hile commenting on the author's article "3 simple rules of marital disharmony"1 an astrologer friend asked the author: "By using the rules given in your article one can see whether a person is prone to tension in his or her married life or not. If the native has combinations in his or her chart which indicate a troublesome married life the solution you have suggested is to match the charts. But the problem is that we usually use "Guna Milan" method and this method doesn’t give correct results all the time. There are charts where the number of points (Gunas) that are matching are very high but the married life is miserable or there is separation; and there are charts where number of points (Gunas) that are matching are very low and there are doshas like Nadi dosh, Gana dosh etc. but the couple is leading a very harmonious and blissful

married life. What use is it then to know whether there are tension points in the persons chart or not, if there is no good method for matching the two charts." It is in response to this that the present article is presented. In this context the author would like to draw the attention of the readers to…...

Amazing Astrology

...Our observations from the Earth help us figure out what's going on in the universe. Discuss one of the topics brought up in our second chapter. What kinds of things are 'regular' that we can see? What things are irregular? Did anything surprise you? Everything in the second chapter is again amazing. We see many things in the sky, but never really think about the changes that occur. We see many constellations and at times of the year we see different constellations as the earth rotates. Some things that we see regularly throughout the year in the northern hemisphere are the circumpolar stars like the north star and those contained in the big and little dipper. One thing that I find to be quite fascinating is that the earth actually wobbles like a top, although it is unrecognizable to us because it occurs very slowly. I was surprised to learn that the sun was once part of the constellation cancer a few thousand years ago, but now it has become part of the Gemini constellation. Gravity itself is an amazing magnetic pull. Every year we also regularly experience seasons as the earth rotates, but one thing that surprised me was to learn that even in the lower hemisphere it is still called the Summer solstice although it is winter there, mainly because the seasons were named from astronomers in the northern hemisphere. Another irregular thing that we experience on earth is an eclipse. I have always found eclipses fascinating and don’t remember seeing a total solar eclipse......

Astronomy or Astrology

...Astronomy or Astrology? Have you ever finally just gave in to the temptation and read your horoscope in the newspaper on Sunday morning? Sure, we all have. For most of us, itís a curiosity, an amusement to see what they say our day will be like based on the sign of the zodiac that we were born under. Sometimes we forget that this little diversion is actually part of an ancient science called astrology that has had a powerful effect on many cultures dating back to centuries before Christ. That is not to say that astrology is a dead art today. It is easy to find astrology advocates in every town, advertising in the newspaper and on television trying to convince us that they can tell our fortune, our future and help cure our ills by exploring the mysteries of astrology. When you are a lover of astronomy, the confusion between astronomy and astrology by those who donít really understand the differences can get pretty aggravating. And in early civilizations, the two disciplines were not separate. Astrology was just the religious side of the science of astronomy. So what changed? The most significant shift that set in motion the separation of the two lines of thought began in the first century when Ptolemy wrote the very first book on astronomy called the Tetrabiblos. In it, he began to suggest that astronomy should be considered a separate science from astrology. It was quite a revolutionary book because it also was the first scientific document to suggest that...

Claudius Ptolemy

...Claudius Ptolemy is a famous ancient scholar.Ptolemy is famous for his works and specialization in astronomy, geography, cartography, mathematics, and astrology. His works range from the Almagest, a series of thirteen books dedicated to astronomy. The use of mathematics to was used to prove his theories and observations of an Earth-centered universe. His works on astronomy, such as the Geocentric model, are well renowned for their Earth-centered theories. Ptolemy’s theories and works lasted for thousands of years until astronomers such as Galileo, Copernicus, and Kepler came into the picture to test their theories against the longstanding theory of Ptolemy’s geocentric model. Not only was Ptolemy famous for his works on astronomy and the Almagest but the famous Greek was also fond of astrology from a scientific view point. Astrology was an important study back in ancient Greece and Ptolemy’s skills did not leave that off of his knowledge. He published one of the most famous books in astrology named the Tetrabiblos. The addition of the Geographia by Ptolemy himself allowed the Greeks to excel their understanding of their environments geography. Claudius Ptolemy was born in Alexandria, Egypt around 90 AD. Some information differs on the originality of the name Ptolemy. For example, the name Ptolemy was a common name in ancient Greece. “Claudius” came from the first Roman rule of Egypt as a common name. Following the lost of Roman rule, Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian general......

...The Autobytel Story Autobytel ( customers accounted for 1 in every 20 dollars spent on new cars last year. The company even turned a profit. If you think car dealers are a pain, try working with car buyers. If buyers see the stereotypical dealer as a hustler who is partial to false promises and esoteric pricing, the dealer sees the typical customer as a grouchy opportunist who will dicker for an entire afternoon, then take a quote down the street to see if a rival dealer can beat it. A service that aims to please both of these groups might seem like a dubious business model. But Autobytel, a seven-year-old online car-buying referral service, has mastered the balancing act. Generating roughly $17 billion in car sales annually – or 5 percent of total U.S. volume – Autobytel’s network embraces 8,800 dealers, 10 million customers, and four Web sites:,,, and It is nearly twice as large as its nearest rival, Microsoft’s Autobytel’s secret to success it that it makes life easier for dealers rather than trying to replace them. Customers who want an Autobytel referral must disclose their names, addresses, and payment method; in return, they get a price quote from a local dealer. To separate tire-kickers from serious buyers, Autobytel’s proprietary 26-step screening process verifies everything from area codes to the age of each potential buyer. Historically, dealers close about 12......

Essay on Astrology

...Williams Susan Lowman-Thomas English 101 6 September 2015 The Truth about Astrology Astrology has been in existence for centuries, and its controversy over its relevance. The history of astrology began with the Babylonians, they are credited for the creation of astrology. Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and coming celestial events. Astrology was also used to bring a sense of order out of apparent chaos, it was soon utilized to predict weather patterns, primarily for agricultural purposes. It was eventually broadened to include forecasts of natural disasters and war and other events in the course of human affairs. Amassing successes in these fields, it was a natural progression for astrology to be used as counsel for kings and emperors and in time, for all of us. “Astrology is one of the most ancient sciences, held in high esteem of old, by the wise and the great. Formerly, no prince would make war or peace, nor any general fight in battle, in short, no important affair was undertaken without first consulting an astrologer."- Benjamin Franklin Character traits of an individual are strongly effected by astrology. Learning in depth information related to astrology can help assist with relating with others. Individuals who have a strong Understanding of Astrological signs tend to have a clear understanding of themselves. When studding the science of Astrology, it very important to know the time of a person’s birth to......

Is Astrology Considered Science?

...Is Astrology Considered Science Philosophy Essay At the first instance, one tends to agree with the contention of the author that astrology is not science because the astrological predictions suffer from deficiencies such as (i) they are not supported by sound and verified scientific research, for e.g., statistical studies, (ii) they are not based upon collected data and carefully controlled objective observations, (iii) they are not based upon falsifiable predictions, which are tested and re-tested, by independent observers and researchers, etc. Hence, astrology does not qualify as a study based on scientific theory because it is neither logically consistent internally (all its predictions must be consistent with each other) nor logically consistent externally (unless there are good reasons, it must be consistent with theories which are already known to be valid). Nevertheless, it may be appreciated that lots of theories in various disciplines don't make common sense either. For instance, Einstein and many other contemporary scientists had proposed all kinds of absurd and seemingly ridiculous ideas such as space is curved, that time is really a fourth dimension and not separate from space, that looking at something alters its position, etc. etc. These ideas also don't make common sense, and sound like the objects of science fiction, but they are taken seriously by scientists not as science fiction but as valid and serious scientific theories. In short, it is not......

Discourse Is in the Stars zodiac signs by Crystal Melbourne, a professional astrologer. I look at her Tumblr blog daily and sometimes multiple times during the day. It wasn’t until two weeks ago when I joined this class that I thought about how it can be categorized as a discourse community. A discourse community is a group of people that share a set of beliefs and understandings. In this essay, that we all as a class are required to write, I will be dissecting the different parts of this Tumblr blog that make it a discourse community. Before going too far into the rhetorical situation of this blog, I will give a little bit of background for those newbies out there who have no clue what astrology or a horoscope is. I will also give you some of the important language that will be found throughout this essay. First off, astrology is the study of the positions and relationships of the sun, moon, stars, and planets in order to judge their influence on human actions. A horoscope is a diagram of the heavens, showing the relative position of planets and the signs of the zodiac, for use in calculating births, foretelling events in a person’s life, etc. Zodiac is an imaginary belt of the heavens, extending about 8° on each side of the ecliptic, within which are the apparent paths of the sun, moon, and principal planets. It contains twelve constellations and hence twelve divisions called signs of the zodiac. The 12 signs of the zodiac are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio,......

Astrology vs Astronomy

...Numerous people confuse astrology with astronomy when they actually have several differences. Mankind's known history of the universe and today's scientific knowledge are ways to tell the two apart. Astronomy is the study of matter outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomy studies the chemical and physical properties of outer space. Astrology also studies the effects of apparent influence of the stars on human life. The position and movement of stars throughout the night sky determine the effects. Although astrology and astronomy both study celestial objects, astronomy is different because astronomy studies the actual bodies and the physical effects their motions have on the Earth and other planets. Before the time of astronomy, most people believe the Earth was flat. Most cultures also believe they were in the center of the universe and all life gravitates around them. Aristarchus is one of the first people to voice his belief that the world revolves around the sun and not the other way around. People ridicule such outrageous remarks, so they disregard Aristarchus’ vision for some time. That is until around the 1500s, when Nicolaus Copernicus creates the first heliocentric model of our solar system. In this model, the sun is not the center of the model, but actually slightly off center towards one side. Galileo is extremely well known in the astronomical world. He introduces the law of time and how objects at such given distances can be easily measured by time. Galileo......

Constellation and Astrology

...around asterisms, patterns formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another on Earth's night sky. * The constellation Orion is one of the most recognizable in the night sky. * There are 88 standard constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) since 1922. The majority of these go back to the 48 constellations defined by Ptolemy in his Almagest (2nd century). The remaining ones were defined in the 17th and 18th century; the most recent ones are found on the southern sky, defined in Coelum australe stelliferum by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (1763). * There are also numerous historical constellations not recognized by the IAU, or constellations recognized in regional traditions of astronomy or astrology, such as Chinese, Hindu or Austral Aboriginal. * Are the Stars in a Constellation near each other? * Not necessarily. Each constellation is a collection of stars that are distributed in space in three dimensions – the stars are all different distances from Earth. The stars in a constellation appear to be in the same plane because we are viewing them from very, very, far away. Stars vary greatly in size, distance from Earth, and temperature. Dimmer stars may be smaller, farther away, or cooler than brighter stars. By the same token, the brightest stars are not necessarily the closest. Of the stars in Cygnus, the swan, the faintest star is the closest and the brightest star is the farthest! * How are......
