Being a man by Paul Theroux

Paul Theroux is an American writer and novelist. He has wrote many stories and essays. One essay he is famous for is called “Being a Man”. In “Being a Man” he talks about his point of view of his life from when he was a little boy to being a man, and also he talks about his insecurity of being a man. In the essay he says: “everything in stereotyped manliness goes against the life of the mind”. This quote is true because this is what is stereotyped everyday.

Theroux tells us that America's view of "Being a Man" means to be stupid, obedient, and soldierly. This idea goes against everything that Theroux is. Theroux has many examples that back up his belief ."In paragraph nine he says “everything in stereotyped manliness goes against the life of the mind”. This means that writing is not a manly behavior. Theroux believed the idea which is why he hates being a man.Theroux goes into detail about how sports harms little boys and how it make boys every violent."Just as high school basketball teaches you how to be a poor loser, the manly attitude toward sports seems to be little more than a recipe for creating bad marriages, social misfits, moral degenerates, sadists, latent rapists and just plain louts I regard high school sports as a drug far worse then marijuana.."

I have witnessed two experience similar to Theroux. One was when I was in the 3rd grade. My teacher had gave the class an assignment to do. We either had to write a peom nature or make a picture collage of nature. Most of the girls chose the poem and all the boys did the collage expect for 2 boys. Those 2 boys did the poem. When the other boys found out that they were doing the poem they kept on teasing them and kept calling them “girly girls”

Another experience I witness was in the 5th grade. The teacher has asked us what we wanted to be when we grow up. Most of…...

Being There

...Being There Being there is about a man named Chance, who is isolated from the outside of the old man's estate, getting his knowledge from watching television and taking care of the garden. He is around 40 years old, stupid and illiterate. He doesn't have any social skills, so he just talks about the garden. When the old man dies the lawyers who handle the estate can't find any evidence that chance has lived there, he is thrown out of the house. When he is on the street he is run over by a limo, and hurt his leg. The woman in the limo, named Elisabeth Eve Rand, apologized and asked him to come home to her, she had a doctor staying at her house, because her husband was very ill. Chance accepts, and goes with her. EE's husband, Benjamin, is a wealthy businessman, and a friend of The President. EE and Benjamin are fooled to think that Chance's name is Chauncey Gardiner and he is a wealthy businessman because of his look when he is in the old man's suit. Chance and Mr. Rand then become friends, and when Mr. Rand couldn't go to a meeting, because of his illness, The President was coming to visit him and Rand wanted Chance to meet him. When chance is asked about something financial he answers by talking about a garden, and everyone thinks he is metaphorically speaking, when actually he's just answering with the few things he has learned in his life. So it goes with Chauncey talking nonsense to a lot of people including The President of the United States, a television......

The Young Man and the Old Man

...the Bible, David was a young man who, using only a slingshot and five rocks struck down the giant Goliath and saved his people. David has been a symbolic figure in art throughout history. Two men who lived nearly a hundred years apart both sculptured the famous biblical figure of David through the lens of his own times but they were both influenced by many of the same things. Michelangelo showed David as a symbol of courage in the face of the enemy while Donatello depicted David as a symbol what can be accomplished by even the smallest entity. His character and story have been interpreted and re-interpreted by many artists in different mediums. Donatello was was born in Florence in 1386. He was an early Renaissance artist who lived at the end of the Dark Ages. He is known as the artist whose work officially began the Italian Renaissance (“David”). Donatello was first introduced to Roman sculpture when he visited Rome with his master, Brunelleschi (“Donatello”). It was there that he carefully studied classical Roman sculptures. The studies he preformed in Rome greatly influenced him the rest of his life. He is known for making the first sculptures with classical influence after the Dark Ages. The influence of his Roman studies is shown in the natural flow of the statue, something which is not seen in any art of the Dark Ages. Michelangelo was born to a middle class banking family on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. When he was still a young man, his mother become......

...artists on the entire planet. Her songs, music videos, the way she dresses, and even the way she acts keeps everyone interested and guessing on what in the world she is going to do next. She is famous not only because her songs and her music is so good, even though it is, but also because she is so interesting to follow as a person and she really tells it how it is. In a recent interview Gaga was asked if she does do illegal substances at all and she stated that she had to be honest and come clean to the fact that she does smoke Marijuana on occasion because she feels it helps her connect on a deeper level with music and that she doesn’t want to lie to her fans about it, and she also doesn’t want to condone the use of the drug. Besides being a great singer, stylist, and dancer Lady Gaga also does more than her fair part of community service. Gaga partnered with Virgin Mobile offering VIP tickets to fans who volunteer their time to homeless youth organizations, which raised more than $80,000 to support homeless kids, and created 30,000 hours of community service for hundreds of charities across the country. She also is partnered with the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) where she always volunteers time to talk with and hang out with kids. So not only does her music stray from the mainstream pop music culture but the way she used her music and shows to inspire people to volunteer there time to charities is just ingenious. Lady Gaga is just so out there and......

A Man

...A shirtless young man stares out past the camera as if he is looking at the logo above his head. He needlessly clings to the rock to further accentuate his impressive body structure. The logo above his head reads “DOLCE & GABBANA” in a bold semi-transparent font. A small bottle of something is juxtaposed to his left. It is the item they are trying to sell, a sports cologne. This advertisement is very effective because of the use of ethos and pathos. Although those two parts are heavily used in this ad, logos is not present as much. Even with that being said many people are going to buy this particular cologne based on ethos and pathos. This is true because Dolce and Gabbana is a very well-known company, which plays a huge part in ethos with credibility and authority. Pathos is also used heavily with people wanting to look like that or women wanting their men to look like that; this makes the reader believe that if they wear this cologne women will be more attracted to them, and that they, too, can look as good as the model in the ad. This advertisement was featured in Muscle & Fitness magazine. This particular magazine is aimed towards classy young to middle-aged men who are professionals. This can be seen through the contents in the magazine. The magazine has lots of ads that are of watches, cologne, and nice cars. With that being said we do not believe that this magazine is geared toward younger teenage men because of what ads, pictures and articles in the......

A Man Is a Man

...A Short Essay A Man is a Man, A Woman is a Woman Tabitha Ponder Ashford University ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Professor Carla McGill February 4, 2013 A Man is a Man, A Woman is A Woman Some may say that a man is a man and a woman is a woman; and they should stay in there prospective places at all costs. Gender roles can sometimes be reversed. Specifically, I am going to address the gender reversal in marriage. Several factors may contribute to role (gender) reversal. It depends on the personality of the individuals involved, and how they learn to interact with one another (or not). Also, a change in circumstances or a chain of events can force a gender role reversal. For example, the husband may get hurt on the job and now the wife who is accustomed to staying home with the kids now is forced to go out and provide for the family. Let’s define gender roles within a traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Traditionally, the husband is the one who provides for the family financially. He is the bread winner. Because he is the bread winner, normally he is the final voice of authority in the home concerning any issues that may arise. The wife is the one who is the caregiver. The wife is the nurturer; she takes care of the children and the husband too! She is also takes care of the affairs of the home. The depth of most people’s belief in gender-role stereotypes is often overlooked. A husband may have the......

...So yes we can learn it, it is just the matter of taking it all in and really using it in ways that we work. I also think that everyone is emotionally intelligent in their own way and how we decide to use it or when is entirely up to us as adults. What are the personal characteristics that you believe would contribute to the success of leaders? I feel that in order to be a successful leader you have to want to be in that particular position. I think that in order to be a good leader you have to have listening skills, be fair, and know what you are doing. I have seen too many people in leadership positions that cannot handle the pressure or their own employees. I think that being a good listener is something that employees want so that if they have any problems they can express them and be heard. Being fair to all employees is something else that you have to do. You cannot show favoritism because you like one person better or be mean to someone that you do not like. It will not go over well if you are mistreating your employees. Lastly, you need to know what you are doing as far as your job goes. Too many people get into positions and fail to actually learn the job the correct way. Employees can see that a mile away and really hurt your career progression. I have seen too many take on a leadership role and cannot perform up to the optimum level of a leader. One other thing that bothers me is how our leaders will walk around and talk about everyone behind their back and then...

...Essays are generally scholarly pieces of writing giving the author's own argument, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article, a pamphlet and a short story. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions. An essay has been...

...generates far more corona emissions than a larger area. The increased corona emission almost prevents lightning from traveling the directed path. In the case of the blunt rod, the lesser emissions provided a desired path for the lightning to travel down. A lot of research was put in to find the ideal tip shape for lightning rods, and it was determined that the increased surface area directly correlates to how strong the electric field is at the tip of the lightning air terminal (LAT). Introduction: It is a beautiful and deadly natural occurrences. With a shock of several million volts per strike, and the capability to reach temperatures between fifteen-thousand and sixty-thousand degrees, lighting is one of the most powerful forces known to man. With all of that power lightning can cause a lot of damage. In North America lightning damage to equipment results in losses exceeding twenty-six billion dollars annually. Lightning strikes the ground around 8.6 million times a day making it nearly impossible to avoid, no matter where you live. A great deal of effort is put into protecting people and property from lighting strikes. One of the simplest and best known devices developed for lightning protection is the lightning rod. A lightning rod is a small metal rod that is normally attached to a high elevated structure. The rod is then connected to a wire that runs down the side of the building into a conductive grid. It is a common misconception that lightning rods attract......

Being Frugal vs Being Cheap

...Being Frugal VS Being Cheap Many people hear the word frugal and they think it means being cheap but being frugal doesn’t mean being cheap. Being frugal means caring about your money, and trying not to waste it. It means valuing your money, getting the most from it and being smart about how and where you spend it. In behavioral science, frugality has been defined as the tendency to acquire goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourceful use of already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal. Frugality may contribute to health by leading people to avoid products that are both expensive and unhealthy when used to excess. Frugal living is mainly practiced by those who aim to cut expenses, have more money, and get the most they possibly can from their money. Different spiritual communities consider frugality to be a virtue or a spiritual discipline. The basic philosophy behind this is the idea that people ought to save money in order to allocate it to more charitable purposes, such as helping others in need. There are also environmentalists who consider frugality to be a virtue through which humans can make use of their ancestral skills as hunter-gatherers, carrying little and needing little, and finding meaning in nature instead of man-made conventions or religion. Cheapness is a lot different from frugality. Cheapness is when you have enough money but you still refuse to spend money on things such as not wanting to leave a tip at a......

Being Good

...“Being good person is like being a goal keeper: no matter how many goals you save, some people will remember only the one that they missed” Human being must obtain different goals in life. You must to be chosen in being good, perfect and excellent. Three characteristics that consists various meanings. It is a leveled characteristic from high to the highest. Being good is the ability to show that he must know to do something. It is he has the ability to open himself in every new opportunity. His willingness to learn and grow in his own way. It is indeed that openness is necessity due to the rapid change of technology. For Socrates, being good is enough though you have the ability to get more ideas out of your head into action. An exemption for this is human being is free to ask helps from others. It doesn’t mean that asking for help is a sign of weakness rather it helps to save time and lead to better end result. Good is differing from being perfect and being good done ashamed to commit mistakes. Though, you do so many things right you cannot move forward without looking back. There will always be good in the world if you decided to do right. Committing mistakes is pathway leading you to be perfect. “Being perfect doesn’t mean everything is perfect, it means that you decided to look beyond those imperfections” It is hard to act that you’re perfect. “Nobody is perfect”, that is how this quotation explains everything. Man is born to be real not to be perfect. Yet, no man......

...The Moose and the Sparrow Hugh Garner From the very beginning Moose Maddon picked on him. The kid was bait for all of Maddon's cruel practical jokes around the camp. He was sent back to the tool-house for left-handed saws, and down to the office to ask the pay cheater if the day's mail was in, though the rest of us knew it was only flown out every week. The kid's name was Cecil, and Maddon used to mouth it with a simpering mockery, as if it pointed to the kid being something less than a man. I must admit though that the name fitted him, for Cecil was the least likely lumberjack I've seen in over twenty-five years in lumber camps. Though we knew he was intelligent enough, and a man too, if smaller than most of us, we all kidded him, in the good natured way a bunkhouse gang will. Maddon however always lisped the kid's name as if it belonged to a woman. Moose Maddon was as different from Cecil as it is possible for two human beings to be and still stay within the species. He was a big moose of a man, even for a lumber stiff, with a round flat unshaven face that looked down angrily and dourly at the world. Cecil on the other hand was hardly taller than an axe-handle, and almost as thin. He was about nineteen years old, with the looks of an inquisitive sparrow behind his thick horn-rimmed glasses. He had been sent out to the camp for the summer months by an distant relative who had a connection with the head office down in Vancouver. That summer we were cutting big stuff......

...created new acronyms to be used on the Internet such as in discussion boards or blogs. Examples of acronyms contain: ‘FYI’ (which stands for ‘for your information’), ‘TMI’ (which stands for ‘too much information’), ‘BRB’ (which stands for be right back) and ‘TTYL’ (which stands for ‘talk to you later’). As a result, these new acronyms have caused students’ English proficiency to deteriorate. The spread of the recently created acronyms have been incorporated into students’ writings which therefore gives the teachers a harder time of ‘reiterating’ the importance of being able to distinguish between the ‘social networking language’ and ‘academic writing’ This means that the students might later suffer in university when it comes to writing a professional report in their field of interest. In the meantime, the effect of adolescents using up-to-date smartphones has given more evidence to linguists on how the English language is being misused. From the beginning, students are starting to make more unintended grammatical errors in their writing assignments at school. The cause of students increasingly making more errors in schoolwork is directly related to text messages that are becoming more popular among smartphone users. Examples of messaging applications include ‘LINE’, ‘Whatsapp’,....

...unhappy, God's unjust; If man alone engross not Heav'n's high care, Alone made perfect here, immortal there: Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod, Rejudge his justice, be the God of God. In pride, in reas'ning pride, our error lies; All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, Men would be angels, angels would be gods. Aspiring to be gods, if angels fell, Aspiring to be angels, men rebel: And who but wishes to invert the laws Of order, sins against th' Eternal Cause. V. Ask for what end the heav'nly bodies shine, Earth for whose use? Pride answers, " 'Tis for mine: For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb, and spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Annual for me, the grape, the rose renew, The juice nectareous, and the balmy dew; For me, the mine a thousand treasures brings; For me, health gushes from a thousand springs; Seas roll to waft me, suns to light me rise; My foot-stool earth, my canopy the skies." But errs not Nature from this gracious end, From burning suns when livid deaths descend, When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? "No, ('tis replied) the first Almighty Cause Acts not by partial, but by gen'ral laws; Th' exceptions few; some change since all began: And what created perfect?"—Why then man? If the great end be human happiness, Then Nature deviates; and can man do less? As......
