CAN THE MIDDLE CLASS BE SAVED?

CRITICAL ANALYSIS-ACADEMIC LITERATURE

The severe economic downturn known as the Great Recession of 2008, has spurred the hastening of the challenges of the middle class in America. It has also highlighted the deepening chasm between the mass populace and the income elite. The resultant course has carved out significant consequences and changes that have widened the gap. The critical question is: what can we do to bridge that gap? According to research by a Citigroup a team of analysts in 2005, it was reported that the average U.S. consumer had essentially retreated relative to the patterns of growth for the U.S. economy. The 2005 report clearly outlined that America was composed of two disparate groups. Simply put, the two groups are the wealthy and everybody else. From an investment standpoint it was further noted that the rich were really the only group that mattered, and that everybody else had very little impact in terms of involvement with investment capital. From an analytical standpoint, the spending habits and savings rates of the second group had little to no impact because all of the influential factors for the American economy were coming from the top. In other words, the wealthiest 1% of households earn as much each year as the bottom 60% put together. Furthermore in terms of wealth, the top 1% possessed as much wealth as the bottom 90%. Looking at the data over time, each year the top 1% gained a greater share of the nation’s wealth and it was the top 1% of the population that essentially became the function of the growth in future returns of investment productivity and results. The Citibank analytical team classified the wealth stratification in the United States as a “plutonomy”, defined as a state where “economic growth…...

Industrialization Saved the Welsh Language

...‘Industrialization saved the Welsh language.’ Discuss. By the mid-18th century, industrialisation closely followed by its unavoidable companion, urbanization had collided with Britain and continued to expand into the 19th and 20th centuries. The scale of the industrial revolution led to an amount of migration and indeed, immigration that had never occurred in Britain before. Pouring its way into the heart of Wales itself, the industrial development transported the English language into the Welsh valleys and forever left its impressions within the lands of the idyllic principality. Historians and researchers have encouraged many debates about whether the industrial revolution had a positive or negative effect on the Welsh language and these debates will undoubtedly last as long as the Welsh language itself. In order to fully comprehend the effects that industrialisation had on the Welsh language, one must first go back and understand what the Welsh language was before industrialisation. In 1801, the majority of Welsh people spoke Welsh, 90%, and 70% of these Welsh speakers were ‘monoglot’ Welsh who spoke only in the common tongue and knew no English. During the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, these figures were radically altered due a massive, 135% population increase from 1545 to 1801. However, depleting almost as quickly as they grew, these figures began their notable inclination as industrialisation began to perpetually inhibit the Welsh land. Welsh......

Can Marriage Be Saved?

...Can Marriage be Saved? By: Frank Furstenberg April 9, 2013 Frank Furstenberg, Zellerback Family Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote an article titled “Can Marriage Be Saved?” This article was first published in Dissent Magazine, in the summer of 2005, appearing on pages 76-80. It seems to me the question to be answered is in the title itself; can marriage be saved? And if so, then how can we as accomplish this goal successfully? This article clearly talks about the institution of marriage as a whole in our society. But, I think Furstenberg would not only want us to think of marriage as a whole part of our society, but also as individuals. I was especially interested in this article when reading about the differences in marriage in relation to time. The comparison between marriage today and marriage in the 1950’s really made me think. Even the fact that there was a divergence in marriage from the 1950’s to the 1960’s shocked me. And then I wondered, “What was so different about marriage in the 50’s?” For one, divorce was frowned upon in society. Couples still acquired divorces; however, the divorce rate was much lower than it is today. I think the reasoning behind this is; during the 60’s and 70’s, women began thinking more about careers and less about marriage and children. They were less concerned with a nuclear family which consists of a two-parent biological family. “Only in the 1950’s – and then only for a very brief time – did it......

Three Estates of Saved

...“Three Estates:” the Truly Saved; the Invisible Saved; the Unsaved Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx L33333333 Liberty University Given the task of placing our modern day, contemporary western society into three distinct groups is a challenge. When I think of the number three, many things come to mine. Being a huge baseball fan I think of one of my all-time favorite players, Dale Murphy. I also remember one of the most popular and well known players as well, Babe Ruth. Turning away from baseball, I begin to look at things that are in groups of three. I begin to picture groups of people and animals such as, the three musketeers, the three stooges, three blind mice, and the always popular three monkeys of; see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil. This lead me to the question of how do I defeat evil? There is so much evil in our world today, it makes me shutter of some of the sights I have laid my eyes on during my life. These thoughts take me directly to the Bible. The Word of God is the single best weapon against evil we can turn to! The most significance of the number three is all knowing, all seeing, and all doing. Yes, I am speaking of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I cannot use these as my three modern estates, for they are in reality, one! This led me to my next question; what do the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit do for us? Answer: they love us, they care for us, they forgive us, and they want us to be part of......

...11), the following GE Matrix is drawn up to show the likelihood of the following market outcomes: Figure 11: GE Matrix showing international market approach The above graph was plotted based on information and the following criteria – Available resources, effective use of resources for maximum milking, potential business this market can bring in for the company, potential establishment of market leader Based on the above, the implications and resulting suggested approach is:  Asia – A strong defense strategy. Manufacturing in Asia is relatively cheap, hence the recommendation to put efforts into R&D of materials, manufacturing and work closely with suppliers and manufacturers to keep costs low, for higher profit margins. 1  USA’s market is attractive, however competition is stiff with GM and Ford. Toyota needs to increase positive consumer perceptions to push sales and establish itself as a market leader.  Latin America is a growing market with an unstable and undominated automotive industry. Toyota can choose selective markets or products and use an S-O to attack the market and establish presence. This strategy can apply to Africa too, with an added advantage that Africa is geographically closer to manufacturing plants in Asia.  Europe has seen a fall in the automotive industry and Toyota not even being in the top 3 should consider focusing only on cash cows and milk them. Middle Class

...Most Americans live in the middle class. I live in the middle class, my friends live in the middle class, and my teachers live in the middle class. The middle class are divided into three parts: the upper middle class, the mid-middle class and the lower middle class. What divides us all is, the amount of money we make. However, we count on each other to survive. The way that the economy is suffering is affecting us all. The state that the economy is in won’t let Americans change their status and have a better life than they were raised with. The Middle Class in the United States is suffering, they are the 99% of Americans that have to work to survive in America, usually children in the middle class don’t get to go to different classes. In paragraph 2 it’s states, “It said that we are becoming a society in which the poor tend to stay poor, no matter how hard they work.” This is true to most citizens in the United States and even other countries. There are only a few people that either: go above the middle class, go to the lower class, or in the lower class and just get up to the middle class. In paragraph 10 is states, “Very few children of the lower class are making their way to even moderate affluence. This goes along with other studies indicating that rags-to-riches stories have become vanishingly rare, and that the correlation between fathers' and sons' incomes has risen in recent decades. In modern America, it seems, you're quite likely to stay in the social and economic...

Being Saved

...Roman Road to Salvation The ROMANS ROAD....is a pathway you can walk. It is a group of Bible verses from the book of Romans in the New Testament. If you walk down this road you will end up understanding how to be saved. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." We all have sin in our hearts. We all were born with sin. We were born under the power of sin's control. - Admit that you are a sinner. Romans 6:23a "For the wages of sin is death..." Sin has an ending. It results in death. We all face physical death, which is a result of sin. But a worse death is spiritual death that alienates us from God, and will last for all eternity. The Bible teaches that there is a place called the Lake of Fire where lost people will be in torment forever. It is the place where people who are spiritually dead will remain. - Understand that you deserve death for your sin. Romans 6:23b "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Salvation is a free gift from God to you! You can't earn this gift, but you must reach out and receive it. - Ask God to forgive you and save you. Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." When Jesus died on the cross He paid sin's penalty. He paid the price for all sin, and when He took all the sins of the world on Himself on the cross, He bought us out of slavery to sin and death! The only condition is that we believe in Him and what He...

Wwii: the Change That Saved America

...World War II: The Change that Saved America There have been wars throughout the history of man. Some of these wars have been over petty arguments, and some wars have been completely justified in their cause. An example of a just war would most recently be World War II. Not only was WWII considered a good war for the majority of Americans, but it was also beneficial to the minorities of America. The two groups that benefited the most were the African-Americans and women. The main benefits of America as a whole were it pulled the country out of the depression, and it united people through sacrifice and cooperative projects. WWII was also a beneficiary war to the African-Americans and women by increasing their participation in the work force, and also helped to increase their wages. WWII was one of the major factors that helped pull America out of the Great Depression. During the years of World War II the wages of workers was at the highest that it had been since the 1920s (Henretta, et. al. 739). Wages had increased by 70% during this time (Lecture, April 11, 2013). Even though these extra wages were mostly gained by workers working overtime in the shipyards and military factories, it was still money that people had not had in twenty years (Henretta, et. al. 739). Because of all of the overtime working in the factories, manufacturing doubled (Lecture, April 11, 2013). A secondary effect of people having more money was that they were willing to spend it on more......

Saved by the Bell

...Nathan Gracie Professor. Stobnicke English 103-018 October 3rd, 2014 “Saved By the Bell” Five days a week I am awaken by the buzzing sound of my alarm clock at 7 AM. As I struggle to roll out of bed, I know that I have to because it is a process for me to get ready for class on time. When I build up enough energy to jump out of bed I start my daily routine. Opening up my closet and drawers to find something to wear for class has to be the hardest part of this whole process. As I look through several shirts and jeans I am stuck on deciding what to wear. I don’t know if I should put on a sweater for the cold mornings and warm afternoons or a long sleeve t-shirt. Also I have to decide if the jeans or sweatpants go with the top I have choose to wear. Then I have to decide what sneakers I should wear with the top and bottoms I have picked out after about 10 minutes. Making sure everything is colored coordinated is one of my main concerns about the outfit I pick out in the morning. Then occasionally, when I do not have a haircut I must also look for a baseball cap to match what I have picked out to wear and if I can’t find one I have to choose a new outfit. After I am finally finished finalizing my outfit for the day I grab my towel, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste and head straight towards the shower hoping that the bathroom isn’t occupied. A warm morning shower is always a very important time of the day for me. It wakes me up fully and prepares me to start my......

Hip-Hop Saved Me

...Mehtab S. Dhaliwal Georgia M. Roberts B CUSP 117D 03 March 2012 “…I feel like murder but hip-hop you saved me…” (Lupe Fiasco) But what is Hip Hop? No one really has a concrete classification for this term, though many have their own opinions on what the culture of Hip Hop is. Some view the culture of Hip Hop as a door into a different culture, something one has never experienced first hand. While others claim that “…hip hop is primarily responsible for every decline and crisis world-wide except the war in Iraq and global warming…” (Rose) because of the negative influences it has on many people. Numerous parents believe their children shouldn’t be listening to this type of music due to the explicit lyrics. There are countless opinions of what Hip Hop means, but no one really converses about one actual definition. To me, Hip Hop is a way for people to express their opinions and experiences within their music. Hip Hop is distorted throughout history. It originated in the streets of New York City during the late 60’s early 70’s, specifically in the Bronx. Back then it was just a style of poetry, like a type of freestyle that young black men performed. Quickly this style started to become popular and the black youth began “…engaging in verbal duels with contenders like a linguistic match…” (Gates). Due to the geographic location of this formation of Hip Hop, it is considered a “black art form”. Other ethnicities such as the Caribbean and Latin peoples probably......

Can This Bookstore Be Saved

...relevant, in the terms of changing technology in the bookselling market, Barnes and Noble began to float towards a more digital ecosystem and in 2009, introduced the first “Nook E Reader” this officially marked the first time an e- ink display screen has a small color LCD, the nook has several similarities as the Kindle and Sony devices, what separated it from the rest was that it allowed use of the color touchscreen to navigate between the menus and view everything in full color (Kozlowski, 2012). The nooks were able to connect to a wireless service and had 35 and therefore the books were accessible at any time and place. E books make up 20 per cent of the entire book market. Book publishers across the United States have been doing all they can do in order to support Barnes and Noble and help it stay afloat, this is for the reason that the effective marketing and selling of books by publishers depends solely on the survival of physical book retailers. (Laudon & Laudon, 2014). Publishers and booksellers believe that Amazon is trying to drive them out of business. Amazon was rumored to be in talks of starting a publishing company; this would attract major publishers to the company, and therefore take over retailing as well as the publishing of books. Barnes and Noble reacted and decided to not carry any books published by Amazon. (Neary, 2013). Barnes and Noble Industry analysis according to porters five forces indicates that it has a low barrier to entry as there are......

Middle Adulthood

...Middle Adulthood Jamika Golden Mercer University Middle Adulthood According to Rathus (2016), Middle Adulthood spans from ages 40 to 65. Although we may mature at different rates, our physical rates can be reversed in some cases with diet and exercise. In this stage, people go through many physical changes such as hearing and hair loss graying of hair, vision changes, and wrinkling of skin just to name a few. Middle-agers are more susceptible to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, and diabetes. In mid-life there is a decline in vision, many gain weight, and reduce in height. Some men develop sexual dysfunctions while women go through menopause or what is also called the change in life. The menopause transition commonly takes place between 46 and 50 years old. Symptoms vary from person to person and/or region to region. According to a study conducted on menopause in Australia and Japan, the women menopausal symptoms had many differences. Most of the Australians had symptoms of night sweats while the Japanese women reported anxiety and nervousness as their main issues. On the other hand, the regional studies showed a significant increase in depression and hot flashes across the board. Meanwhile, both regions did not show major differences in being excitable, difficulty in concentration, feeling tired or lacking energy.(Anderson, D .J, Yoshizawa, T, Gollshewski S.E, Sara E.A, Fumi.C Mary D;2004) Although this may be true studying middle......

Middle Childhood

...Middle Childhood and Adolescence University of Phoenix Human Growth and Development Jeanette Merchant August 17, 2010 Middle Childhood and Adolescence Stable and supportive families are crucial during middle childhood and adolescence development stage. Supportive family members and friends improve social development. The major change that occurs from middle childhood to adolescence is emotional maturation. During middle childhood stage, children develop more independence from parents and family. They understand more and can differentiate between right and wrong. Children at this age give more attention to friendship and teamwork, but continue to be strongly influence by their parents’ judgment. Their also yearn for love and acceptation from family and friends. They have ability to experience and describe feelings and thoughts with parents and friends. Middle childhood is a time when children develop social relationships. The social skills learned through family and peers give them ability to participate in meaningful communication that later provide foundation for challenges as adolescence. This improves their relationship and encourages them to be successful in future. As children enter adolescence stage, they begin to spend more unsupervised time with friends and other peers than they had before. They spend less time with their parents and family members. Their distance themselves emotionally from parents. Adolescents are exploring different......

...Load a limited-function IOS if the configuration register’s last hex digit is set to 0 or 1. 2. Load an IOS based on the configuration of boot system commands in the startup-configuration file. 3. Load the first file in flash as the IOS. 4. Use TFTP broadcasts to find a TFTP server and download an IOS from that server. 5. Load a limited-function IOS from ROM. In Step 1, the configuration register is a16-bit number that Cisco routers store in a hidden area of NVRAM. It can be set in a couple of ways and can be seen using the show version command. The most commonly used way to set its value is to use the config-register global configuration command. Routers use the 4 low-order bits of the configuration register as the boot field, which tells the router what to do in the first of the preceding five decision steps. If the value of the field is set to 0, the router loads the ROMMON (ROM Monitor), which is used for password recovery. If the value is set to1, the router loads the Boot ROM or RX Boot, which can be used to copy a new IOS into flash. If the value is set to anything between 2 and F, the router proceeds to Step 2. In Step 2, the router looks in the startup-config file for any boot system commands and loads the IOS file listed. If multiple commands are configured, the router tries each of them sequentially. If no boot system commands exist or all fail, the router proceeds to Step 3. In Step 3, the router loads the first IOS listed in flash memory. In Step......
