Behavior Management Cycle It is a Tuesday morning and the bell has just rung. Most students are making their way to their classroom lines preparing to be escorted to class. The kindergarten playground that was once buzzing with activity is now quiet with six lines slowly being formed. Ms. M. has moved through the crowd of parents and has found her line. Ms. M. claps her hands three times and pauses. Students are familiar with this routine and begin looking in Ms. M.’s direction. She claps her hands three times again and several students clap three times in return. She then walks along the line and claps three times again. This time the entire class turns their bodies to the front of the line and they all clap three times in unison. Students are waiting for Ms. M. to speak and give the class direction. This paper will explain how Ms. M. addresses a situation created using Canter’s Behavior Management Cycle. This particular student often has difficulty transitioning and following directions. Explicit Directions Ms. M. stands in the front of her line and signals for her class to quiet their voices by placing her hand in the air in the peace symbol, this is a signal students are familiar with and have practiced from day one of school. She now has the class’ attention and she is now ready to give her students their first direction of the day. “Yesterday my class had a very difficult time getting in line and ready to walk to our classroom,” she begins to explain. “I know that you are capable of following directions because you have shown me many times before,” Ms. M. informs her class. Otherwise, students may not be able to concentrate on or benefit from the lesson plan because the student or students that are misbehaving continue to disrupt the class. Speaking out of turn, chatter amongst students, getting off task, sleeping during class, using cell phones or other types of technology and yelling across the classroom are all examples of disruptive behavior. Disruptive behavior can even escalate to issues much more severe such as threatening the safety and welfare of other students or teachers in the classroom. The first step, and most important for a teacher is to identify the disruptive behavior and address the inappropriate actions of the student in a professional manner. Moreover, a teacher should take action as soon as they first notice the student misbehaving. ...The Behavior Management Cycle is a systematic approach that will help teachers to motivate their student to quickly follow their directions. (Canter, L. 2006) This helps to maximize instruction time. There are three steps to the Behavior Management Cycle. Step one is to effectively communicate the explicit directions you expect students to follow. Step two is to use behavior narration to support students who are following the directions. Step three is to take corrective action with students who are still not complying with the directions. They are day two of a six day reward period. The reward they are working towards is to have 20 extra minutes of recess. The first time the students do not follow the directions they receive a warning. The second time is that they lose five minutes of recess. The third time is a call home to their parents and the fourth is that they are sent to the principles office. It was called” assertive discipline”, and put forth the idea that the teacher should take charge of the classroom. The Canter’s stated that, “that students had a right to learn in a calm, orderly classroom, and teachers had a right to teach without being interrupted by misbehavior.” (Building Discipline, 11th ed., Charles) Hence, assertive discipline was born. However, there are instances of special arrangements for collection for specified day of the week. The collector or messenger collects the payment from its clients and issues a duplicated copy of official receipts. The original is given to the clients as its copy. Before the end of the same banking day, the collector/messenger goes to their depository bank, prepares a deposit slip and deposits their collection. The authorized duplicate copy of the deposit slip is then attached to the copy of the duplicate official receipt and turned over to the accounting department. The accounts receivable clerk will reconcile the payment transaction. She checks if the validated duplicate copy of the deposit slips corresponds to the duplicate official receipt. His teacher has logged his behavior, asked her administrators for support, and has referred the child for a behavioral evaluation. During this time the teacher spoke with the child’s parents who stated that his behavior was similar at home. They also shared that the majority of his disruptive behavior seemed to be his way of seeking attention. During this time David’s behavior was growing more and more disturbing and aggressive. Based on the teachers observation logs, David had difficulty getting along with other children and consistently did not follow directions. On any given day, David hits, yells, or knocks things out of peer’s hands to gain the teachers attention or get something he wants. During some part of the day David is physically aggressive toward one or two peers, this usually includes kicking or punching. Most of the children have learned to ignore him or stay away from him. These behaviors can range from small issues like talking in class to major issues such as fighting. These issues need to be handled as early as possible by the teacher to ensure that as less of a disruption to other students occurs. If other students become disrupted by the actions of a few then these students could very well begin to engage in the disruptive behavior and begin to now cause a whole new set of issues for the classroom. Another consequence of the teacher not addressing the misbehavior immediately is that the behavior can become harmful to others or the student themselves. As a teacher, student safety should be the most important thing that the teacher is worried about. Once these behaviors are corrected and other students see that the behavior will not be allowed in the class, then they will begin to formulate within themselves how they should act and perform in that manner. ...Running Head: Canter 2 Teachers can expect disruptions on a daily basis. The disruptions or misbehaviors can by any numerous events from talking, not being focused, not sharing, or being prepared. The teacher needs to have a plan in place to be able to effectively manage the disruptions immediately. A disruption from a child misbehaving can be very damaging to the rest of the class and throw the rest of the day off when it is not handled immediately.
