different nationality, religion and beliefs, and different social strata. Its symptoms manifest in accusation and suspicion. Victims of social paranoia tend to be accused of having supernatural power and association with witches, and of plotting evil conspiracy. This......
