Week 1 Exercises

Prepare written answers to the following exercises:

1. As a field agent, you must determine the cause of a disease outbreak in the Los Angeles, California, area.

You discover that the disease originates from contaminated halibut. You write a report to your supervisor, which includes a description of the physical dimensions of the fish (length and weight). Your supervisor asks that you send the fish and a report about the fish (length and weight) to the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Because France uses the metric system, you must convert the figures for length and weight.

Complete the following chart by converting the inches and pounds to centimeters and kilograms:

|Physical measurements of specimen |
|Length (in inches) = 36 |Length (in centimeters) |
| |=91.44cm |
|Weight (in pounds) = 20 |Weight (in kilograms) =9.07kg |

2. State the law of mass and energy conservation. Describe how you might demonstrate this law.

The law of conservation of energy, is when the total amount of energy remains constant, but can change forms from one to another. The law of conservation of mass is when the total amount of mass remains constant, even if you change the shape or the chemical make up. I would demonstrate this law by proving how the energy and mass stays constant.

3. Adapted from Exercise 116 in Ch. 3 of Introductory Chemistry:

Global warming refers to the rise in average global temperature due to the increased concentration of certain gases, called greenhouse gases, in our atmosphere. Earth’s oceans, because of their high heat capacity, can absorb heat and therefore act to slow down global warming.

Exercise One Nt1310 Week 1

...NT1310:Week 1 Telecommunications By: Kenneth Martin You are an IT Network Specialist and are required to develop the design of the company’s telephone system for its new building which will begin construction in a few months. In order to get a background which will help when developing the new system, your supervisor asked you to research the current Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) currently used by the company. You must research the system components and report back to your supervisor , the Telecommunications Manager, within a week. 1. Describe a local land line phone system based on the following Landline Telephone Components: a. Local Loop a local loop is the wired connection from a telephone company's central office in a locality to its customers' telephones at homes and businesses. This connection is usually on a pair of copper wires called twisted pair. The system was originally designed for voice transmission only using analog transmission technology on a single voice channel. Today, your computer's modem makes the conversion between analog signals and digital signals. With Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), the local loop can carry digital signals directly and at a much higher bandwidth than they do for voice only. b. Central Office In telephone communication in the United States, a central office (CO) is an office in a locality to which subscriber home and business lines are connected on what is called a local...

Week 1 Problems and Exercises

...Problems and Exercises Week 1 Chapter 1 1. Why is it important to use systems analysis and design methodologies when building a system? Why not just build the system in whatever way seems to be “quick and easy?” What value is provided by using an “engineering” approach? It is important to use system analysis and design methodologies when building a system because it helps identify the problem to be solved and what the goal of the system should be. If you just started the fastest way you would most likely miss the reason for building it plus you may only create more problems. The value added is utilizing the time and resources you have most efficiently. By not using an engineering approach you risk too much waste. 8. How might prototyping be used as part of the SDLC? Prototyping can be used as a tool to help identify what users want from the system being designed. It aids the analyst in the SDLC process to help provide answers as to what users may want. Chapter 2 3. In the section on choosing off-the-shelf software, eight criteria are proposed for evaluating alternative packages. Suppose the choice is between alternative custom software developers rather than prewritten packages. What criteria would be appropriate to select and compare among competing bidders for custom development of an application? Define each of these criteria. Cost – the total cost of the application which includes all aspects from development to installation......

Week 1 Exercise

...Week 1 Exercise 1. Describe a local land line phone system based on the following Landline Telephone Components: a. Local Loop The local loop is the physical wiring that connects you to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). This line can be a voice line, or it can be a data line. The physical wiring for the local loop consists of a pair of twisted copper wires that run from the telephone company's central office to the subscriber's premise and another pair of twisted copper wires that run back to the telephone company's Central Office1 b. Central Office A Central Office is part of the telephone network in your area. It is a building in which the phone lines in your home or office terminate and connect to a much larger switching system. In large metropolitan areas, Central Offices are more appropriately LOs (local offices), because they serve a local area. The term "Central Office" is from the early days of the telephone system when the local telephone company really did have only one central office in each area.1 c. Local Exchanges A telephone exchange is a telecommunications system used in the public switched telephone network or in large enterprises. An exchange consists of electronic components and in older systems also human operators that interconnect (switch) telephone subscriber lines or virtual circuits of digital systems to establish telephone calls between subscribers. Also referred to as the Central office. d. POP In the telephone system, the......

Week 1 Homework Exercise Questions

...Chapter 1 Problems and Exercises 1. By following the system analysis and design methodologies you will be able to answer questions for the end user because you are going to build the system and design it to the end user. For example you build a system for tracking inventory and train the managers how to use it so they know what inventory is available. You don’t want to build the system in a quick and easy format because then it might not perform up the tasks that are required of it. By using the engineering approach I will be using the input from the users of the system to build a proper system that will benefit the current and future users. Also it will allow me to use current tools available to make sure the programs are functioning as required. 8. Prototyping during the SDLC life cycle may be incorporated in any of the 2nd and 3rd phases. You would create the prototype during the 2nd phase and then revamp it during the 3rd phase, and in the final phase it would be implemented. I feel that these two styles do not really mix that well but if necessary you could use prototyping during the SDLC process. Chapter 2 Problems and Exercises Q3. I would say all 8 are still important but the top 2 that I would use to make the final decision is Vendor support and Viability of Vendor Vendor support is just what it says, the support that the vendor will supply with the building and implementing of the software. And Viability of Vendor is how long the......

Nt1310 Week 1 Exercise 1

...1. A. A local loop is a loop of copper wire that allows a current to flow from a telephone to the central office and back. It is a dual-wire physical interface that connects a telephone to the central office and are typically referred to as a twisted pair. Many of these pairs are twisted together to make a cable for a local loop to provide multiple connections for multiple phone to interface with the local central office. b. A Central office is a building to which a subscribers home and business lines are connected to a local loop. This office has telecom. Switches to switch calls locally or to a long-distance carrier. A central office is also referred to as a local exchange. The subscribers associated to each central office in their local are identified by the first three digits of their telephone number, however, the last four digits identify the specific subscriber. One central office can support up to 10,000 subscribers with the same three digit prefix. Central offices can also support more than one local exchange. c. Local exchanges or local exchange carriers are telephone companies that provide service within a designated geographical area or an LATA, local access transport area. One LEC serves multiple central offices depending upon the geographical size and the population of the area. d. ...DNA Worksheet Casey Goodfellow 1/25/13 Answer the following in at least 100 words: 1. Describe the structure of DNA. 2. How does an organism’s genotype determine its phenotype? 3. Describe each stage of the flow of information starting with DNA and ending with a trait. DNA is something that makes up who and what we are. It’s our genetic makeup inside nearly every cell in a person’s body. DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA). This paper will describe the structure of DNA, share how an organism’s genotype determines its phenotype, and in closing, the stages of the flow of information starting with DNA will be discussed. Well, DNA is made up of atoms bonded together. It is also a three dimensional structure which has been described as a double helix. According to Campbell, Essential Biology with Physiology, A molecule of DNA contains two polynucleotides, each a chain of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group. Nucleotides are joined together by covalent bonds between the sugar of one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next. This results in a sugar-phosphate backbone, a repeating pattern of sugar-phosphate-sugar phosphate. The name, DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, with nucleic referring to DNA’s location in the nuclei of eukaryotic......

It 109 Lesson 1 Answers

...Exercises1. 1 What are the three main purposes of an operating system? • To provide an environment for a computer user to execute programs on computer hardware in a convenient and efficient manner. • To allocate the separate resources of the computer as needed to solve the problem given. The allocation process should be as fair and efficient as possible. • As a control program it serves two major functions: (1) supervision of the execution of user programs to prevent errors and improper use of the computer, and (2) management of the operation and control of I/O devices 1.2 What are the main differences between operating systems for main frame computers and personal computers? Operating systems for batch systems have simple requirements than for personal computers. Batch systems do not have to be concerned with interacting with a user as much as a personal computer. As a result, an operating system for a PC must be concerned with response time for an interactive user. Batch systems do not have such requirements. A pure batch system also may have not to handle time sharing, whereas an operating system must switch rapidly between different jobs. 1.3. List the four steps that are necessary to run a program on a completely dedicated machine. (a. Reserve machine time. (b. Manually load program into memory. (c. Load starting address and begin execution (d. Monitor and control execution of program from console. 1.4 We have stressed the need for an operating......
