In the world we live in today, many people growing up in modern America are sheltered behind the wealth that hides the uncomfortable expectancies and dulls the long term effects of hardship. The conclusion of “hunger” is evident even in our pampered lives; however, it holds a much more significant meaning in the lives touched by the grim fingers of poverty, defeat, and in these next few cases, racial discrimination. Whether it is hunger for food, knowledge, acceptance, or for love, hunger is everywhere, and harshly attacks everyone, young or old, black or white. In Black Boy, Do the Right Thing, and Color of Fear, we encounter people that suffer from hunger for love, knowledge, acceptance, and for what they believe is the right thing through the different circumstances they face.
In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, Richard faces not only physical hunger, but also the hunger for love, acceptance, equality, and knowledge. He yearns for attention from people. Since Richard received little at home, he did not learn how to associate with others. In the end, this provoked a problem when he leaves home because he was unable to understand the friendliness of the new people he came across. “Nevertheless, I was so starved for association with people that I allowed myself to be seduced by it all, and for a few months I lived the life of an optimist.” (178) Since Richard’s home was a hostile environment, we often find him yearning for love from others but not knowing how to handle those situations. This side of Richard shows how we hungers for love and compassion from others, even though he is unaware how to respond to it. Through the different people he comes across he strives to learn to grow and eventually appreciate the little things that comes his way.

Black Boy

...“BLACK BOY” This novel focuses on the struggle for identity of a young black boy in the Deep South. It is a powerful testament of Richard Wright’s life which depicts a tale of hope and determination. Richard’s life growing up as an African American in the Jim Crow South, paints for the reader the economic and social struggle that were clichéd for African Americans at the time. It follows young Richard through his youth, examining the hardships and obstacles faced by both him and his poverty-stricken family. Richard’s only thought is to find a haven outside the prison that is his family’s circumstances. Black Boy also shows a hunger in Richard not just for food but for acceptance, love and a sense of understanding about what is happening around him but most importantly he is seeking knowledge. Richard uses writing to explore and expand his mind but Richard discovers through an epiphany that writing will help him break out from the constraining worlds of racism, poverty and family.  Throughout his life, Richard faces the need for a loving family to help and encourage him, but his family in a way, unknowingly help to form his independence. Richard’s family was unable to provide what a family is normally supposed to, which was love, acceptance, and security. Throughout his youth, he faced the need to be independent. Black Boy Analysis

...Struggle for Individuality The autobiography, Black Boy, follows the life of Richard Wright and his experiences as a young African American teenager facing racism in the South. Throughout the novel, Wright focuses on the oppression society inflicts upon him. He finds difficulty in remaining employed because he does not act “black” or submissive enough. He is physically and emotionally attacked for being African American as the majority of the South contains an extremely racist culture. Wright does not even have his family to rely on for support because they criticize and beat him as well. Differences within his family along with incidences of violent attacks and disrespectful language plague Wright and try to deplete his confidence and identity. However, Wright simultaneously finds measures within these aspects to gain back his individuality and happiness. He fights back through violence to uphold his right of walking safely in Memphis; he uses all of his ability to avoid beatings from his family, and he finds joy and sense of worth when he writes stories. Ultimately, Wright struggles to keep his sense of identity in a society that degrades his persona, but manages to obtain his individuality in the end. Through violence, Wright begins to understand that society is laying out a persona for him to accept that is not initially his. Woman in Black Extract Essay

...Analyse Hill’s use of language, form and structure in an extract from ‘The Funeral of Mrs Drablow,’ in her novel; ‘The Woman in Black.’ Show how the narrative development, characterisation and setting are enhanced by her style. Susan Hill’s literary style accords to a pastiche of Victorian Gothic horror. Hill effectively evokes the voice of Victorian era writers using recognisable devices such as; densely detailed text, a sympathetic narrative voice and language that is as lavish as any Victorian tale. The extract I am analysing is taken from the chapter; ‘The Funeral of Mrs Drablow’, and is impediment to the novella, as here, we are first introduced to the character Jeanette Humfrye in an alarming manner by her shocking facade: ‘‘she was suffering from some terrible wasting disease’’ which would unease any reader. Hill uses onomatopoeia and sibilance to introduce her character to us; “Some slight rustle” which draws our attention away from the funeral and onto ‘the young woman with the wasted face’. The phrase ‘slight rustle’ is also used on the following page and concluding tragedy in the final chapter ‘The Woman in Black’, showing an association with the sibilant expression and Jeanette’s presence. Hill uses sibilance in relation to the Woman in Black, because the alveolar pronunciation of the ‘s’ produces a ‘hissing’ sound, which often correlates to cynicism in Gothic Horror. This is a warning sign to the reader and relates us back to Kipps’ prior ominous references......

When there is a detachment of understanding and emotions from the chain of command, Espirit de Corp, motivation, cohesiveness, all the values that are essential to a successful unit, are disregarded. When there is nothing for the core of the group, subordinates are subject to take the easy way out, allowing their frail state of emotions guide them rather than with a moral compass. Poor leadership is peril especially in the Army as it extends so much further than the individual. It affects the squad, unit, and even how the civil public perceives its trusted guardians. In Black Hearts, Jim Frederick depicts a story of four 1st Platoon soldiers that commit one of the most heinous war crimes in U.S. history-the rape of a fourteen-year-old Iraqi girl and the cold-blooded execution of her and her family. It is hard to believe that such an abhorrent event could occur under the command of well-experienced and decorated leaders that so many soldiers have entrusted their lives with. Frederick does an excellent job depicting a well-rounded story, taking into fact all accounts of the story, integrating both the perspectives of leaders and subordinates that display how much of an impact poor leadership can have on others, including the lives of the innocent civilians. That is one of the themes David Nicholls presents in the short story Every Good Boy, which is about a young man who gets pressured by his family to find his talent. In the movie and the book "About a boy" a lot of ​different developments are looked into, and brought up in all sorts of ways. This happens most often through the two main characters' life and everyday. The movie and the book use multiple viewpoints. The story is told by only one character at a time, but the viewpoint switches between the two main characters throughout the course of the movie and the book. In every chapter of the book it changes from Marcus viewpoint to Will’s, and in the movie it changes when we as viewer follows Marcus’s actions to Will’s. We know what Marcus and Will thinks, which gives us a perspective from several different angles and in this case keeps the story fresh and exciting. The author has done an incredibly good job, as he has managed not to lose the viewer/reader through the multiple viewpoints, and that is because the transitions are well done. The narrator is a 3rd person narrator and it is character-bounded to Marcus and Will. In the movie and the book, there are two main characters – Marcus and Will, who both are round characters because they develop much though the story. The reader is introduced to three slaves: Martha, Mikey and Tommy. ...of Wrights judgment differing from that of an individual who was well aware of racism and its biases is when Wright is informed that a "black" boy was severely beaten by a "white" man. almost instantly Wright assumes that the man is the boy's father and sees nothing wrong, but after his mother tells him that the man and boy has no relations Wright is left baffled and has more questions about the "white" people (23-24).
