A car rental or car hire agency is a company that rents automobiles for short periods of time (generally ranging from a few hours to a few weeks) for a fee. It is often organized with numerous local branches (which allow a user to return a vehicle to a different location), and primarily located near airports or busy city areas and often complemented by a website allowing online reservations.

Car rental agencies primarily serve people who have a car that is temporarily out of reach or out of service, for example travellers who are out of town or owners of damaged or destroyed vehicles who are awaiting repair or insurance compensation. Because of the variety of sizes of their vehicles, car rental agencies may also serve the self-moving industry needs, by renting vans or trucks, and in certain markets other types of vehicles such as motorcycles or scooters may also be offered.

Alongside the basic rental of a vehicle, car rental agencies typically also offer extra products such as insurance, global positioning system (GPS) navigation systems, entertainment systems.

Although some car rental companies provide self-moving cars which are often trucks and vans to customers with house moving purpose, most car rental companies offer cars such as economy cars, midsize cars, full size cars, standard cars, premium cars, SUV mostly to travelers.

From this point, Car rental companies provide transportation for travelers who temporary need cars in the travel destination, so car rental business are like hotels business with length of “Stay” and rate per “night”. Similarly to hotel chains, Car rental chains such as Avis, Enterprise and Hertz have different locations around the world. However, unlike hotel rooms, cars can be returned to a different location. Besides rental car service, ancillary services such as GPS rental, insurance sale.

...The car rental company EU-Rent has 1000 renting branches and 200,000 cars in towns all over Europe. At each branch cars, classified by car group, are available for rental. Each branch has a manager and booking clerks who arrange rentals and reservations for future rentals. Cars rented from one branch of EU-Rent may be returned to any other branch. The rental period and the car group are specified at the time of reservation. The renting branch must ensure that the car has been returned to some branch at the end of the rental period. If a car is returned to a branch other than the one that rented it, the car is assigned to the new branch. At the end of each day cars are assigned to reservations for the following day. If no car of a requested group is available, a branch manager may ask other nearby branches if they have cars they can transfer to him. EU-Rent has 400 service depots, each serving several branches. Cars may be booked for maintenance at any time provided that the service depot has capacity on the day in question. For simplicity, only one booking per car per day is allowed. A rental or service may cover several days. There are about 20,000,000 rental bookings and 800,000 service bookings per year. A customer can have several reservations but only one booking at a time. EU-Rent keeps records of about 5,000,000 customers, their rentals and bad experiences with customers. This information is used to decide whether to approve a rental. Customer records are kept......

Garrett Car Rentals Audit Report

...Garret Car Rentals Audit Report Objective Our objective is to perform an efficient and informative audit of Garrett Car Rentals, and identify areas of weak control that need to be improved. Recommendations * Use the COSO audit approach: * The condition is that there has been a tremendous increase in vehicle count, maintenance and repairs have increased in the past three years, and that inventory and inspections have increased additionally in the Wilsonville factory, while all other factors are decreasing. The inspections in the local service providers is decreasing while inspections in Wilsonville plant is increasing with greater inventory in the United States. * The criteria is that there should be more diversity in the locations or repairs and inspections, and not just the Wilsonville plant dominating all areas. The expenses of maintenance and repairs should not be so costly due to the fact that only minor repairs should be taking place, and private sales of vehicles should not be occurring because it is against company policy. * The cause is that there is a lack of segregation of duties, not reliable of financial statements, and the method of disposition of vehicles is unreliable. * The effect is that the company is not being protected, possible fraudulent activities could occur, and the expenses are increasing dramatically which leads to loss of revenue for the Wilsonville plant in the long run. ...Lotus Car Rental Alternative Fuel Proposal Joshua Maldonado and John Elias COMM/215 September 3, 2013 Vincent Palmieri Lotus Car Rental Alternative Fuel Proposal Combustion engine vehicles have come a long way, especially since conventional vehicles are reaching upwards of 30 miles per gallon. Conventional vehicles have only grown more reliable over the past few decades, and continue to improve with each passing year. Due to these advancements, many would agree that there is no reason to switch over to new alternative fuel vehicles. However, Lotus Car Rental should add 100 alternative fuel vehicles to its fleet, placing 50 vehicles in Boston, MA and 50 vehicles in Los Angeles, CA. in order to maximize profit. Alternative Vehicles There are many types of alternative fuel vehicles to choose from such as ethanol flex-fuel, electric, and hybrid vehicles. In addition to regular gasoline, flex-fuel vehicles operate on E85, which is a mix of gas and ethanol. The ethanol levels of E85 range between 51% and 83% (Clean Cities, 2013). The miles per gallon are decreased when flex-fuel vehicles utilize E85 rather than regular gasoline, due to ethanol containing less energy than gasoline (Clean Cities, 2013). Regardless of this fact, many individuals power these vehicles with E85 because it is a high-octane fuel (Clean Cities, 2013). The high octane increases the vehicles power and performance, ultimately giving the driver a better driving experience. Electric vehicles use......

Car Rental System

...The U.S. car rental industry is believed to have began back in 1916, when a Nebraska man by the name of Joe Saunders decided to lend out his Ford Model T to local and visiting businessmen. This savvy entrepreneur affixed a mileage meter to the left front wheel of the vehicle and would charge renters a total of 10 cents a mile in order to cover the wear and tear on his beloved Ford.   It didn't take long for Saunders to realize he'd stumbled onto a lucrative business idea. By 1925, Saunders' independent car rental company had grow to include operations In 21 states. Saunders also began to diversify his vehicle offering at this point – old Chrysler ads from the 1920's boast that Saunders' fleet included nearly $1 million worth of Chrysler vehicles.   The Battle Begins Competitors quickly caught onto Saunders' unique rent-a-car model, and it wasn't long before Walter L. Jacobs started renting out a dozen or so Model T Fords of his own. By 1923, Jacobs' business was grossing more than $1 million in annual sales, making him Saunders' main competitor.   Both Saunders and Jacobs built their independent car rental businesses from humble beginnings, but only one would come out on top. In the mid 1920s, Jacobs made the acquaintance of Mr. John Hertz, owner of The Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company in Chicago. Hertz eventually bought Jacobs' car rental company, giving birth to what is now one of the largest chain car rental companies in the nation. Later, General Motors would buy out......

Lotus Rental Car Alternative Fuel Feasibility

...power. The type of alternative fuel vehicle best suited for a rental car company such as Lotus, would depend on what types of alternative fuel or technology they have available. There are several different types of vehicles available, each one with a different or combination technology for alternative fuel use. Some vehicles are not available in all states, so this would also be a consideration for Lotus. The most popular and readily available alternative fuel vehicle is the Hybrid cars. Although not technically considered an alternative fuel car, these vehicles operate using advanced technology that combines the electric battery, motor and generator, creating more efficient use of traditional fuel. In addition to the gas tank they have an electric battery that stores energy during the speeding and slowing parts of a typical journey. This type of vehicle will offer a substantial savings in fuel costs because of the engine’s efficiency. Many car companies offer Hybrid cars at a reasonable cost to consumers. Honda, Toyota, Lexus and Ford all lead the way with a variety of these vehicles. There are a limited number of automakers producing Ethanol fuel vehicles. Ford, Dodge and Chevy each have a model currently available that runs on this alternative fuel. Ethanol-fueled vehicles run on a mixture of gasoline and a propellant derived from grain. There are an increasing number of alternative fuel cars now being supplied for this market including the Dodge Caravan,......

Car Rental Industry

...Rental car industry is a multibillion industry which needs proper management for it to bear good returns. Unlike other service industries, the car rental service is highly consolidated which gives new players into the business a cost disadvantage incurred from the high input cost and low economies of scale at the same time. This industry has become more competitive and a big chunk of the competition comes from two main sources within the market chain, these are leisure and corporate segments. The major players in the market have established networks of collaboration and deals with majority of the leisure segments and corporate leaving only a smaller percentage for other smaller car rental companies. But that does not rule out the possibility of competition among the major players (Jim Suhr, 2004). Developing of a proper working culture is a step towards revival of the car rental company. The company should strive towards training of their workers on how customers should be handled in order to achieve the satisfaction they deserve. The workers should also have a culture of team work, which will help them to cover any loop holes of service delivery thus maximizing their efforts towards having excellent services to the customers (Singh, 2002). In addition the company must ensure customer satisfaction through, putting the customers first. For instance, whenever a customer calls for an assistance in case of mechanical failure, the company should......
