A Summer’s Reading

Respect is a very dominant and important factor in the story of
Bernard Malamud, “A Summer’s Reading.” The reach for respect from the people around him causes a lot of dilemma within the main character,
George Stoyonovic. And those dilemmas led to consequences that George hated. George, a high school drop out, can not get any job during one summer. He decides to read the magazines found at home. But when he met Mr. Cattanzara, he immediately lies about the hundred books he is reading, in order for Mr. Cattanzara to respect him as well as to be proud of him.

Respect is a form of acknowledgement of one’s existence. Respect is very important to everybody. Respect also gives a person a sense of confidence that he is not a failure and contradicts the idea that he is not good enough. People want respect because they want others to know how good they are. Though everybody wants it, most people often take it for granted. The irony of it all is that people wants it so much that they would do anything just to get it.

In the story, the theme Respect is very important for everybody was shown a couple of times. An example of these scenes is when George was contemplating whether or not he should attend the night classes. “He has considered registering in a night high school, only he did not like the idea of teachers always telling him what to do. He felt that they had not respected him.” He decides that since he has nothing to do at home, attending night-class would be great and it would help him catch up on the lessons he has missed. But that the idea of teachers telling him what to do causes George to think twice. He thinks that when his teachers tell him what to do or should not do it shows a lack of respect on the teachers’ part. He then feels that he is not good enough and loses confidence in…...

...It was the first day of summer and I was so excited I got to relax until 10:00am. I was woken up by a delicious smell I wasn’t quite sure what it was but it smelled extremely good. “Are you awake?” mom asked. I replied loudly, “Yes mother.” She told me to hurry down because we needed to discuss something. So I gotten up showered, comb my hair, put my clothes on and headed down the stairs. “Morning mom,” I said. Mom was down here all alone cooking breakfast Pancakes, eggs, grits, and sausage. “Yummy,” I said. Everything looked so good because mom always cooked everything she made from scratch. So I got me a small portion of the breakfast and sat at the table. Mom came along and joined me. She explained to me that I’ll be staying with my dad this summer because she have an important job she had to attend. I wasn’t excited about this because I thought this summer was going to be the summer that mom and I was going to be able to spend time together. I had to be understanding because mom was a travel nurse and when hospitals are short of employers they call people like her to come out to work. So she told me after breakfast pack my clothing she was taking me to the airport my plane leave at 4:00pm. Dad stays in Miami, Florida so I had to pack clothing for that type of weather; which it’s always sunny down that way. So I packed all my shorts, tank top shirts, bathing suits, and sandals. Thirty minutes later “Are you ready?” mom called. I wasn’t ready to leave her but I guess......

Summer

...the summer was hot From an astronomical view, the equinoxes and solstices would be the middle of the respective seasons,[1][2] but a variable seasonal lag means that the meteorological start of the season, which is based on average temperature patterns, occurs several weeks later than the start of the astronomical season.[3] According to meteorologists[4][5],summer extends for the whole months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere. Under meteorological definitions, all seasons are arbitrarily set to start at the beginning of a calendar month and end at the end of a month.[6] This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates. The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in Austria, Denmark and the former USSR; it is also used by many in the United Kingdom, where summer is thought of as extending from mid-May to mid-August. In Ireland, the summer months according to the national meteorological service, Met Éireann, are June, July and August. However, according to the Irish Calendar summer begins 1 May and ends 1 August. School textbooks in Ireland follow the cultural norm of summer commencing on 1 May rather than the meteorological definition of 1 June. From the astronomical perspective, days continue to lengthen from equinox to solstice......

...AP English Literature and Composition 2012 Summer Reading Assignment I. DRAMA Oedipus Rex by Sophocles We are not requiring any particular edition of the play; however, we would highly recommend a version which includes supplemental materials/explanations of Greek drama and Greek mythology. Purchase, read, and annotate the play prior to the first day of class. It would be wise to focus your annotation on instances of dramatic irony, images of vision and blindness, and tension between fate and free will. The following literary analysis assignment will be collected during the second week of school. LITERARY ANALYSIS OF DRAMA In a typed, one-page essay, offer your assessment of Oedipus at the end of the play. Was he foolish? Heroic? Fated? Support with textual evidence as appropriate and follow MLA format. II. READING FOR PLEASURE Read a book—fiction or non-fiction—strictly for pleasure. Strong readers and writers have a wealth of textual experiences and a vast amount of background knowledge from which to draw. The most important aspect of this assignment is that you select a work you will enjoy reading. During the first week of class, you will conduct a book talk over your selected work in which you will “sell” the experience of reading your book to your peers, so pick something good! Some suggestions for selecting your “reading for pleasure” book include, but are not limited to: * Classic works of literature from an era, author, or genre......

Summer Reading - Hunger Games

...started to become brave and wasen't scared all of the time. He had gained hope and thought he had a chance to survive the games and get back to his family safe. 3. One of the three most significant and memorable quotes to me is "My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did. This is the day of the reaping." Katniss Everdeen, p. 3. This is rememorable to me because it lets us know how badly Prim Katniss sister felt the day of the reaping and how she seek her mother for protection. It also lets us know that Katniss knows her sister very well and feels really bad for her. The reader after reading that quote will feel and have some sort of reference about how the people of that district felt about the reaping coming around each year. Prim being so young this her first year that she is eligble to particpate in the Hunger Games so she has no idea whats it like to have a chance to be placed into the games. Katniss being older had already been thru the reaping many times and has never been picked so Katniss know's how the reaping works and has more knowledge of how things work. On top of all that she has great skills and abilites even if she gets picked she has a way higher chance to survive then if her sister Prim gets picked. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress...

Summer

...My perfect summer I never imagined a wonderful summer as the one I have spent in Logan. Global Academy 2012 gave me the opportunity to experience the most unforgettable moments of my life. Despite the cultural shock, the lonely I felt at the beginning and all de embarrassing moments I had, Logan have been the perfect place for me to grow as a person, to improve my English, to make new friends, and to become more independent. I just can describe this summer as my best summer ever, my perfect summer. My most memorable moment in Logan was the ropes course because I was doing really challenging things, things that I never thought I could do. After I achieve my goals at the ropes course and overcame all the challenging things I felt a great satisfaction and self-realization. At the beginning I was shock by American culture but as soon as I started understanding it I enjoy every single moment in Logan. I really loved my first academic track excursions. I went to a restaurant in a small town called Ogden and I tried the Mormon Muffin, it was so delicious. I also had a great time at the Independence Day celebration at Rommie Stadium, the fireworks were amazing. I had never seen so many fireworks in one night. I was so amazed and I took a lot of pictures with my camera. These experiences gave me the opportunity of talk with native speakers and improve my English skills. Shopping in Logan is one of the things I enjoyed the most; the clothes, shoes, and almost everything are so...

...Khiree Cross Ap Summer Reading Assignment The Awakening By: Kate Chopin July 18, 2013 Part One The setting of The Awakening so far is in the Grand Isle, a popular place for a summer vacation where wealthy people go. The Grand Isle is a spot where all the wealthy Creoles, from New Orleans, go for the summer to relax, and have fun. The time setting seems to be in the early 1900s because of the things they do and the lack of technology. The husband of Edna, Leonce, go away on a trip and on this trip he sends her chocolates which no one in the present time eats anymore. The tone of The Awakening at the start is a relaxed and peaceful one. As the story progresses is becomes a more serious and emotional one. It is serious because Leonce feels as if his wife is carless for her family. She doesn't show too much love nor is affection towards them and that becoming a problem. It is also emotional because Edna is clueless to what he is talking about and feels bad after he tells her off before he leaves for his trip. She is lost and wants to find her own independence, or find herself. Part Two The three characters that I will characterize from this book are Edna, Madamoiselle, and Robert. Edna is a caring and loving wife and mother. She is married to a rich businessman Leonce who is the provider for their family. In the story so far Edna seems as if she is lost or missing something. She seems tired of the lifestyle she is living and is nonchalant about everything. She likes......

...Mary Amaral Ms. Masso URI Writing 12 August 2014 The Bell Jar- Elements Of Voice Elements of Voice: diction, detail, imagery, syntax, and tone. 1. Diction - Oblog (pg. 3) Diction can be defined as style of speaking or writing determined by the choice of words by a speaker or a writer. Diction or choice of words separates good writing from bad writing. It depends on a number of factors. 2. Detail – “I still have the makeup kit they gave me, filled out for a person with brown eyes and brown hair; an oblog of brown mascara with a tiny brush, anda round basin of blue eye shadow just big enough to dab the tip of your finger in, and three lipsticks ranging from red to pink, all cased in the same little glit bx with a mirror on one side”. Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. This is considered detail and imagery (#3) for the following reasons: * Included observations, color to description, visual imagery, verbal representation of sensory experience, both because you can visualize all of the make up and the colors. - Another example of detail from the book “The Bell Jar” is (pg. 210) “I looked with love at the lineup of waiting trays- the white paper napkins, folded in their crisp, isosceles triangles, each under the anchor of its silver fork, the pale domes of soft-boiled eggs in the blue egg cups, the scalloped glass shells of orange marmalade”. Summer Reading on the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

...have a few faint memories from when I was younger and he would come over to play with me, my brother and a few other friends. One time he was climbing up the monkey bars in my back yard and my brother and his friends were making fun of him because he didn’t know better than one of my brothers friends ran up and pulled his pants down. He got very upset and ran inside but they thought it wouldn’t do anything because he didn’t know better and they did it to him because he was different. He was an outcast because he didn’t look and act like everyone else. Because they thought this they mistreated him. Those are a few ways people mistreat the outcasts of the world. In conclusion to this paper I would have to say the message and point of this reading is treat others how you want to be treated regardless of how they may act or look. Just because they are different doesn’t mean they are less than anyone else....

500days of Summer

...Paper : (500) Days of Summer Have you ever fallen in love or dated someone? If so (500) Days of Summer will appeal to you. It is a Fox Searchlight Pictures production, Marc Webb is the name of the chief director, and the cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom Hansen and Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn. The film was released on 7th August 2009. For some people who have not watched the film, I would strongly recommend them to watch. Regardless of gender, I am sure that anyone who has had an experience of a relationship or love could sincerely sympathize with the story of the film. As the movie progresses, the audience can see emotional growth in Tom, disbelief about destined events, and a change of mind in Summer Finn about love and relationship. The movie starts with the narrator’s saying “this is a story that a boy meets a girl.”, and a scene shows Summer is putting her hand over Tom’s hand and smiling. According to the narrator, Summer is just another girl of average except she wasn’t. Tom meets Summer on January 8th, finding her from 400,000 office buildings, 91,000 commercial buildings and 3.8 million which can be explained by a word, “fate”. When Tom meets Summer on the first day, he feels that Summer is the one who he has been looking for. On the 4th day, Tom meets Summer in elevator and Summer shows an interest in music, she likes Smiths which Tom was listening. On the 8th day, during the company party celebrating Millie’s engagement, Tom and Summer had a......

Summer Reading Essay

...Learning From Mistakes People learn from the past. Either their own or from the people that lived before them. Readers can learn from the literature they read. In “Tess of the D’Urbervilles”, by Thomas Hardy, readers can learn from the actions of the characters. Written in 1891 the roles of women and men are different from what they are now. Readers can see the difference though many of the characters such as Tess Durbeyfield, Angel Clare, Alec D’Urberville, and Joan Durbeyfield. These can be shown through the characters in their relationships, thoughts, and actions. Your relationship with someone can say something about you. Once learning about their ancestry and the tragedy of the horse, Tess’s family decides to have her go visit part of their family in Trantridge. Upon her arrival she is greeted by Alec, the son of the mansion. Alec always got what he wanted and he wanted Tess. Since Tess refused his companionship Alec rapes her one night and Tess becomes pregnant. After the death of her infant, Sorrow, Tess finds new work at a dairy where she meets her new husband, Angel. On their wedding night Angel and Tess tell secrets that they have been holding in. Tess tells about Alec, and Angel decides to leave her. Tess’s past relationship changes her relationship now. This shows that who you are associated with can change how people think about you. Once Angel found out about Tess’s past he decides to go on with his apprenticeship without her.
